Climbing plant community composition and abundance was compared between the Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba Biological Reserve (ASPRB) and the Nascentes de Paranapiacaba Municipal Natural Park (NPMNP), two protected areas in the largest Atlantic Forest remnant, southeastern Brazil. Climbing plants ≥1 cm in diameter were sampled in 52 quadrats of 10 × 20 m (1.04 ha). From these data we calculated the Shannon–Wiener diversity index, calculated abundance and importance values for families, performed a principal coordinate analysis, and created a similarity dendrogram (TWINSPAN). The composition and abundance of species between ASPRB and NPMNP differed significantly due to the successional state of the ASPRB forest, which was affected by more recent disturbance. There we found 34 species, while in the NPMNP, species richness was 72, with only 24 species in common. The two areas formed two groups corresponding to two distinct floristic subsets. These montane forests were characterized by a predominance of species of the Asteraceae. The high species richness, floristic composition, and community composition reflect the greater degree of conservation in the area of NPMNP. The high density and community composition of climbers in the more conserved area of rainforest may be due to the low intensity of disturbance. 相似文献

The alarm pheromones often released by animals under stressful situations seem to elicit behavioral changes in conspecifics, which in the appropriate context can be viewed as anti-predatory responses. However, the releasing of alarm pheromones associated with predatory events has not been demonstrated in mammals. In the current study with wild-caught Cabrera voles, we carried out experiments in the laboratory and in the field to assess the release of alarm pheromones in scent-marks during simulated predatory events and disclose their effects on conspecifics. We first conducted an assay wherein voles where let to scent-mark a clean substrate in the absence of disturbance (control) and under the simulation of predatory events. Contrarily to the control, no fecal boli were released and the area marked with urine was significantly larger during the predatory simulation. In a subsequent assay, we assessed the voles’ preference between urine-marks released under predatory simulation and in control conditions. Voles showed a significant preference by control substrates. Finally, a third assay was carried out in the vole’s habitat wherein the individual activity was monitored by radio-tracking before and after placement of urine-marks obtained during the conditions described above. The vole’s activity was only reduced near the urine-marks released during the simulated predatory events. The results suggest that: (1) during predatory attempts, Cabrera voles release an alarm pheromone in their urine-marks; (2) the putative alarm pheromone reduces the voles’ activity in the surroundings of the marked area; (3) the putative alarm pheromone persists in the field affecting conspecifics’ activity for several days. 相似文献

Nucleus raphe pallidus (RPa) lies ventrally in the caudal brainstem, where it is coextensive rostrally with the nucleus raphe magnus (RMg) and caudally with the nucleus raphe obscurus (ROb). Retrograde neuronal tracing studies of our laboratory, carried out in rats and presented elsewhere, with fluorogold, true-blue or fast-blue, iontophoretically injected or by crystalline deposit, along the RPa extent, displayed many labeled pericaria at the preoptic area (POA), as well as lateral (LH) and dorsomedial (DMH) hypothalamus; paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and dorsal (DR) and median (MnR) raphe nuclei among others structures. In addition, RPa, which projects to the intermediolateral column, has been demonstrated to bear relation to many of the somatic-visceral functions also reported for POA. Iontophoretic injections of PHA-L, an anterograde tracer, in the POA subnuclei, presented terminal and varicose labeled fibers in RPa, as well as in the RMg, ROb, paraventricular thalamic (PVA), PVN and supraoptic nucleus (SO), LH, subparaventricular zone (sPVZ) and locus coeruleus (LC). Interestingly, POA, PVA, PVN, LH and SO have been described as retino- and suprachiasmatic-recipients. Taken together, these neuronal connections between brainstem raphe nuclei and POA, the similarity of functions to which they are related, as well as connections with other retino-suprachiasmatic-recipient structures, suggest that these caudal brainstem raphe nuclei could be part of the output system for the expression of some biological rhythms. 相似文献

