In both single- and mixed-species social groups, certain participants are known to play important roles in providing benefits. Identifying these participants is critical for understanding group dynamics, but is often difficult with large roving social groups in the wild. Here, we develop a new approach to characterize roles in social groups and apply it to mixed-species bird flocks (flocks hereafter) in an Indian tropical evergreen forest. Two types of species, namely intraspecifically gregarious and sallying species, are thought to play important roles in flocks because studies have shown they attract other flock participants. However, it is unclear why these types are attractive and whether they are essential for flock formation. We address these questions by focusing on the composition of the subset of flocks containing only two species each. In two-species flocks, it is reasonable to assume that at least one species obtains some kind of benefit. Therefore, only those species combinations that result in benefit to at least one species should occur as two-species flocks. Using data from 540 flocks overall, of which 158 were two-species flocks, we find that intraspecifically gregarious species are disproportionately represented in two-species flocks and always lead flocks when present, and that flocks containing them are joined significantly more by other species. Our results suggest that intraspecifically gregarious species are likely to be the primary benefit providers in flocks and are important for tropical flock formation. Our study also provides a new approach to understanding importance in other mixed-species and single-species social groups. 相似文献

Epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) is one of the most important diseases affecting more than 100 species of wild and cultured finfish. EUS was first reported in farmed ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) from Japan in 1971 and has since then spread across different countries of four continents including Asia, Australia, North America and Africa. The spread of the disease, especially in Asia–Pacific region and Africa has led to substantial damage to the fish resources and livelihood of the fish farmers. No reports are available confirming the outbreak of the disease from Europe and South America. The latest outbreak of EUS has been reported from Canada in a new susceptible species brown bullhead, Ameiurus nebulosus. It seems that the disease has potential to spread further, owing to the epizootic nature of the disease and broad susceptible host range. Considering the global importance of this disease, this review provides the current status of understanding about the etiology, process of diseases development, species affected, diagnostic methods as well as control and preventive measures, in light of the historical developments in those areas. 相似文献

There is increasing evidence showing that ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are major contributors to N2O emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Although the fundamental metabolic pathways for N2O production by AOB are now coming to light, the mechanisms responsible for N2O production by AOB in WWTP are not fully understood. Mathematical modeling provides a means for testing hypotheses related to mechanisms and triggers for N2O emissions in WWTP, and can then also become a tool to support the development of mitigation strategies. This study examined the ability of four mathematical model structures to describe two distinct mechanisms of N2O production by AOB. The production mechanisms evaluated are (1) N2O as the final product of nitrifier denitrification with NO as the terminal electron acceptor and (2) N2O as a byproduct of incomplete oxidation of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) to NO. The four models were compared based on their ability to predict N2O dynamics observed in three mixed culture studies. Short‐term batch experimental data were employed to examine model assumptions related to the effects of (1) NH concentration variations, (2) dissolved oxygen (DO) variations, (3) NO accumulations and (4) NH2OH as an externally provided substrate. The modeling results demonstrate that all these models can generally describe the NH, NO, and NO data. However, none of these models were able to reproduce all measured N2O data. The results suggest that both the denitrification and NH2OH pathways may be involved in N2O production and could be kinetically linked by a competition for intracellular reducing equivalents. A unified model capturing both mechanisms and their potential interactions needs to be developed with consideration of physiological complexity. Biotechnol. Immunologic adjuvants are critical components of vaccines, but it remains unclear how prototypical adjuvants enhance the adaptive immune response. Recent studies have shown that necrotic cells could trigger an immune response. Although most adjuvants have been shown to be cytotoxic, this activity has traditionally been considered a side effect. We set out to test the role of adjuvant-mediated cell death in immunity and found that alum, the most commonly used adjuvant worldwide, triggers a novel form of cell death in myeloid leukocytes characterized by cathepsin-dependent lysosome-disruption. We demonstrated that direct lysosome-permeabilization with a soluble peptide, Leu-Leu-OMe, mimics the alum-like form of necrotic cell death in terms of cathepsin dependence and cell-type specificity. Using a combination of a haploid genetic screen and cathepsin-deficient cells, we identified specific cathepsins that control lysosome-mediated necrosis. We identified cathepsin C as critical for Leu-Leu-OMe-induced cell death, whereas cathepsins B and S were required for alum-mediated necrosis. Consistent with a role of necrotic cell death in adjuvant effects, Leu-Leu-OMe replicated an alum-like immune response in vivo, characterized by dendritic cell activation, granulocyte recruitment, and production of Th2-associated antibodies. Strikingly, cathepsin C deficiency not only blocked Leu-Leu-OMe-mediated necrosis but also impaired Leu-Leu-OMe-enhanced immunity. In this study, we report for the first time a detailed evaluation of the phylogenetic history and molecular evolution of the major coleoid toxins: CAP, carboxypeptidase, chitinase, metalloprotease GON-domain, hyaluronidase, pacifastin, PLA2, SE-cephalotoxin and serine proteases, with the carboxypeptidase and GON-domain documented for the first time in the coleoid venom arsenal. We show that although a majority of sites in these coleoid venom-encoding genes have evolved under the regime of negative selection, a very small proportion of sites are influenced by the transient selection pressures. Moreover, nearly 70 % of these episodically adapted sites are confined to the molecular surface, highlighting the importance of variation of the toxin surface chemistry. Coleoid venoms were revealed to be as complex as other venoms that have traditionally been the recipient of the bulk of research efforts. The presence of multiple peptide/protein types in coleoids similar to those present in other animal venoms identifies a convergent strategy, revealing new information as to what characteristics make a peptide/protein type amenable for recruitment into chemical arsenals. Coleoid venoms have significant potential not only for understanding fundamental aspects of venom evolution but also as an untapped source of novel toxins for use in drug design and discovery. 相似文献

AimsWeight gain is a common outcome of antipsychotics therapy in schizophrenic patients. However, the underlying neuronal mechanisms are unclear. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of GABAA receptors within the framework of nucleus accumbens shell (AcbSh) in haloperidol-induced hyperphagia and body weight gain in sated rats.Main methodsIn acute studies, GABAA receptor agonists muscimol, diazepam or antagonist bicuculline were administered by AcbSh route, alone or in combination with haloperidol (intraperitoneal/ip). Immediately after these treatments, preweighed food was offered to the animals at commencement of dark phase. Cumulative food intake was measured at 2 and 6 h post-injection time-points. Furthermore, effects of subacute haloperidol treatment, alone or in combination with muscimol, diazepam or bicuculline, on food intake and body weight were investigated.Key findingsWhile acute treatment with haloperidol, muscimol or diazepam dose dependently stimulated the food intake, bicuculline suppressed the same. Prior administration of muscimol (20 ng/rat, intra-AcbSh) and diazepam (5 µg/rat, intra-AcbSh) significantly potentiated, whereas bicuculline (40 ng/rat, intra-AcbSh) negated the hyperphagic effect of acute haloperidol (0.005 or 0.01 mg/kg/rat, ip). Subacute administration of haloperidol (0.01 mg/kg/rat/day, ip) for 15 days produced increase in food intake and body weight. Although, concomitant administration of muscimol (20 ng/rat/day, intra-AcbSh) or diazepam (5 μg/rat/day, intra-AcbSh) markedly enhanced, bicuculline (40 ng/rat/day, intra-AcbSh) prevented the subacute haloperidol-induced hyperphagia and weight gain.SignificanceThe results of present study suggest that increased food intake and body weight following haloperidol treatment in rats, may be mediated via AcbSh GABAA receptors. 相似文献
