The position of the body and use of the respiratory muscles in the act of rowing may limit ventilation and thereby reduce maximal aerobic power relative to that achieved in cycling or running, in spite of the greater muscle mass involved in rowing. This hypothesis was investigated for three groups of male subjects: nine elite senior oarsmen, eight former senior oarsmen and eight highly trained athletes unskilled in rowing. The subjects performed graded exercise to maximal effort on a rowing ergometer, cycle ergometer and treadmill while respiratory minute volume and oxygen consumption were monitored continuously. The VE at a given during intense submaximal exercise (greater than 75% of maximal ) was not significantly lower in rowing compared with that in cycling and treadmill running for any group, which would suggest that submaximal rowing does not restrict ventilation. At maximal effort, and for rowing were less than those for the other types of exercise in all the groups, although the differences were not statistically significant in the elite oarsmen. These data are consistent with a ventilatory limitation to maximal performance in rowing that may have been partly overcome by training in the elite oarsmen. Alternatively, a lower maximal VE in rowing might have been an effect rather than a cause of a lower maximal if maximal was limited by the lower rate of muscle activation in rowing.  相似文献

We report the isolation of xONR1, a novel member of the nuclear receptor superfamily from Xenopus laevis. xONR1 shares a high degree of amino acid sequence identity with the mammalian receptor for 1 alpha, 25-dihydroxy vitamin D3, particularly within the DNA-binding domain, although it does not bind this ligand. xONR1 DNA binding is stimulated by association with retinoid X receptor gamma (RXR gamma).  相似文献

The position of individual fruit on kiwifruit vines (Actinidiadeliciosa var. deliciosa) grown on a horizontal trellis (pergola)and on a T-bar trellis was determined using a theodolite. Thephysical, chemical, and postharvest attributes of the fruitwere related to their position on the vine during development. Fruit from the pergola vines were more numerous, of lesser weight,with lower concentrations of most mineral nutrients, but greaterconcentrations of soluble solids, and similar flesh firmnessafter 12 weeks of storage at 0 °C, than fruit from the T-barvines. The position on the vine accounted for most of the variationin the attributes of the fruit. Differences between fruit ona single lateral accounted for 43-56% of the variation. Variationbetween vines was relatively small (< 4% of the total variance). The heavier fruit were located at the apical ends of the laterals,while greater concentrations of soluble solids were associatedwith fruit located closer to the cordon. The larger fruit fromthe pergola vines developed from the early opening flowers.A similar relationship existed initially for the T-bar vines,but a reduction in growth of fruit from the early opening flowers8 weeks after anthesis resulted in a more even distributionof fruit size at harvest. The strongest relationship between mineral composition and postharvestattributes of the fruit was with soluble solids concentration(29-46% of the variance). The relationship with flesh firmnesswas weak (r = -0·14 to -0·32). Individual elementscould not be considered in isolation but rather in groups ofelements. Nitrogen was grouped strongly with phosphorus, sulphur,potassium, and copper, while calcium was linked with a secondgroup which included manganese and zinc. These two groups werenegatively related to one another. The greatest proportion of fruit with superior characteristicswas located in the denser parts of the canopy. In a study of nine families with “site-specific” ovarian cancer (criterion: three or more cases of epithelial ovarian cancer and no cases of breast cancer diagnosed at age <50 years) we have obtained evidence of linkage to the breast-ovarian cancer susceptibility gene, BRCA1 on 17q12-21. If the risk of cancer in these families is assumed to be restricted to the ovary, the best estimate of the proportion of families linked to BRCA1 is .78 (95% confidence interval .32–1.0). If predisposition to both breast and ovarian cancer is assumed, the proportion linked is 1.0 (95% confidence interval .46–1.0). The linkage of familial site-specific ovarian cancer to BRCA1 indicates the possibility of predictive testing in such families; however, this is only appropriate in families where the evidence for linkage to BRCA1 is conclusive.  相似文献

Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-1355 produces dextrans and alternan from sucrose. Alternan is an unusual dextran-like polymer containing alternating α(1→6)/α(1→3) glucosidic bonds. Cultures were mutagenized with UV and ethyl methanesulfonate, and colony morphology mutants were selected on 10% sucrose plates. Colony morphology variants exhibited changes from parent cultures in the production of one or more glucosyltransferases (GTFs) and glucans. Mutants were characterized by measuring resistance of glucan products to dextranase digestion, by electrophoresis, and by high-pressure liquid chromatography of maltose acceptor products generated from sucrose-maltose mixtures. Some mutants produced almost pure fraction L dextran, and cultures exhibited a single principal GTF band on sodium dodecyl sulfate-acrylamide gels. Other mutants produced glucans enriched for alternan. Colony morphology characteristics (size, smoothness, and opacity) and liquid culture properties (clumpiness, color, and viscosity in 10% sucrose medium) were explained on the basis of GTF production. Bloom Syndrome and Maternal Uniparental Disomy for Chromosome 15   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Bloom syndrome (BS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by increases in the frequency of sister-chromatid exchange and in the incidence of malignancy. Chromosome-transfer studies have shown the BS locus to map to chromosome 15q. This report describes a subject with features of both BS and Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Molecular analysis showed maternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 15. Meiotic recombination between the two disomic chromosomes 15 has resulted in heterodisomy for proximal 15q and isodisomy for distal 15q. In this individual BS is probably due to homozygosity for a gene that is telomeric to D15S95 (15q25), rather than to genetic imprinting, the mechanism responsible for the development of PWS. This report represents the first application of disomy analysis to the regional localization of a disease gene. This strategy promises to be useful in the genetic mapping of other uncommon autosomal recessive conditions.  相似文献

