Fossil mandibles of the Bornean shrew Crocidura foetida recovered from excavations at the west mouth of Niah cave, Sarawak, Malaysia, show that the late Pleistocene population at this lowland location was comparable in size with the large subspecies Crocidura foetida doriae , presently occurring at inland, upland locations. Two Holocene specimens fall in the size range of the smaller lowland subspecies C. f. foetida . Comparable post-Pleistocene size-reduction is known among other mammals of Borneo, but this is the first instance of dated examples. The evolutionary trend conforms with Bergmann's 'rule' but, other than climate change, no selective agent is apparent.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 413–419.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of cytoskeletal actin bundles play an essential role in numerous physiological processes, including hearing, fertilization, cell migration, and growth. Cells employ a multitude of actin-binding proteins to actively regulate bundle dimensions and cross-linking properties to suit biological function. The mechanical properties of actin bundles vary by orders of magnitude depending on diameter and length, cross-linking protein type and concentration, and constituent filament properties. Despite their importance to cell function, the molecular design principles responsible for this mechanical behavior remain unknown. Here, we examine the mechanics of cytoskeletal bundles using a molecular-based model that accounts for the discrete nature of constituent actin filaments and their distinct cross-linking proteins. A generic competition between filament stretching and cross-link shearing determines three markedly different regimes of mechanical response that are delineated by the relative values of two simple design parameters, revealing the universal nature of bundle-bending mechanics. In each regime, bundle-bending stiffness displays distinct scaling behavior with respect to bundle dimensions and molecular composition, as observed in reconstituted actin bundles in vitro. This mechanical behavior has direct implications on the physiological bending, buckling, and entropic stretching behavior of cytoskeletal processes, as well as reconstituted actin systems. Results are used to predict the bending regimes of various in vivo cytoskeletal bundles that are not easily accessible to experiment and to generate hypotheses regarding implications of the isolated behavior on in vivo bundle function.  相似文献

A new model is used to analyze the fully coupled problem of pulsatile blood flow through a compliant, axisymmetric stenotic artery using the finite element method. The model uses large displacement and large strain theory for the solid, and the full Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid. The effect of increasing area reduction on fluid dynamic and structural stresses is presented. Results show that pressure drop, peak wall shear stress, and maximum principal stress in the lesion all increase dramatically as the area reduction in the stenosis is increased from 51 to 89 percent. Further reductions in stenosis cross-sectional area, however, produce relatively little additional change in these parameters due to a concomitant reduction in flow rate caused by the losses in the constriction. Inner wall hoop stretch amplitude just distal to the stenosis also increases with increasing stenosis severity, as downstream pressures are reduced to a physiological minimum. The contraction of the artery distal to the stenosis generates a significant compressive stress on the downstream shoulder of the lesion. Dynamic narrowing of the stenosis is also seen, further augmenting area constriction at times of peak flow. Pressure drop results are found to compare well to an experimentally based theoretical curve, despite the assumption of laminar flow.  相似文献

Given that neither absolute measures nor direct model validations of global terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) are feasible, intercomparison of global NPP models provides an effective tool to check model consistency. For this study, we tested the assumption that water availability is the primary limiting factor of NPP in global terrestrial biospheric models. We compared a water balance coefficient (WBC), calculated as the difference of mean annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration to NPP for each grid cell (0.5° × 0.5° longitude/latitude) in each of 14 models. We also evaluated different approaches used for introducing water budget limitations on NPP: (1) direct physiological control on evapotranspiration through canopy conductance; (2) climatological computation of constraints from supply/demand for ecosystem productivity; and (3) water limitation inferred from satellite data alone. Plots of NPP vs. WBC showed comparable patterns for the models using the same method for water balance limitation on NPP. While correlation plots revealed similar patterns for most global models, other environmental controls on NPP introduced substantial variability.  相似文献

1970年初,我们发现从蜜蜂幼虫中分离的芽孢杆菌“010”在生产性能和对昆虫的致病方面,均显示了良好的特性。该年我组曾与南苑公社化工厂共同对此菌的生产及毒效进行了初步摸索。继之,考察了它的营养要求及某些生产工艺条件,并对不同害虫进行了室内及大田的毒力测定。1971—1972年,通过培养基试验和上罐考察,选出两组综合利用较为理想的培养基。其中一组配比是:豆饼粉2.4%、玉米浆2%、麦芽粉4%、碳酸钙0.1%。菌数曾达48亿/毫升。“010”杀虫范  相似文献
