Synopsis To determine whether burbot occupy defined home range in rivers, we radio-tracked individuals in the Ohře River, Czech Republic. We also tested the hypothesis that the size of burbot home range would correlate with the fish mass. Burbot's strong attraction to suitable refuges was the basis for our second hypotheses, that its diurnal behavior would reflect refuge availability in the riverine environment. To test these hypotheses, we analyzed data on fish movements in relation to depth, velocity, substratum size and river slope. During the night, burbot preferred deeper areas with lower slope and finer substrates than during daylight hours. The home range was smaller in areas with low or zero slopes, and significantly increased with increasing river slope. There was no relationship between home range size and fish mass. River slope appeared to be the main predictor of the burbot's home range size.  相似文献

Summary. The article is reviewing some significant features and issues in the process of haploid formation in two important monocotyledonous crop plants – maize and barley – and in two dicotyledonous plants – flax and potato. Exotic maize lines with higher androgenic response turned up as a good source for this heritable trait and this valuable trait can be incorporated into elite maize lines via crossing. Lots of attempts were devoted to identifying some cytological and/or morphological markers for androgenic response in maize microspore cultures. The “starlike” organization of the cytoplasm inside the induced maize microspores together with the enlarged size of induced microspores can be considered as morphological markers for androgenic response. In barley, microspores with rich cytoplasm that was of granular appearance with the nucleus located near the cell wall and with no visible vacuole had the largest survival rate and many of these cells continued in development and produced embryos. In flax, a dramatic increase of induction rate in anther cultures (up to 25%) was achieved when flax anthers were pretreated for 3 days at 4 °C and afterwards kept for 1 day at 35 °C. Also gynogenesis in flax has been reported already and complete plants were obtained. In potato microspore cultures, formation of two dissimilar cells indicated a strong polarization in the system and as a result of this polarization a prominent suspensor developed that persisted until the torpedo stage of the androgenic embryo. This was the first time the formation of a well developed suspensor was described in connection with androgenesis. Isolation of mitotic chromosomes using flow cytometry is an attractive way to dissect nuclear genomes into their individual chromosomal components or portions of them. This approach is especially useful in plants with complex genomes, where it offers a targeted and hence economical approach to genome analysis and gene cloning. In several plant species, DNA of flow-sorted chromosomes has been used for isolation of molecular markers from specific genome regions, for physical mapping using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), for integration of genetic and physical maps and for construction of chromosome-specific DNA libraries, including those cloned in bacterial artificial chromosome vectors. Until now, chromosome analysis and sorting using flow cytometry (flow cytogenetics) has found little application in barley (2n = 14, 1C ∼ 5,100 Mbp) because of the impossibility of discriminating and sorting individual chromosomes, except for the smallest chromosome 1H and some translocation chromosomes with DNA content significantly different from the remaining chromosomes. In this work, we demonstrate that wheat–barley ditelosomic addition lines can be used to sort any arm of barley chromosomes 2H–7H. Thus, the barley genome can be dissected into fractions representing only about 6–12% of the total genome. This advance makes the flow cytogenetics an attractive tool, which may greatly facilitate genome analysis and gene cloning in barley.  相似文献

Background and aims

Year of release of a cultivar reflects the agricultural and breeding practices of its time; we hypothesize that there are differences in mycorrhizal responsiveness of new high yielding and old crop plants and landraces. We evaluated the importance of the year of release on mycorrhizal responsiveness, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal root colonization and P efficiency. We also analyzed the effect of experimental treatments, P efficiency (P acquisition and P utilization efficiency) and AM fungal root colonization on a potential mycorrhizal responsiveness trend for year of release.

Methods

We conducted a meta-analysis on 39 publications working on 320 different crop plant genotypes.

Results

New cultivars were less intensely colonized but were more mycorrhiza-responsive (and possibly dependent) compared to ancestral genotypes. This trend was potentially influenced by the moderator variables density, pre-germination, plant, plant type and AMF species. AM root colonization was also important for the mycorrhizal responsiveness trend for year of release, but P efficiency was not.

Conclusions

With the data available we could find no evidence that new crop plant genotypes lost their ability to respond to mycorrhiza due to agricultural and breeding practices.  相似文献

Social dominance is widely known to facilitate access to food resources in many animal species such as deer. However, research has paid little attention to dominance in ad libitum access to food because it was thought not to result in any benefit for dominant individuals. In this study we assessed if, even under ad libitum conditions, social rank may allow dominant hinds to consume the preferred components of food. Forty-four red deer hinds (Cervus elaphus) were allowed to consume ad libitum meal consisting of pellets of sunflower, lucerne and orange, and seeds of cereals, corn, cotton, and carob tree. The meal was placed only in one feeder, which reduced accessibility to a few individuals simultaneously. During seven days, feeding behavior (order of access, time to first feeding bout, total time spent feeding, and time per feeding bout) were assessed during the first hour. The relative abundance of each meal component was assessed at times 0, 1 and 5 h, as well as its nutritional composition. Social rank was positively related to the amount of time spent feeding during the 1(st) h (P = 0.048). Selection indices were positively correlated with energy (P = 0.018 during the 1(st) h and P = 0.047 from 1(st) to 5(th)) and fat (only during the 1(st) h; P = 0.036), but also negatively with certain minerals. Thus, dominant hinds could select high energy meal components for longer time under an ad libitum but restricted food access setting. Selection indices showed a higher selectivity when food availability was higher (1(st) hour respect to 1(st) to 5(th)). Finally, high and low ranking hinds had longer time per feeding bout than mid ones (P = 0.011), suggesting complex behavioral feeding tactics of low ranking social ungulates.  相似文献