This study describes the genetic structure and provides estimates of mating system parameters in three natural populations of Prosopis velutina Woot. in southeastern Arizona. F statistics derived from isozyme data revealed the presence of both interpopulation and intrapopulation genetic differentiation. This population structure is discussed in relation to the ecological history of these populations that invaded the grasslands sites from adjacent riparian areas within the last 90 years, and possible modes of seed dispersal. The multilocus estimation program MLT of Ritland (Journal of Heredity 8: 235–237, 1990) was used to provide estimates of ts, tm, and the fixation index (F) of the maternal parents. Average estimates of ts ranged from 0.591 to 0.912. Estimates of tm ranged from 0.609 to 1.004, and averaged 0.758. The difference between tm and ts, which provides a measure of biparental inbreeding, averaged 0.058. This last result, together with significant heterogeneity found in pollen allele frequencies, suggests that a family structure has developed in the populations. A negative F value for one of the populations suggests selection against homozygotes between the seedling stage and maturity.  相似文献

X-ray interferometry/holography was applied to meridional x-ray diffraction data to determine uniquely the profile structures of a single monolayer of an integral membrane protein and a peripheral membrane protein, each tethered to the surface of a solid inorganic substrate. Bifunctional, organic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were utilized to tether the proteins to the surface of Ge/Si multilayer substrates, fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy, to facilitate the interferometric/holographic x-ray structure determination. The peripheral membrane protein yeast cytochrome c was covalently tethered to the surface of a sulfhydryl-terminated 11-siloxyundecanethiol SAM via a disulfide linkage with residue 102. The detergent-solubilized, photosynthetic reaction center integral membrane protein was electrostatically tethered to the surface of an analogous amine-terminated SAM. Optical absorption measurements performed on these two tethered protein monolayer systems were consistent with the x-ray diffraction results indicating the reversible formation of densely packed single monolayers of each fully functional membrane protein on the surface of the respective SAM. The importance of utilizing the organic self-assembled monolayers (as opposed to Langmuir-Blodgett) lies in their ability to tether specifically both soluble peripheral membrane proteins and detergent-solubilized integral membrane proteins. The vectorial orientations of the cytochrome c and the reaction center molecules were readily distinguishable in the profile structure of each monolayer at a spatial resolution of 7 A.  相似文献

Xanthopimpla stemmator (Thunberg)(Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a solitary endoparasite of pupae of Old World lepidopteran stalkborers, was recently imported into Texas as a candidate for biological control of New World stalkborers. Information on host acceptability, host suitability and cues responsible for host finding were necessary to gain an insight into parasite/host interactions, because of the absence of a coevolutionary history.Xanthopimpla stemmator females were exposed to laboratory-reared one-to six-day-oldDiatraea saccharalis (F.) pupae. An average of 62% of host pupae were accepted and all ages of pupae were equally acceptable. Host suitability decreased with host age. One- to five-day-old host pupae averaged 31–37% suitability, whereas only 19% of 6-day-old pupae were suitable. Successful parasitization, defined as the product of the proportion accepted and the proportion suitable, decreased from 22–23% for 1-, 2- and 3-day-old pupae to 13% for 6-day-old pupae. Sex ratio (female:male) of the parasite progeny increased with host age. Females comprised 47% of total parasite progeny of 1-day-old and 84% of 6-day-old pupae. The increase in percent females was a result of a similar number of females in all age classes, coupled with a decrease in the number of males from older hosts.Xanthopimpla stemmator superparasitized 61% of acceptedD. saccharalis pupae in the laboratory. On dissection, 73% of host pupae with multiple probe wounds were found to contain parasite eggs or larvae; these hosts contained up to 10 eggs or 7 first-instar larvae. Increased numbers of probes by the parasites were associated with an increase in successful parasitization. Host seeking activity inX. stemmator was stimulated by the presence of larval frass, host odor and movement of host pupae. Results suggest thatX. stemmator is a good candidate for biological control ofD. saccharalis and possibly other factitious stalkborer hosts.  相似文献

Summary Immunoreactive alpha-transforming growth factor (-TGF) was shown by immunocytochemistry to be present in the rat mammary gland at various stages of development, the staining being most intense in mature myoepithelial cells. -TGF was also detected in the secretions of the mammary glands of pregnant and lactating rats. -TGF in the extracts of rat mammary glands at each stage of development, and in several rat mammary cell lines and in culture medium in which they had been grown, was shown by Western blotting to consist primarily of a protein of molecular weight 50 kDa. The amount of this protein was greater in the mammary gland of the lactating rat than in resting or involuting glands. -TGF was also found in some, but not all, human breast carcinomas, and in benign hyperplastic breast diseases.  相似文献
