Plantations of native‐tree species are often recommended for ecological restoration, but the understanding of how these techniques catalyze natural ecological processes is limited. We investigated natural regeneration in five plantations of native trees in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve (PABR) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The plantations were 9–11 years old, and contained 8–14 native‐tree species with different compositions and relative density of species. We analyzed floristic composition, structure (density and basal area) of overstory and understory strata, as well as other ecological attributes (dispersal syndromes, fruit or seed size, and the availability of fruit for frugivores). Zoochorous species comprised 77% of the community, with a prevalence of the two smallest size classes of propagules (< 0.6 and 0.6–1.6 cm) in natural regeneration. The density of zoochorous plants in the understory was positively correlated with their density in the overstory, indicating their influence on natural regeneration (r2 = 0.36; p < 0.0002). Fruit availability for frugivores (density and richness of plants fruiting during the year) was also positively correlated with the density of stems in the understory. Therefore, attributes such as dispersal syndrome and fruiting season should be considered in selecting species to be planted. The differences in natural regeneration observed in each of the native‐tree plantations indicated that the performance of plantations as a restoration strategy may differ, depending on initial species composition, planting density, and site conditions.  相似文献

Background

Recent phylogenetic analyses have identified Amborella trichopoda, an understory tree species endemic to the forests of New Caledonia, as sister to a clade including all other known flowering plant species. The Amborella genome is a unique reference for understanding the evolution of angiosperm genomes because it can serve as an outgroup to root comparative analyses. A physical map, BAC end sequences and sample shotgun sequences provide a first view of the 870 Mbp Amborella genome.

Results

Analysis of Amborella BAC ends sequenced from each contig suggests that the density of long terminal repeat retrotransposons is negatively correlated with that of protein coding genes. Syntenic, presumably ancestral, gene blocks were identified in comparisons of the Amborella BAC contigs and the sequenced Arabidopsis thaliana, Populus trichocarpa, Vitis vinifera and Oryza sativa genomes. Parsimony mapping of the loss of synteny corroborates previous analyses suggesting that the rate of structural change has been more rapid on lineages leading to Arabidopsis and Oryza compared with lineages leading to Populus and Vitis. The gamma paleohexiploidy event identified in the Arabidopsis, Populus and Vitis genomes is shown to have occurred after the divergence of all other known angiosperms from the lineage leading to Amborella.

Conclusions

When placed in the context of a physical map, BAC end sequences representing just 5.4% of the Amborella genome have facilitated reconstruction of gene blocks that existed in the last common ancestor of all flowering plants. The Amborella genome is an invaluable reference for inferences concerning the ancestral angiosperm and subsequent genome evolution.  相似文献

Background

Euglenophytes are a group of photosynthetic flagellates possessing a plastid derived from a green algal endosymbiont, which was incorporated into an ancestral host cell via secondary endosymbiosis. However, the impact of endosymbiosis on the euglenophyte nuclear genome is not fully understood due to its complex nature as a 'hybrid' of a non-photosynthetic host cell and a secondary endosymbiont.  相似文献

Mutagenic and antimutagenic activities of the medicinal plant Duguetia furfuracea were assessed using SMART/wing and ring-X-loss tests. For the ring-X-loss test, 2- to 3-day-old Drosophila melanogaster ring-X-lineage males and virgin ywsn3 females received D. furfuracea infusion at doses of 0.085, 0.042, or 0.014 g/mL for 24 h. We found that D. furfuracea did not produce any mutagenic effects in D. melanogaster germinative cells. The somatic cells of D. melanogaster were analyzed using the SMART/wing test involving three lineages - mwh, flr3, and ORR - and the same doses of D. furfuracea infusion employed in the ring-X-loss test, as well as 20 mM urethane. The results of both standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses showed absence of mutagenic activity of D. furfuracea. In contrast, in both ST and HB crosses, we observed a modulatory effect of D. furfuracea against the genotoxic activity of urethane.  相似文献

Urban areas and many natural habitats are being dominated by a new selection pressure: anthropogenic noise. The ongoing expansion of urban areas, roads and airports throughout the world makes the noise almost omnipresent. Urbanization and the increase of noise levels form a major threat to living conditions in and around cities. Insight into the behavioural strategies of urban survivors may explain the sensitivity of other species to urban selection pressures. Here, we show that urban black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) living in noisy urban areas may select their home-range based primarily on ambient noise level. We have tested the hypothesis that the noise from vehicular traffic and visitors in an urban park in Brazil influences the use of home-range (space) by urban marmosets. Marmosets even avoided noisy areas with high food availability. In addition, they systematically preferred the quieter areas even with dynamic changes in the acoustic landscape of the park between weekdays and Sundays (no observations were made on Saturdays). These data provide evidence that the use of home-range by wild animals can be affected by a potential aversive stimulus such as noise pollution.  相似文献

Background

Termites are highly effective at degrading lignocelluloses, and thus can be used as a model for studying plant cell-wall degradation in biological systems. However, the process of lignin deconstruction and/or degradation in termites is still not well understood.

