Unrelated and previously unfamiliar male mice were maintained in groups of six tor different periods and at different ambient temperatures. High- and low-ranking males differed in hormone-related resistance to a subsequent experimental infection with the blood protozoan Babesia microti and there were rank differences in the apparent modulation of immunodepressive hormones relative to an individual's internal, social and physical environment. Resistance to B. microti was influenced by serum concentrations of corticosterone and testosterone. Associations between aggressiveness and measures of immunocompetence and resistance were related to corticosterone concentration, but only among low rankers. Effects of testosterone on resistance were confined to high rankers but were not associated with aggressiveness, although high rankers maintained greater aggressiveness than low rankers in all experimental treatments. The effects of group duration and temperature on resistance can be interpreted in terms of changing hormone and antibody levels in relation to metabolic stress. The results emphasize the importance of interactions between underlying physiological changes in relationships between behaviour, immune function and disease. 相似文献

In order to predict which ecosystem functions are most at risk from biodiversity loss, meta-analyses have generalised results from biodiversity experiments over different sites and ecosystem types. In contrast, comparing the strength of biodiversity effects across a large number of ecosystem processes measured in a single experiment permits more direct comparisons. Here, we present an analysis of 418 separate measures of 38 ecosystem processes. Overall, 45 % of processes were significantly affected by plant species richness, suggesting that, while diversity affects a large number of processes not all respond to biodiversity. We therefore compared the strength of plant diversity effects between different categories of ecosystem processes, grouping processes according to the year of measurement, their biogeochemical cycle, trophic level and compartment (above- or belowground) and according to whether they were measures of biodiversity or other ecosystem processes, biotic or abiotic and static or dynamic. Overall, and for several individual processes, we found that biodiversity effects became stronger over time. Measures of the carbon cycle were also affected more strongly by plant species richness than were the measures associated with the nitrogen cycle. Further, we found greater plant species richness effects on measures of biodiversity than on other processes. The differential effects of plant diversity on the various types of ecosystem processes indicate that future research and political effort should shift from a general debate about whether biodiversity loss impairs ecosystem functions to focussing on the specific functions of interest and ways to preserve them individually or in combination. 相似文献

Ecnomus mennelli sp.n. from Lake Naivasha, Kenya, belongs to the natalensis‐group. E. thomasseti was also found at the lake, and these are the first records of Trichoptera from Naivasha. Adults and larvae of both species were collected, and an analysis of the gut contents of the larvae showed them to be mainly predator y on small invertebrates. This study determined the effects of contact with DEET on guinea pig skin on mortality, probing time, blood feeding rate, engorgement time, and fecundity responses in female Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say. Exposure, in this manner, to 10% DEET (in ethanol) for 5 min, resulted in 98% mortality in mosquitoes after 24h. The median probing time (PT(50)) required by females, when exposed to 0.1%, 1.0%, and 10% DEET, was significantly (P<0.0001) longer (12.5, 12.1, and 19.1s, respectively) than the 6.8s required by females to probe ethanol-treated skin (control). Similarly, mean blood feeding rates in populations of females exposed to 1.0% DEET for < or = 5 min (14.4%) was 6x lower (P<0.001) (85.5%) than in females exposed to ethanol-treated skin, whereas the mean engorgement time on skin treated with 1.0% DEET (66.3s) was significantly shorter (P<0.0001) than for females feeding on the control guinea pigs (105.9s). The mean number of mature o?cytes per female (fecundity) in treatment (1.0% DEET) and control mosquitoes was not significantly different. The responses to DEET observed in this study suggest that repeated exposure of female A. quadrimaculatus populations to this repellent, in laboratory bioassays, could result in confounding of toxicant and repellent effects and inaccurate estimates of DEET repellency. 相似文献

Habitat loss is the most prevalent threat to biodiversity in North America. One of the most threatened landscapes in the United States is the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) ecosystem, much of which has been fragmented or converted to non‐native grasslands via the cheatgrass‐fire cycle. Like many sagebrush obligates, greater sage‐grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) depend upon sagebrush for food and cover and are affected by changes to this ecosystem. We investigated habitat selection by 28 male greater sage‐grouse during each of 3 years after a 113,000‐ha wildfire in a sagebrush steppe ecosystem in Idaho and Oregon. During the study period, seeding and herbicide treatments were applied for habitat restoration. We evaluated sage‐grouse responses to vegetation and post‐fire restoration treatments. Throughout the 3 years post‐fire, sage‐grouse avoided areas with high exotic annual grass cover but selected strongly for recovering sagebrush and moderately strongly for perennial grasses. By the third year post‐fire, they preferred high‐density sagebrush, especially in winter when sagebrush is the primary component of the sage‐grouse diet. Sage‐grouse preferred forb habitat immediately post‐fire, especially in summer, but this selection preference was less strong in later years. They also selected areas that were intensively treated with herbicide and seeded with sagebrush, grasses, and forbs, although these responses varied with time since treatment. Wildfire can have severe consequences for sagebrush‐obligate species due to loss of large sagebrush plants used for food and for protection from predators and thermal extremes. Our results show that management efforts, including herbicide application and seeding of plants, directed at controlling exotic annual grasses after a wildfire can positively affect habitat selection by sage‐grouse. 相似文献

Cytoplasmic polyadenylation-induced mRNA translation is a hallmark of early animal development. In Xenopus oocytes, where the molecular mechanism has been defined, the core factors that control this process include CPEB, an RNA binding protein whose association with the CPE specifies which mRNAs undergo polyadenylation; CPSF, a multifactor complex that interacts with the near-ubiquitous polyadenylation hexanucleotide AAUAAA; and maskin, a CPEB and eIF4E binding protein whose regulation of initiation is governed by poly(A) tail length. Here, we define two new factors that are essential for polyadenylation. The first is symplekin, a CPEB and CPSF binding protein that serves as a scaffold upon which regulatory factors are assembled. The second is xGLD-2, an unusual poly(A) polymerase that is anchored to CPEB and CPSF even before polyadenylation begins. The identification of these factors has broad implications for biological process that employ polyadenylation-regulated translation, such as gametogenesis, cell cycle progression, and synaptic plasticity. 相似文献
