The generation time of organisms drives the rate of change in populations and across evolutionary times. In long‐lived species, generation time should also account for overlapping generations, and the average age of parents has been proposed as a best approximation under these conditions. This study uses this definition to estimate the generation time of a widely studied small primate, Microcebus murinus, based on parentage data generated for a free‐living population over a 6‐year period in northwestern Madagascar. The average age of parents was calculated separately for mothers and fathers of three different offspring cohorts that differed in the degree of demographic uncertainty. In addition, adult survival rates were calculated for males and females based on long‐term capture data from the same population to estimate the possible upper limits of generation time. Adult survival was low with only 44% of adult females and 38% of adult males being recaptured at the beginning of their second breeding season. The average age of mothers was 1.56–1.91 years, pointing toward a 2‐year female generation time due to the high proportion of 1‐year old mothers in all three cohorts. Female generation time estimates were fairly stable across the three offspring cohorts. In contrast, the average age of fathers differed by more than 1 year from the first to the third offspring cohort (1.71–2.83 years) pointing toward a 3‐year generation time, but also suggesting a higher degree of demographic uncertainty in the early years of the study. For future modeling purposes, we, therefore, propose to use the average, 2.5 years, of male and female values as new estimate for the generation time of mouse lemurs. 相似文献

Nutrient cycling and water balance in forest gaps has received little attention until now, although gap regeneration is important to natural dynamics of temperate forests. Gaps of 30 m diameter, cut in a mature beech forest, exhibited a distinct change in microclimatic conditions in comparison with the surrounding stand. Soil moisture in gaps remained very high throughout the observation period. Disruption of the N cycle in gaps led to substantial nitrate losses; seepage water nitrate concentrations were 10–18 mg NO3-N L-1. Excess nitrification was a significant cause of soil acidification and aluminium release. The pH in subsoil seepage water decreased by 0.25. Liming in gaps promoted the establishment of a herbaceous vegetation, which functioned as an important nutrient sink, and thus is recommended for tree regeneration in highly acidified forest ecosystems as it increases the resilience of the ecosystem to nutrient losses. 相似文献

During the CS-EASIZ expedition (ANT XII/3) to the eastern Weddell Sea shelf with RF ‘Polarstern’ in January–March 1996, several
hundred hexactinellids from trawl catches were inspected for associated fauna. At one station, fish egg masses were found
in the suboscular cavities of 18 specimens of hexactinellid sponges belonging to four different species of the genus Rossella. Egg numbers in intact hexactinellids ranged from about 800 to more than 8000. At two stations, pentacrinoids, the sessile
stage of comatulid crinoid development were found attached to the inner dermal membrane of hexactinellids. This is the first
time pentacrinoids have been documented from the high Antarctic. The pentacrinoids mostly formed small groups, but single
individuals were found as well. Neither fish eggs nor pentacrinoids were observed in or on other structures or animals; these
findings stress the overall importance of sponges, especially hexactinellids, as substrates for developmental stages of other
members of the ecosystem.

An NADP+-linked acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.4) from the ethanol producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis was purified 180-fold to homogeneity. The enzyme is a cytosolic protein with an isoelectric point of 8.0 and has an apparent molecular weight of 210000. It showed a single band in sodium dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis with a molecular weight of 55000, which indicates that it consists of four probably identical subunits. The apparent K
m values for the substrate acetaldehyde were 57 M and for the cosubstrate NADP+ 579 M. The enzyme was almost inactive with NAD+ as cofactor. Several other aldehydes besides acetaldehyde were accepted as a substrate but not formaldehyde or trichloroacetaldehyde. In anaerobically grown cells of Zymomonas mobilis the enzyme showed a specific activity of 0.035 U/mg protein but its specific activity could be increased up to 0.132 U/mg protein by adding acetaldehyde to the medium during the exponential growth phase or up to 0.284 U/mg protein when cells were grown under aeration. The plant triterpenes betulin and betulinic acid (BA) are triterpenes featuring interesting pharmacological properties. Starting from substituted betulinic aldehydes, we used them as lead structures for the synthesis of several γ-butyrolactones and butenolides. Their antitumor activity was examined for 15 cancer cell lines using a SRB-assay and their apoptotic action was documented by trypan-blue test and DNA laddering. Several novel betulin derivatives were prepared and evaluated for their antitumor activity. 3-O-Acetylbetulinic aldehyde served as an ideal starting material for the synthesis of 28-acetylenic derivatives. These compounds were further transformed into pyrazoles and 1,2,3-triazoles. Also, the synthesis of 3-amino substituted butenolides was carried out. The compounds were screened for their antitumor activity in a panel of 15 human cancer cell lines in a sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Several compounds showed a noteworthy antitumor activity. In addition, the possibility of encapsulation into liposomes was examined, thereby resulting in an increased cytotoxicity. A tangential flow filtration system for concentrating live pico-and nanoplankton was tested on natural seawater (<20 µm)from Kiel Bight. Twenty- to thirty-fold concentration of samplesranging from 79 to 152 dm3 was easily achieved, the time necessarydepending on sample volume, pumping pressure and filtrate/retentateratio.
