Based on microfacies analyses and sedimentological data, 17 facies are identified within the Middle Miocene carbonates at Siwa Oasis in the northern Western Desert of Egypt. These facies are attributed to five main facies belts. Within these facies and facies belts, five foraminiferal assemblages are recognized. A depositional model relates the reported facies and biofacies to a down-dip depositional profile of an inner to middle carbonate ramp. The facies of the peritidal to restricted lagoon (facies belt 1) and the less-restricted lagoon (facies belt 2) were deposited in the inner ramp behind the barrier/beach shoal facies belt 3. Basinward, lime mudstone of facies belts 4 and 5 accumulated in a proximal to distal middle ramp, respectively. The depositional evolution involved three stages, which are strongly controlled by tectonics and eustatic sea-level changes. The first stage comprises the transgressive Lower Miocene clastic-dominated fluvial facies of the Moghra Formation. The second stage heralds the deposition of the Langhian inner-ramp carbonate and shale facies of the basal Oasis Member of the Marmarica Formation under a relatively high stand of sea level, constrained clastic influx and climate warming. The final stage is represented by Langhian to Serravallian mid-ramp carbonate-dominated facies of the Siwa Escarpment and El Diffa Plateau members under fluctuating sea level, and a westward restriction in clastic supply and water turbidity. 相似文献

Seminal fluid is an important part of the ejaculate of internally fertilizing animals. This fluid contains substances that nourish and activate sperm for successful fertilization. Additionally, it contains components that influence female physiology to further enhance fertilization success of the sperm donor, possibly beyond the recipient''s optimum. Although evidence for such substances abounds, few studies have unraveled their identities, and focus has been exclusively on separate-sex species. We present the first detailed study into the seminal fluid composition of a hermaphrodite (Lymnaea stagnalis). Eight novel peptides and proteins were identified from the seminal-fluid-producing prostate gland and tested for effects on oviposition, hatching and consumption. The gene for the protein found to suppress egg mass production, Ovipostatin, was sequenced, thereby providing the first fully-characterized seminal fluid substance in a simultaneous hermaphrodite. Thus, seminal fluid peptides and proteins have evolved and can play a crucial role in sexual selection even when the sexes are combined. 相似文献

A simple and ecofriendly biosynthetic process has been developed for silver nanoparticles using the aqueous extract of gum olibanum (Boswellia serrata), a renewable natural plant biopolymer. The water soluble compounds in the gum serve as dual functional reducing and stabilizing agents. The effect of concentration of gum and silver nitrate; and reaction time on nanoparticle synthesis was studied. The UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. By tuning the reaction conditions, size controlled spherical nanoparticles of around 7.5 ± 3.8 nm was achieved. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, a probable mechanism involved in reduction and stabilization of nanoparticles has been explained. The produced silver nanoparticles exhibited substantial antibacterial activity on both the Gram classes of bacteria. By virtue of being biogenic and encapsulated with proteins, these surface functionalized nanoparticles can be easily integrated for various biological applications. 相似文献

Intracellular localization of constitutive and inducible heat shock protein 70 in rat liver after in vivo heat stress 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The level and intracellular redistribution of the two nucleo-cytoplasmic members of 70 kDa heat shock protein family (constitutive, Hsc70 or Hsp73, and inducible, Hsp72) were studied in rat liver during a 24-h period after exposure of the animals to 41 degrees C whole body hyperthermic stress. The examined proteins were detected in the liver cytosol and nuclei by Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining of paraffin sections, as well as by immnocytochemical staining of isolated nuclear smears. All three techniques applied were based on the use of monoclonal antibodies recognizing both constitutive and inducible Hsp70 isoforms or only the inducible isoform, and gave consistent results. The exposure of the animals to in vivo heat stress was shown to induce the synthesis of otherwise non-existing Hsp72, rendering Hsc70 level unchanged in comparison to unstressed controls. However, immediately after the stress the intracellular redistribution of Hsc70, i.e. its nuclear accumulation, was observed. The maximal level of Hsp70 both in the cytoplasm and in the nuclei was registered 5 h after the stress, which coincided with the maximal level of Hsp72 induction. The alterations in the level and intracellular distribution of examined proteins were still noticeable 24 h after the stress. The results of this study could shed some more light on, as yet uncertain, differences between cellular functions of these two proteins, as well as on the role of the constitutive form under normal and stress conditions. 相似文献

Bacteria of the genus Shewanella can thrive in different environments and demonstrate significant variability in their metabolic and ecophysiological capabilities including cold and salt tolerance. Genomic characteristics underlying this variability across species are largely unknown. In this study, we address the problem by a comparison of the physiological, metabolic, and genomic characteristics of 19 sequenced Shewanella species. We have employed two novel approaches based on association of a phenotypic trait with the number of the trait-specific protein families (Pfam domains) and on the conservation of synteny (order in the genome) of the trait-related genes. Our first approach is top-down and involves experimental evaluation and quantification of the species?? cold tolerance followed by identification of the correlated Pfam domains and genes with a conserved synteny. The second, a bottom-up approach, predicts novel phenotypes of the species by calculating profiles of each Pfam domain among their genomes and following pair-wise correlation of the profiles and their network clustering. Using the first approach, we find a link between cold and salt tolerance of the species and the presence in the genome of a Na+/H+ antiporter gene cluster. Other cold-tolerance-related genes include peptidases, chemotaxis sensory transducer proteins, a cysteine exporter, and helicases. Using the bottom-up approach, we found several novel phenotypes in the newly sequenced Shewanella species, including degradation of aromatic compounds by an aerobic hybrid pathway in Shewanella woodyi, degradation of ethanolamine by Shewanella benthica, and propanediol degradation by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 and Shewanella sp. Competition for fertilisation in hermaphroditic animals seems to have led to many odd behaviours and complex morphologies involved in the transfer of accessory-gland products to the partner. Terrestrial slugs of the genus Deroceras show remarkably elaborate and interspecifically diverse penis morphologies and mating behaviours. Most species have an appending penial gland, which in Deroceras panormitanum consists of a few long fingers that are everted after sperm exchange and laid onto the partner’s back. To investigate whether this gland transfers a secretion onto the partner’s skin, we killed slugs at different mating stages and studied their penial glands and skin histologically. Two types of secretion granules appeared at a very early stage of courtship, and the penial gland was already filled 15 min into the courtship. At copulation, the gland everted this secretion onto the partner’s body, where it remained for at least 50 min. No lysis of skin tissue or other effects on the skin were observed. The slugs tried to lick the received secretion off their own body, and some droplets were observed to be shed with the body mucus. Our results indicate the external application of a glandular substance that could function as either a pheromone or allohormone. The behaviours of the recipients suggest sexual conflict, although mutual interest cannot be ruled out. 相似文献