Methods

We investigated the associated structural modification caused by termites in the lignin biomolecular assembly in softwood tissues crucial for cell-wall degradation. We conducted comparative studies on the termite-digested (i.e. termite feces) and native (control) softwood tissues with the aid of advanced analytical techniques: 13C crosspolarization magic angle spinning and nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS-NMR) spectroscopy, flash pyrolysis with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and Py-GC-MS in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (Py-TMAH)-GC/MS.

Results

The 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopic analysis revealed an increased level of guaiacyl-derived (G unit) polymeric framework in the termite-digested softwood (feces), while providing specific evidence of cellulose degradation. The Py-GC/MS data were in agreement with the 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopic studies, thus indicating dehydroxylation and modification of selective intermonomer side-chain linkages in the lignin in the termite feces. Moreover, Py-TMAH-GC/MS analysis showed significant differences in the product distribution between control and termite feces. This strongly suggests that the structural modification in lignin could be associated with the formation of additional condensed interunit linkages.

Conclusion

Collectively, these data further establish: 1) that the major β-O-4' (β-aryl ether) was conserved, albeit with substructure degeneracy, and 2) that the nature of the resulting polymer in termite feces retained most of its original aromatic moieties (G unit-derived). Overall, these results provide insight into lignin-unlocking mechanisms for understanding plant cell-wall deconstruction, which could be useful in development of new enzymatic pretreatment processes mimicking the termite system for biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals.  相似文献

We investigated the adaptative response of S. cerevisiae in sod mutants (sod1Δ, sod2Δ and sod1Δsod2Δ) after H2O2 treatment in the stationary phase. sod2Δ and sod1Δsod2Δ demonstrated the highest levels of GSH in the control, suggesting that pathways which include GSH protect these double mutants against oxidative stress. In addition, sod1Δ and sod1Δsod2Δ had higher iron levels than the wild-type, independently of H2O2 stress. Fe levels were increased in sod2Δ following H2O2 In addition, the sod2Δ mutant was more sensitive to H2O2 treatment than the wild-type. These results suggest that sod2Δ sensibility may be associated with •OH production by the Fenton reaction. This increased iron demand in the sod2Δ mutant may be a reflection of the cells’ efforts to reconstitute proteins that are inactivated in conditions of excess superoxide. MDA levels were assayed by HPLC in these mutants. The highest MDA levels could be observed after 10mM H2O2 treatment in the sod1Δsod2Δ double mutant. After treatment with a GSH inhibitor, the MDA level was still higher in the same strain. Thus, both direct and indirect GSH pathways are involved in the protection of lipid membranes and proteins in these mutants and may constitute an adaptative response to enhanced basal oxidative damage produced by superoxide.  相似文献

Cytoplasmic microtubules are important in many cellular homeostatic processes in the cell. They regulate cell shape and movement as well as serving as a network by which vesicles and membrane-bound organelles can travel. Lately, there have been many studies demonstrating that microtubules are involved in regulation of intracellular signaling and, therefore, affect vascular reactivity. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that microtubule disruption attenuates agonist-induced endothelium-dependent vasodilation. Isolated mesenteric arterial bed from normotensive rats was preconstricted with phenylephrine, and dose-response curves for histamine, acetylcholine (ACh), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and pinacidil were performed before and after incubation with nocodazole or colchicine. Treatment of the vascular beds with nocodazole or colchicine significantly attenuated histamine relaxation but did not change the ACh-, SNP-, or pinacidil-induced vasorelaxation. Nocodazole did not cause an additional attenuation of the histamine-mediated dilation in mesenteric vessels in the presence of N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, high extracellular K+, or K+ channel blockers. These data suggest that disruption of microtubules affects an essential endothelial component of histamine-mediated vasodilation in the mesenteric arterial bed. The mechanism(s) involved in this effect might be related to an impairment of endothelial NO synthesis, which might not be as important for the ACh as for the histamine vasodilator response in rat mesenteric vessels. These results demonstrate the importance of the microtubular system for endothelium-dependent NO-mediated smooth muscle relaxation. nocodazole; nitric oxide; mesenteric arterial bed  相似文献