Many organisms adjust their reproductive phenology in response to climate change, but phenological sensitivity to temperature may vary between species. For example, resident and migratory birds have vastly different annual cycles, which can cause differential temperature sensitivity at the breeding grounds, and may affect competitive dynamics. Currently, however, adjustment to climate change in resident and migratory birds have been studied separately or at relatively small geographical scales with varying time series durations and methodologies. Here, we studied differential effects of temperature on resident and migratory birds using the mean egg laying initiation dates from 10 European nest box schemes between 1991 and 2015 that had data on at least one resident tit species and at least one migratory flycatcher species. We found that both tits and flycatchers advanced laying in response to spring warming, but resident tit populations advanced more strongly in relation to temperature increases than migratory flycatchers. These different temperature responses have already led to a divergence in laying dates between tits and flycatchers of on average 0.94 days per decade over the current study period. Interestingly, this divergence was stronger at lower latitudes where the interval between tit and flycatcher phenology is smaller and winter conditions can be considered more favorable for resident birds. This could indicate that phenological adjustment to climate change by flycatchers is increasingly hampered by competition with resident species. Indeed, we found that tit laying date had an additional effect on flycatcher laying date after controlling for temperature, and this effect was strongest in areas with the shortest interval between both species groups. Combined, our results suggest that the differential effect of climate change on species groups with overlapping breeding ecology affects the phenological interval between them, potentially affecting interspecific interactions.  相似文献

The higher proportion of males of the invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus in samples from two activity selective passive fishing gears compared with one activity non‐selective fishing gear in three Dutch lakes is related to higher male locomotory activity and is a sex‐dependent trait. Background

Thellungiella halophila (also known as Thellungiella salsuginea) is a model halophyte with a small plant size, short life cycle, and small genome. It easily undergoes genetic transformation by the floral dipping method used with its close relative, Arabidopsis thaliana. Thellungiella genes exhibit high sequence identity (approximately 90% at the cDNA level) with Arabidopsis genes. Furthermore, Thellungiella not only shows tolerance to extreme salinity stress, but also to chilling, freezing, and ozone stress, supporting the use of Thellungiella as a good genomic resource in studies of abiotic stress tolerance.

Results

We constructed a full-length enriched Thellungiella (Shan Dong ecotype) cDNA library from various tissues and whole plants subjected to environmental stresses, including high salinity, chilling, freezing, and abscisic acid treatment. We randomly selected about 20 000 clones and sequenced them from both ends to obtain a total of 35 171 sequences. CAP3 software was used to assemble the sequences and cluster them into 9569 nonredundant cDNA groups. We named these cDNAs "RTFL" (RIKEN Thellungiella Full-Length) cDNAs. Information on functional domains and Gene Ontology (GO) terms for the RTFL cDNAs were obtained using InterPro. The 8289 genes assigned to InterPro IDs were classified according to the GO terms using Plant GO Slim. Categorical comparison between the whole Arabidopsis genome and Thellungiella genes showing low identity to Arabidopsis genes revealed that the population of Thellungiella transport genes is approximately 1.5 times the size of the corresponding Arabidopsis genes. This suggests that these genes regulate a unique ion transportation system in Thellungiella.

Conclusion

As the number of Thellungiella halophila (Thellungiella salsuginea) expressed sequence tags (ESTs) was 9388 in July 2008, the number of ESTs has increased to approximately four times the original value as a result of this effort. Our sequences will thus contribute to correct future annotation of the Thellungiella genome sequence. The full-length enriched cDNA clones will enable the construction of overexpressing mutant plants by introduction of the cDNAs driven by a constitutive promoter, the complementation of Thellungiella mutants, and the determination of promoter regions in the Thellungiella genome.  相似文献

Species belonging to the Festuca-Lolium complex are important forage and turf species and as such, have been studied intensively. However, their out-crossing nature and limited availability of molecular markers make genetic studies difficult. Here, we report on saturation of F. pratensis and L. multiflorum genetic maps using Diversity Array Technology (DArT) markers and the DArTFest array.The 530 and 149 DArT markers were placed on genetic maps of L. multiflorum and F. pratensis, respectively, with overlap of 20 markers, which mapped in both species. The markers were sequenced and comparative sequence analysis was performed between L. multiflorum, rice and Brachypodium. The utility of the DArTFest array was then tested on a Festulolium population FuRs0357 in an integrated analysis using the DArT marker map positions to study associations between markers and freezing tolerance. Ninety six markers were significantly associated with freezing tolerance and five of these markers were genetically mapped to chromosomes 2, 4 and 7. Three genomic loci associated with freezing tolerance in the FuRs0357 population co-localized with chromosome segments and QTLs previously identified to be associated with freezing tolerance. The present work clearly confirms the potential of the DArTFest array in genetic studies of the Festuca-Lolium complex. The annotated DArTFest array resources could accelerate further studies and improvement of desired traits in Festuca-Lolium species.  相似文献
