Presently, three Pseudodromia sponge crab species are recognized, all of which are endemic to the continental shelf off the coast of South Africa. Two of these differ only in the morphology of their rostral teeth, making them difficult to distinguish, and can thus be considered as cryptic species. In addition they have very similar distribution ranges, thus raising doubts as to their specific status. Discriminant function analysis of morphometric data, differentiation at 10 allozyme loci, and sequence data derived from the 12S rRNA mitochondrial gene were used to test whether specimens identified as P. latens and P. rotunda are morphological forms of a single, widespread species, or represent two, distinct, reproductively isolated species, and to establish whether these two taxa are sister species, and thus form a monophyletic entity. The presence of fixed allele differences at three, and strong genetic heterogeneity at five other allozyme loci, indicating no gene flow occurring between sympatric populations, as well as the relatively high degree of 12S rRNA and allozyme genetic differentiation observed, supported the recognition of P. latens and P. rotunda as separate species. The 12S rRNA topology suggested that the genus Pseudodromia , as presently constituted, is paraphyletic, thus inferring that the morphological characters used to define this taxon might not be useful for phylogenetic inferences. It was concluded that in view of the uncertainties raised regarding the designation and composition of certain genera within the family Dromiidae, further rigorous analyses of morphological and genetic data are needed to further our understanding of the taxonomy of the sponge crabs. 相似文献

Private financing for long-term care now comes almost exclusively from out-of-pocket payments. Long-term-care costs quickly impoverish most elderly, resulting in Medicaid dependency. The consequences are profound for the western Sun Belt with its rapidly growing elderly population. Key private financing options are long-term-care individual retirement accounts (LTC/IRAs), home equity conversion, social-health maintenance organizations and long-term-care insurance. Study of data from the past half century suggests that the LTC/IRA approach would prove unsatisfactory for the purpose despite the intuitive appeal of this mechanism. Experience with home equity conversions is still very limited, and unresolved questions limit this approach to the role of a reserve option for now. While promising, social-health maintenance organizations are still in the experimental stages and not yet commercially available. Long-term-care insurance is currently sold on a thin market and emphasizes nursing home coverage. New approaches to private financing through long-term-care insurance seem to offer the best approach for immediate implementation. 相似文献

In vitro measurements were made of transmural potential difference (PD), short-circuit current (Isc), resistance and unidirectional fluxes of 22Na and 36Cl across the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon of normal sodium-replete domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus). The PD ranged from about 1 mV across the duodenum to 8 mV across the colon while the Isc was, respectively, 2.8 and 64 microA X cm-2. The jejunum and ileum exhibited values between these extremes. Unidirectional fluxes (under short-circuit conditions) of Na and Cl were lowest across the duodenum where there was no evidence of active transport of these ions. Unidirectional fluxes of Na and Cl were less across the jejunum than across the ileum or colon. A net active transport of Na (but not Cl) was observed in the ileum (= 106% of the Isc) and colon (= 50% of Isc). The possible physiological significance of these observations in the domestic fowl are discussed and are compared to that of a mammal, the rabbit. 相似文献

High-light treatments (1750–2000 mol photons m–2 · s–1) of leaves from a number of higher-plant species invariably resulted in quenching of the maximum 77K chlorophyll fluorescence at both 692 and 734 nm (F
M, 692 and F
M, 734). The response of instantaneous fluorescence at 692 nm (F
O, 692) was complex. In leaves of some species F
O, 692 increased dramatically in others it was quenched, and in others yet it showed no marked, consistent change. Regardless of the response of F
O, 692 an apparently linear relationship was obtained between the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (F
V/F
M, 692) and the photon yield of O2 evolution, indicating that photoinhibition affects these two variables to approximately the same extent. Treatment of leaves in a CO2–free gas stream containing 2% O2 and 98% N2 under weak light (100 mol · m–2 · s–1) resulted in a general and fully reversible quenching of 77K fluorescence at 692 and 734 nm. In this case both F
O, 692 and F
M, 692 were invariably quenched, indicating that the quenching was caused by an increased non-radiative energy dissipation in the pigment bed. We propose that high-light treatments can have at least two different, concurrent effects on 77K fluorescence in leaves. One results from damage to the photosystem II (PSII) reaction-center complex and leads to a rise in F

