Background
There is no global definition of a heatwave because local acclimatisation and adaptation influence the impact of extreme heat. Even at a local level there can be multiple heatwave definitions, based on varying temperature levels or time periods. We investigated the relationship between heatwaves and health outcomes using ten different heatwave definitions in Brisbane, Australia.Methodology/Principal Findings
We used daily data on climate, air pollution, and emergency hospital admissions in Brisbane between January 1996 and December 2005; and mortality between January 1996 and November 2004. Case-crossover analyses were used to assess the relationship between each of the ten heatwave definitions and health outcomes. During heatwaves there was a statistically significant increase in emergency hospital admissions for all ten definitions, with odds ratios ranging from 1.03 to 1.18. A statistically significant increase in the odds ratios of mortality was also found for eight definitions. The size of the heat-related impact varied between definitions.Conclusions/Significance
Even a small change in the heatwave definition had an appreciable effect on the estimated health impact. It is important to identify an appropriate definition of heatwave locally and to understand its health effects in order to develop appropriate public health intervention strategies to prevent and mitigate the impact of heatwaves. 相似文献103.

Primary hereditary cataract (HC) is one of the most common disorders in purebred dogs and is a leading cause of blindness. Boston Terriers suffer from 2 distinct forms of HC which occur at different ages and which are different in their appearance and progression. Early-onset hereditary cataract (EHC) affects dogs within the first few months of life, is always progressive and bilateral, and results in total blindness, whereas late-onset hereditary cataract (LHC) in general affects dogs over the age of 3 and is more variable in its clinical phenotype, age of onset, progression, and the degree to which vision is impaired. A mutation in HSF4 has recently been reported in a small number of Boston Terriers affected with EHC. In this study, we analyzed 22 additional Boston Terriers affected with early-onset cataract to confirm that the HSF4 mutation is causative for this form of cataract in this breed. In addition, we analyzed 40 Boston Terriers that were either clinically clear or affected with LHC for the presence or absence of the HSF4 mutation. By also sequencing HSF4 in dogs affected with LHC, we conclude that HSF4 is not associated with the development of the late-onset form of cataract and that the 2 forms of cataract in this breed are therefore genetically discrete conditions. 相似文献

Although plant‐inhabiting ants are known to act as effective deterrents to a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores, this has been reported only once before for primates, a group better known for their predation of ants. In the present study, we investigated the effects that colonies of Pseudomyrmex viduus ants living in individual Macrolobium acaciifolium (Fabaceae) trees have on the rates of visitation and fruit removal by four taxa of seed‐predating vertebrates: the primate Cacajao melanocephalus ouakary; macaws (Ara spp.); large parrots (Amazona spp.); and the Northern Amazonian red squirrel (Sciurus igniventris). We found that ant presence significantly reduced both rates of visitation and of fruit removal by C. m. ouakary. The same pattern of reduced fruit removal was also observed for other seed predators (parrots, macaws, and squirrels) but not for visitation rates (although this may be a result of the small sample size). These microbes and related members of the genus Streptococcus produce an array of toxins that act against human cells or tissues, resulting in impaired immune responses and subversion of host physiological processes to benefit the invading microorganism. Streptococcus pyogenes is also known as group A Streptococcus (GAS) and is an important human pathogen that causes considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide. The GAS serotype M1T1 clone is the most frequently isolated serotype from life-threatening invasive (at a sterile site) infections, such as streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis. Here, we describe the virulence factors and newly discovered molecular events that mediate the in vivo changes from non-invasive GAS serotype M1T1 to the invasive phenotype, and review the invasive-disease trigger for non-M1 GAS. Understanding the molecular basis and mechanism of initiation for streptococcal invasive disease may expedite the discovery of novel therapeutic targets for the treatment and control of severe invasive GAS diseases. 相似文献
