It started with a dream: Paul's dream (Acts 16,9?10) and Aeneas as a biblical example of dreams as intercultural legitimation strategy.

Dreams are often used to promote religion, or to propagate an interpretation of religion, or to bring political ideas to the fore. A dream can be used as an indication of divine help and thus it is a perfect tool for promoting ideas. Dreams figure in religious propaganda in Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions (e.g., in Osama bin Laden's tapes). In classical literature, we find many kings, emperors, or generals who had visions or dreams, especially in association with their accession to power. It is the thesis of this article that in the encounter between Jewish (-Christian) cultures and the Hellenistic world dreams were shared as possible means of divine communication. An important example is the dream in Acts 16,9?10, the most Hellenistic dream of the New Testament. This dream is part of a larger unit, Paul's new move from Asia to Europe. I will try to show that the author of Acts combines here the story of Aeneas (e.g., as told by Virgil) and the story of Jesus, an interesting merging of two cultures. Ethylene and IAA interactions in the inhibition of photoperiodic flower induction of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Pharbitis nil</Emphasis>

It has been shown that both IAA and ethylene application inhibit flower induction in the short-day plant Pharbitis nil. However application of IAA has elevated ethylene production in this plant, as well. Strong enhancement of ethylene production is also correlated with the night-break effect, which completely inhibits flowering. In order to determine what the role of IAA and ethylene is in the photoperiodic flower induction in Pharbitis nil, we measured changes in their levels during inductive and non-inductive photoperiods, and the effects of ethylene biosynthesis and action inhibitors on inhibition of flowering by IAA. Our results have shown that the inhibitory effect of IAA on Pharbitis nil flowering is not physiological but is connected with its effect on ethylene biosynthesis.     

A multisensory integration model of human stance control

A model is presented to study and quantify the contribution of all available sensory information to human standing based on optimal estimation theory. In the model, delayed sensory information is integrated in such a way that a best estimate of body orientation is obtained. The model approach agrees with the present theory of the goal of human balance control. The model is not based on purely inverted pendulum body dynamics, but rather on a three-link segment model of a standing human on a movable support base. In addition, the model is non-linear and explicitly addresses the problem of multisensory integration and neural time delays. A predictive element is included in the controller to compensate for time delays, necessary to maintain erect body orientation. Model results of sensory perturbations on total body sway closely resemble experimental results. Despite internal and external perturbations, the controller is able to stabilise the model of an inherently unstable standing human with neural time delays of 100 ms. It is concluded, that the model is capable of studying and quantifying multisensory integration in human stance control. We aim to apply the model in (1) the design and development of prostheses and orthoses and (2) the diagnosis of neurological balance disorders. Differential regulation of the brain and gut immunoreactive dynorphin by the serotonin system

Administration of drugs such as fenfluramine, 20-40 mg/kg, and m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), 2.5-5 mg/kg, which release serotonin or activate postsynaptic serotonin receptors, respectively, induced a dramatic decrease in the duodenal content of immunoreactive dynorphin (ir-DYN). The effect was antagonized by cyproheptadine, 1 mg/kg. Similarly, acute administration of the specific serotonin reuptake blockers fluvoxamine, 15 mg/kg, or femoxetine, 10 mg/kg, and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), 40-160 mg/kg, evoked a marked decrease in the duodenal content of ir-DYN. A combined administration of fluvoxamine or femoxetine and 5-HTP failed to potentiate the effect of individual treatment. Only a higher dose of fenfluramine, 40 mg/kg, increased the ir-DYN content in the hypothalamus. These results suggest that the brain and gut ir-DYN is independently regulated by the serotonin system and that a serotonin mechanism might stimulate release of the gut dynorphin content.     

Dynamics of bryophytes in a chalk grassland

Dynamics of bryophytes were followed in a chalk grassland in 4 plots, 25×25 cm, each subdivided in to 400 subplots, in which every 3–4 months the presence of all bryophyte species was recorded. During the first 14 months no successional trends were visible. However, dynamics on the scale of one subplot were considerable. Degree of dynamics was markedly negatively correlated with original presence in the plots. Several explanations for this correlation are discussed.     

Application of fuzzy multiobjective optimization for self-sucking impellers in a bioreactor

For three types of self-sucking impellers (fourand six-pipe and disk impellers) mixing power, initial point, amount of gas leaving the impeller and mass transfer coefficient were determined experimentally. Investigations were performed for two systems: water and biomass solution.From the point of view of a minimum mixing power and maximum mass transfer coefficient the best impeller has been chosen. Microbial transformation of azacarbazoles X: Regioselective hydroxylation of 5,11-dimethyl-5H-indolo [2,3-b]quinoline, a novel DNA topoisomerase II inhibitor, by Rhizopus arrhizus

Summary Microbial transformation of cytotoxic 5,11-dimethyl-5H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoline (a compound displaying antitumor activity and affecting the activity of calf thymus DNA topoisomerase II) was performed by the Rhizopus arrhizus strain and yielded a 9-hydroxy derivative. The metabolite obtained displayed a stronger cytotoxity against KB cells than the parent compound (ID₅₀=0.001 mol/mL), and stimulated also the formation of calf thymus topoisomerase II mediated pSP65 DNA cleavage in vitro at the concentration of 3 M. Being analogous to 9-hydroxyellipticine (which is an antitumor alkaloid), this novel indolo[2,3-b] quinoline derivative can be regarded as a novel potential antitumor agent.     

Amino-modified silicate gels prepared by sol-gel processing as metal-ion sorbents

Two series of amino-modified silicate gels prepared by sol-gel processing were used to absorb Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Cr(III) from aqueous solutions. These easily prepared sorbents with various content of primary amino groups in series (A) or primary and secondary amino groups in series (AA) have reasonable stability. The gel composition, time and concentration dependence of the uptake of the metal ions by these materials were studied systematically. These materials would be further used as supports to disperse catalytically active phases by conventional wet chemical procedures. Apart from this they demonstrate potential for the preconcentration aid for transition metal analysis.
