The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between physical fitness and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in elderly Koreans. This was a cross-sectional study that involved 134 men and 299 women aged 65 to 88 years. Six senior fitness tests were used as independent variables: 30 s chair stand for lower body strength, arm curl for upper body strength, chair-sit-and-reach for lower body flexibility, back scratch for upper body flexibility, 8-ft up-and-go for agility/dynamic balance, and 2-min walk for aerobic endurance. Global cognitive function was assessed using the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Potential covariates such as age, education levels, blood lipids, and insulin resistance (IR) markers were also assessed. Compared to individuals without MMSE-based MCI, individuals with MMSE-based MCI had poor physical fitness based on the senior fitness test (SFT). There were significant positive trends observed for education level (p=0.001) and MMSE score (p<0.001) across incremental levels of physical fitness in this study population. Individuals with moderate (OR=0.341, p=0.006) and high (OR=0.271, p=0.007) physical fitness based on a composite score of the SFT measures were less likely to have MMSE-based MCI than individuals with low physical fitness (referent, OR=1). The strength of the association between moderate (OR=0.377, p=0.038) or high (OR=0.282, p=0.050) physical fitness and MMSE-based MCI was somewhat attenuated but remained statistically significant even after adjustment for the measured compounding factors. We found that poor physical fitness was independently associated with MMSE-based MCI in elderly Koreans.  相似文献

Summary This investigation includes a study of the effect of ammonium salt, nitrate and urea as nitrogen sources; vitamin B6 as cofactor in transamination, and of acetate, pyruvate and glucose as carbon sources on the dry weight, total nitrogen and amino acid synthesis in Ulva, Dictyota and Pterocladia. The results showed that urea and to a lesser extent ammonium salt were better nitrogen sources for either Ulva or Pterocladia, while ammonium salt was best for Dictyota. Vitamin B6 was effective in transaminations and resynthesis of amino acids in the three marine algae, especially Ulva. Pyruvate was a better carbon source than either acetate or glucose in increasing dry weights, total nitrogen and amino acid synthesis in Ulva and Dictyota, whereas acetate was best in Pterocladia.  相似文献

Isoenzyme analysis and activities of peroxidase (PER), polyphenol oxidase (POD) and glutamate oxaloacetate (GOT) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprints were used to analyze somaclonal variations in tissue culture-derived date palm plants. The frequency of somaclonal variations was found to be age dependent. Similar isoenzyme patterns for PER and GOT were detected in all analyzed plants. However, variations in activities of the three enzymes studied and in POD isoenzymes were detected. RAPD analysis showed genetic variations in approximately 4 % of the analyzed plants (70 regenerants). The genetic variations were only detected in 6- and 12-months-old cultures. It was observed also that all morphologically abnormal shoots showed genetic variations at the molecular level.  相似文献

Extracts prepared from 10 bacteria-free algal cultures and 4 naturally occurring seaweeds were examined for urease and ATP-urea amidolyase (UAL-ase) activities. UAL-ase activity is confined to members of the classes Volvocales, Chlorococcales and Chaetophorales in the Chlorophyceae. Members of the Ulotrichales may possess either urease or UAL-ase. Ulva contains urease. All other algae, so far examined, which can grow with urea as nitrogen source contain urease but not UAL-ase.  相似文献

Background  

2-Haloacids can be found in the natural environment as degradative products of natural and synthetic halogenated compounds. They can also be generated by disinfection of water and have been shown to be mutagenic and to inhibit glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. We have recently identified a novel haloacid permease Deh4p from a bromoacetate-degrading bacterium Burkholderia sp. MBA4. Comparative analyses suggested that Deh4p is a member of the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS), which includes thousands of membrane transporter proteins. Members of the MFS usually possess twelve putative transmembrane segments (TMS). Deh4p was predicted to have twelve TMS. In this study we characterized the topology of Deh4p with a PhoA-LacZ dual reporters system.  相似文献

Regioselective alkylation of 2-thiouracils 1a–c and 4-thiouracils 7a,b with 2,3-O-isopropylidene-2,3-dihydroxypropyl chloride (2) afforded 2-{[(2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl]thio}pyrimidin-4(1H)-ones 3a–c and 4-{[(2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl]thio} pyrimidin-2(1H)-ones 8a,b, respectively. Further alkylation with 2 and/or 2,3-O-isopropylidine-1-O-(4-toluenesulfonyl)-glycerol (4) gave the acyclo N-nucleosides 5a–c and 9a,b whose deprotection afforded 6a–c and 10a,b. 2-(Methylthio)pyrimidin-4(1H)-ones 11a–c and 4-(methylthio)pyrimidin-2(1H)-ones 14a,b were treated with 2 and/or 4 to give 12a–c and 15a,b which were deprotected to give 13a–c and 16a,b. Pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dithiones 17a–c were treated with two equivalents of 2 to give 2,4-bis{[(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl]thio}pyrimidines 18a–c. Deprotection of compounds 18a–c gave 2,4-bis[(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)thio]pyrimidines 19a-c. The activity of the deprotected nucleosides against Hepatitis B virus was evaluated and showed moderate inhibition activity against HBV with mild cytotoxicity.  相似文献
