The seeds of cycad plants are a toxic food used by many Aboriginal groups in northern Australia. Acute symptoms produced after consumption of untreated Cycas seeds are due to azoxyglycosides, especially cycasin, although the toxic dose depends on the animal species tested. There are three traditional methods used to treat these seeds: brief leaching in water; prolonged leaching in water; and aging. Aboriginal people living at Donydji outstation in northeast Arnhem Land, most regularly consume aged seeds ofCycas angulata R.Br. Analyses of fresh seeds and seeds prepared at Donydji and in the laboratory indicate that cycasin is effectively removed by all the traditional preparation techniques, although each technique has an end product with different storage and handling properties. The social implications of processing need further elaboration, but these techniques have a long history and archaeological remains of seeds in Australia may date back to the Pleistocene.  相似文献

Summary To examine the importance of covariance between stages in traits related to foraging, we quantified the relationships between reproductive success and sizerelated variability in weight gain in juvenile and adult instars of the crab spider Misumenoides formosipes (Araneae: Thomisidae). Prereproductive weight and fecundity are both highly correlated with carapace width, a linear measure of size which does not change within an instar. In field populations, adult females with larger carapaces gain more weight and are more likely to reproduce than females with smaller carapaces. The growth rate of spiders fed ad libitum in the laboratory is unrelated to size, suggesting that size-related differences in the field are due to variation in prey-capture success. Adult females with a carapace width less than 3.4 mm comprised 22% of the population, but were never found to reproduce. Of the individuals that did reproduce, a 17% increase in carapace width resulted in a 100% increase in fecundity. Juvenile stages must be examined to understand adult foraging and reproductive success, because the net weight gained by juvenile instars determines adult size. The final weight gained by spiders in the antepenultimate and penultimate instars explained nearly all the variation in carapace width in the penultimate and adult instars, respectively. We found that constraints on foraging in late juvenile stages are different from the adult stage. Penultimate foraging behavior differs from that of adults, because of constraints on foraging in the period preceding ecdysis. Additionally, in both late juvenile instars, carapace width had little or no effect on the final weight gained within the instar suggesting that factors that affect foraging are different between the juvenile and adult stages. These analyses stress the fact that to fully understand the effects of foraging on reproductive success, we must examine stage-specific constraints throughout an organism's life history.  相似文献

The effect of mutual shading on the root/shoot ratio and on the number of nodal roots of maize was studied. Plants of two varieties (Dea and LG2281) were grown in individual pots of 9 L, at three plant densities: 7.5, 11 and 15 plants m–2. A control experiment was carried out in order to study if root growth was affected by the small size of the pots. Maize plants (cv Dea) were grown at a low plant density (7.5 plants m–2) in pots of two different volumes (9 and 25 L respectively). In both experiments plants were watered every two hours with a nutrient solution. Some plants were sampled at five dates in the main experiment and the following data were recorded: foliar stage; root, stem and leaf dry weight; number of root primordia and number of emerged roots per phytomer. The final sampling date occurred at silking.Results of the control experiment showed that the root biomass was lower in small pots but the number of nodal roots per phytomer was not affected.Results of the main experiment showed that the total plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio were lower at high plant density. The number of emerged roots was strongly reduced on the upper phytomer (P8). This reduction was mainly due to a lower percentage of root primordia which elongated. A proposed interpretation is that the number of roots which emerge on upper phytomers is controlled by carbohydrate availability.  相似文献

Process conditions for the acid hydrolysis of pine hemicellulose and cellulose have been described which provide a biocompatible sugar solution. By using an improved strain of recombinant Escherichia coli, strain KO11, hydrolysates supplemented with yeast extract and tryptone nutrients were converted to ethanol with an efficiency of 85% to over 100% on the basis of monomer sugar content (approximately 72 g/liter) and with the production of 35 g of ethanol per liter in 48 h. In the process described, approximately 347 liters of ethanol could be produced per dry metric ton of lignocellulose.  相似文献

In-situ gelation of semidilute xanthan solutions with trivalent chromium, aluminum or iron ions was studied by rheology and UV-spectroscopy. Measurements of the elastic modulus of xanthan gel cylinders prepared by dialysis against the complexing ion at pH values from 2 to 6 indicate that monomeric species of the ion are ineffective, whereas dimeric or higher oligomeric species are effective in crosslinking the polysaccharide. When chromium was used as the crosslinking species, the dependence of the gelation rate on the ionic concentration followed a power law with a coefficient of 1·7. The gelation time and the gelation rate were found to extrapolate to zero at 1 m Cr for 2·5 mg/ml xanthan. The limiting concentration of xanthan needed for gelation with 5 m Cr(III) at 20°C was estimated as 0·35 mg/ml. This critical xanthan concentration is close to the overlap concentration c* estimated from the experimentally determined intrinsic viscosity [η] using c* = 1·4/[η]. An apparent activation energy for crosslinking of xanthan was calculated as Ea = 42 kJ/mol and Ea = 108 kJ/mol for Cr and Al ions, respectively. The fractal dimensionality of xanthan-Cr at the sol-gel transition was estimated as 1·3 applying the Chambon-Winter criterion for gelation, thus indicating that this gelation criterion is applicable also to stiff-chain polysaccharides such as xanthan.  相似文献

Exposure to petroleum constituents at contaminated sites may occur through a variety of pathways, including inhalation of vapors and particulates, ingestion of water and soils, and dermal contact with water and soils. Accurately assessing the human health risks from such exposures requires information on the medium‐ and route‐specific bioavailability of petroleum constituents (e.g., how well these chemicals enter the body via the gastrointestinal tract and skin). For example, when the medium or exposure route in an animal toxicity assay (e.g., ingestion of water) differs from the actual route of human exposure at the petroleum contaminated site (e.g., dermal contact with soil), adjustments should be made that reflect the relative bioavailability of the chemical in the different media. The focus of this article is on (1) the availability of oral and dermal absorption data for one PAH (benzo[a]pyrene, (B[a]P) and three VOCs in soil (benzene, toluene, and xylene); (2) factors affecting the uptake of these PAHs and VOCs from soil; and (3) ways to incorporate bioavailability data into human health risk assessments. Based on our review, we recommend the following default values for the oral and dermal absorption of B[a]P, benzene, toluene, and xylene from soil:

Site‐specific information such as chemical concentrations in soil, soil characteristics, soil loadings on the skin, contact site, and contact time could result in modifications of these numbers. As shown, our default absorption values are generally less than those recommended by the U.S. EPA (1991a,b,c). The implications of these estimates of bioavailability for risk assessment and for the selection of soil cleanup levels at petroleum‐contaminated sites are discussed.  相似文献

Microsomal preparations from adult male rat liver actively oxidized RU38486 into the 11 beta-monodemethylated, 11 beta-didemethylated and 17 alpha-hydroxylated derivatives, metabolites which are known to be formed in vivo. These oxidative reactions were inhibited at different degrees by P450 chemical inhibitors. Pretreatment of the animals by P450 mono-oxygenase prototype inducers led to drastic changes in RU38486 metabolization. Methylcholanthrene treatment carried out a significant decrease while phenobarbital markedly increased the metabolic activity of the liver microsomes. Moreover, antibodies to methylcholantrene-inducible P450 forms did not affect the metabolic activity while a complete blockade-of RU38486 oxidation was observed in the presence of antibodies to phenobarbital- inducible forms. The present results demonstrate that liver P450 mono-oxygenases are engaged in different oxidative steps of RU38486 metabolism and that phenobarbital-inducible but not methylcholanthrene-inducible P450 forms are active in RU38486 degradation.  相似文献
