The dwarf scorpionfish Scorpaena papillosa detected the hydrodynamic signals produced by prey with the mechanosensory lateral line. This species displayed a pause and move search pattern that is consistent with a saltatory search. The pause phase of the search cycle was probably used to detect prey because pauses often ended early in order to initiate an approach at prey and prey were detected throughout the search space. The move phase of the search cycle repositioned the fish so that it moved approximately a third of the reactive distance. Move distance was found to be the most important factor in gaining novel search space. Turning was shown to be relatively unimportant in gaining novel search space with a high frequency of low turn angles made by the fish. The dwarf scorpionfish, however, exhibited a spiralling or looping pattern over a search path exhibiting a turn bias towards either the left or right. The dwarf scorpionfish adopted a search behaviour that is consistent with a saltatory search and efficient for lateral line predation. 相似文献

1. Rates of insulin release, glucose utilization (measured as [(3)H]water formation from [5-(3)H]glucose) and glucose oxidation (measured as (14)CO(2) formation from [1-(14)C]- or [6-(14)C]-glucose) were determined in mouse pancreatic islets incubated in vitro, and were used to estimate the rate of oxidation of glucose by the pentose cycle pathway under various conditions. Rates of oxidation of [U-(14)C]ribose and [U-(14)C]xylitol were also measured. 2. Insulin secretion was stimulated fivefold when the medium glucose concentration was raised from 3.3 to 16.7mm in the absence of caffeine; in the presence of caffeine (5mm) a similar increase in glucose concentration evoked a much larger (30-fold) increase in insulin release. Glucose utilization was also increased severalfold as the intracellular glucose concentration was raised over this range, particularly between 5 and 11mm, but the rate of oxidation of glucose via the pentose cycle was not increased. 3. Glucosamine (20mm) inhibited glucose-stimulated insulin release and glucose utilization but not glucose metabolism via the pentose cycle. No evidence was obtained for any selective effect on the metabolism of glucose via the pentose cycle of tolbutamide, glibenclamide, dibutyryl 3':5'-cyclic AMP, glucagon, caffeine, theophylline, ouabain, adrenaline, colchicine, mannoheptulose or iodoacetamide. Phenazine methosulphate (5mum) increased pentose-cycle flux but inhibited glucose-stimulated insulin release. 4. No formation of (14)CO(2) from [U-(14)C]ribose could be detected: [U-(14)C]xylitol gave rise to small amounts of (14)CO(2). Ribose and xylitol had no effect on the rate of oxidation of glucose; ribitol and xylitol had no effect on the rate of glucose utilization. Ribose, ribitol and xylitol did not stimulate insulin release under conditions in which glucose produced a large stimulation. 5. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs, 21 to 22 nucleotides long, with important regulatory roles. They are processed from longer RNA molecules with imperfectly matched foldback regions and they function in modulating the stability and translation of mRNA. Recently, we and others have demonstrated that the unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , like diverse multicellular organisms, contains miRNAs. These RNAs resemble the miRNAs of land plants in that they direct site-specific cleavage of target mRNA with miRNA-complementary motifs and, presumably, act as regulatory molecules in growth and development. Utilizing these findings we have developed a novel artificial miRNA system based on ligation of DNA oligonucleotides that can be used for specific high-throughput gene silencing in green algae. 相似文献

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (f MRI) is a noninvasive technique which is commonly used to quantify changes in blood oxygenation and flow coupled to neuronal activation. One of the primary goals of f MRI studies is to identify localized brain regions where neuronal activation levels vary between groups. Single voxel t-tests have been commonly used to determine whether activation related to the protocol differs across groups. Due to the generally limited number of subjects within each study, accurate estimation of variance at each voxel is difficult. Thus, combining information across voxels is desirable in order to improve efficiency. Here, we construct a hierarchical model and apply an empirical Bayesian framework for the analysis of group f MRI data, employing techniques used in high-throughput genomic studies. The key idea is to shrink residual variances by combining information across voxels and subsequently to construct an improved test statistic. This hierarchical model results in a shrinkage of voxel-wise residual sample variances toward a common value. The shrunken estimator for voxel-specific variance components on the group analyses outperforms the classical residual error estimator in terms of mean-squared error. Moreover, the shrunken test statistic decreases false-positive rates when testing differences in brain contrast maps across a wide range of simulation studies. This methodology was also applied to experimental data regarding a cognitive activation task. 相似文献