Background
Nosocomial bloodstream infections (nBSIs) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality and are the most frequent type of nosocomial infection in pediatric patients.Methods
We identified the predominant pathogens and antimicrobial susceptibilities of nosocomial bloodstream isolates in pediatric patients (≤16 years of age) in the Brazilian Prospective Surveillance for nBSIs at 16 hospitals from 12 June 2007 to 31 March 2010 (Br SCOPE project).Results
In our study a total of 2,563 cases of nBSI were reported by hospitals participating in the Br SCOPE project. Among these, 342 clinically significant episodes of BSI were identified in pediatric patients (≤16 years of age). Ninety-six percent of BSIs were monomicrobial. Gram-negative organisms caused 49.0% of these BSIs, Gram-positive organisms caused 42.6%, and fungi caused 8.4%. The most common pathogens were Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) (21.3%), Klebsiella spp. (15.7%), Staphylococcus aureus (10.6%), and Acinetobacter spp. (9.2%). The crude mortality was 21.6% (74 of 342). Forty-five percent of nBSIs occurred in a pediatric or neonatal intensive-care unit (ICU). The most frequent underlying conditions were malignancy, in 95 patients (27.8%). Among the potential factors predisposing patients to BSI, central venous catheters were the most frequent (66.4%). Methicillin resistance was detected in 37 S. aureus isolates (27.1%). Of the Klebsiella spp. isolates, 43.2% were resistant to ceftriaxone. Of the Acinetobacter spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, 42.9% and 21.4%, respectively, were resistant to imipenem.Conclusions
In our multicenter study, we found a high mortality and a large proportion of gram-negative bacilli with elevated levels of resistance in pediatric patients. 相似文献175.
This paper describes a human-computer interface based on electro-oculography (EOG) that allows interaction with a computer using eye movement. The EOG registers the movement of the eye by measuring, through electrodes, the difference of potential between the cornea and the retina. A new pair of EOG glasses have been designed to improve the user''s comfort and to remove the manual procedure of placing the EOG electrodes around the user''s eye. The interface, which includes the EOG electrodes, uses a new processing algorithm that is able to detect the gaze direction and the blink of the eyes from the EOG signals. Truffles have evolved from epigeous (aboveground) ancestors in nearly every major lineage of fleshy fungi. Because accelerated rates of morphological evolution accompany the transition to the truffle form, closely related epigeous ancestors remain unknown for most truffle lineages. This is the case for the quintessential truffle genus Tuber, which includes species with socio-economic importance and esteemed culinary attributes. Ecologically, Tuber spp. form obligate mycorrhizal symbioses with diverse species of plant hosts including pines, oaks, poplars, orchids, and commercially important trees such as hazelnut and pecan. Unfortunately, limited geographic sampling and inconclusive phylogenetic relationships have obscured our understanding of their origin, biogeography, and diversification. To address this problem, we present a global sampling of Tuberaceae based on DNA sequence data from four loci for phylogenetic inference and molecular dating. Our well-resolved Tuberaceae phylogeny shows high levels of regional and continental endemism. We also identify a previously unknown epigeous member of the Tuberaceae – the South American cup-fungus Nothojafnea thaxteri (E.K. Cash) Gamundí. Phylogenetic resolution was further improved through the inclusion of a previously unrecognized Southern hemisphere sister group of the Tuberaceae. This morphologically diverse assemblage of species includes truffle (e.g. Gymnohydnotrya spp.) and non-truffle forms that are endemic to Australia and South America. Southern hemisphere taxa appear to have diverged more recently than the Northern hemisphere lineages. Our analysis of the Tuberaceae suggests that Tuber evolved from an epigeous ancestor. Molecular dating estimates Tuberaceae divergence in the late Jurassic (∼156 million years ago), with subsequent radiations in the Cretaceous and Paleogene. Intra-continental diversification, limited long-distance dispersal, and ecological adaptations help to explain patterns of truffle evolution and biodiversity. 相似文献

Objective:
To examine the effects of naltrexone/bupropion (NB) combination therapy on weight and weight‐related risk factors in overweight and obese participants.Design and Methods:
CONTRAVE Obesity Research‐II (COR‐II) was a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study of 1,496 obese (BMI 30‐45 kg/m2) or overweight (27‐45 kg/m2 with dyslipidemia and/or hypertension) participants randomized 2:1 to combined naltrexone sustained‐release (SR) (32 mg/day) plus bupropion SR (360 mg/day) (NB32) or placebo for up to 56 weeks. The co‐primary endpoints were percent weight change and proportion achieving ≥5% weight loss at week 28.Results:
Significantly (P < 0.001) greater weight loss was observed with NB32 versus placebo at week 28 (?6.5% vs. ?1.9%) and week 56 (?6.4% vs. ?1.2%). More NB32‐treated participants (P < 0.001) experienced ≥5% weight loss versus placebo at week 28 (55.6% vs. 17.5%) and week 56 (50.5% vs. 17.1%). NB32 produced greater improvements in various cardiometabolic risk markers, participant‐reported weight‐related quality of life, and control of eating. The most common adverse event with NB was nausea, which was generally mild to moderate and transient. NB was not associated with increased events of depression or suicidality versus placebo.Conclusion:
NB represents a novel pharmacological approach to the treatment of obesity, and may become a valuable new therapeutic option.179.

The demand for biomaterials with properties that provide sustained release of substances with pharmacological interest is constant. One candidate for applications in this area is the Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) extracted from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. Recent studies indicate the NRL as a matrix for sustained release, showing promising results for biomedical applications such as: can stimulate natural angiogenesis and is capable of adhering cells on its surface, promoting the replacement and regeneration of tissue. So, the NRL is an excellent candidate to propitiate the sustained release of peptides of pharmacological interest such as oxytocin, a hormonal peptide which has the function to promote uterine muscle contractions and reduce bleeding during childbirth, and stimulate the release of breast milk. Results demonstrated that 90 μg mL?1 (45 %) of the incorporated peptide in Natural Rubber Latex Biomedical (NRLb) functionalized membranes was released at 10 h in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. Swelling kinetics assay showed that the NRLb membranes are able to absorb over a period of 16 h up to 1.08 grams of water per grams of membrane. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the peptide was adsorbed on the surface and within NRLb membrane. Fourier transform infrared and Derivative Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that oxytocin did not interacted chemically with the membrane. Furthermore, hemolysis of erythrocytes, quantified spectrophotometrically using materials (Oxytocin, NRLb, and NRLb + Oxytocin) showed no hemolytic effects up to 100 μg mL?1 (compounds and mixtures), indicating no detectable disturbance of the red blood cell membranes. Based on these results it was possible to conclude that the NRLb has shown effectiveness as a model in the release of peptides with pharmacological interest. 相似文献