M, 692 ratios were little affected by high-light exposure in normal air, suffered pronounced photoinhibition when the exposure was made under conditions that prevent photosynthetic gas exchange (2% O2, 0% CO2). However, they were still less susceptible than shade leaves, indicating that the higher capacity for energy dissipation via photosynthesis is not the only cause of their lower susceptibility. Spinach-leaf ferredoxin was identified as a calcium-binding protein by 45Ca autoradiography on nitrocellulose membranes and with the cationic carbocyanine dye 1-ethyl-2-[3-(1-ethylnaphtho[1,2-d]thiazolin-2-ylidene)-2-methylpropenyl] naphtho[1,2-d]thiazolium bromide (stains-all). Binding of 45Ca was observed at pH 6.8 and pH 7.8 and in the presence of 5 mM and 20 mM MgCl2. At the higher MgCl2 concentration the Ca2+-binding capacity is reduced. A cloned chicken delta-crystallin cDNA was used to identify two putative delta-crystallin genes in the duck by Southern blot hybridization. A DNA fragment containing most of one of these genes was isolated from a library made in bacteriophage lambda Charon 28A containing genomic DNA from 14-day-old embryonic ducks. Electron microscopy, partial gene sequencing, primer extension analysis using duck mRNA, and comparison with the well-characterized chicken delta-crystallin genes suggest that our cloned duck delta-crystallin gene, like the chicken delta-crystallin genes, is 8-10 kb long and contains 17 exons. Hybridization and sequencing data show great similarity between the homologous 5' untranslated and coding exons of the duck and chicken delta-crystallin genes. Overall, the homologous introns also appear to have approximately 30% sequence similarity, and have been subject to deletion/insertion events. Our partial characterization of duck delta-crystallin gene sequences suggests that this avian and reptilian crystallin family has been conserved during evolution, as have the other crystallin gene families that are expressed in the eye lens. 相似文献

The effect of oxygen on N2-dependent growth of two Azospirillum strains and two diazotrophic rods closely associated with roots of Kallar grass (Leptochloa fusca) was studied. To enable precise comparison, bacteria were grown in dissolved-oxygen-controlled batch and continuous cultures. Steady states were obtained from about 1 to 30 μM O2, some of them being carbon limited. All strains needed a minimum amount of oxygen for N2-dependent growth. Nitrogen contents between 10 and 13% of cell dry weight were observed. The response of steady-state cultures to increasing O2 concentrations suggested that carbon limitation shifted to internal nitrogen limitation when N2 fixation became so low that the bacteria could no longer meet their requirements for fixed nitrogen. For Azospirillum lipoferum Rp5, increase of the dilution rate resulted in decreased N2 fixation in steady-state cultures with internal nitrogen limitation. Oxygen tolerance was found to be strain specific in A. lipoferum with strain Sp59b as a reference organism. Oxygen tolerance of strains from Kallar grass was found to be root zone specific. A. halopraeferens Au 4 and A. lipoferum Rp5, predominating on the rhizoplane of Kallar grass, and strains H6a2 and BH72, predominating in the endorhizosphere, differed in their oxygen tolerance profiles. Strains H6a2 and BH72 still grew and fixed nitrogen in steady-state cultures at O2 concentrations exceeding those which absolutely inhibited nitrogen fixation of both Azospirillum strains. It is proposed that root-zone-specific oxygen tolerance reflects an adaptation of the isolates to the microenvironments provided by the host plant. 相似文献

Summary Playback experiments conducted in a Rocky Mountain, USA, stream determined whether predatory stonefly nymphs (Kogotus modestus; Plecoptera: PerlodiMae) used hydrodynamic cues to discriminate prey species from nonprey species. In the laboratory we recorded pressure wave patterns associated with swimming escape behavior of Baetis bicaudatus (Baetidae), the favored mayfly prey species, and those of a nonprey mayfly, Ephemerella infrequens (Ephemerellidae). We video taped the responses of 24-h starved Kogotus to Baetis playbacks, Ephemerella playbacks or no playbacks made by oscillating (or not) live mayflies (Ephemerella) or clear plastic models placed within in situ flow-through observation boxes. The probability of attacks per encounter with Baetis playbacks was highest and independent of the model type used, but Kogotus also showed an unexpected high probability of attacks per encounter when Ephemerella playbacks were made through live Ephemerella. Thus, Kogotus discriminated between Baetis and Ephemerella swimming patterns but only when playbacks were made through the plastic model. Kogotus never attacked motionless mayflies or motionless plastic models. We allowed some Kogotus to successfully capture one small Baetis immediately before playbacks, which resulted in a much higher probability of attacks per encounter with Baetis playbacks on either model and a heightened discrimination of prey versus nonprey playbacks. The probability of attacks per encounter by Kogotus with live Baetis swimming under similar experimental conditions was strikingly similar to its response to Baetis playbacks made by oscillating the plastic model after a successful capture. Order of playback presentation (Baetis first or Ephemerella first) did not influence predatory responses to mayfly swimming patterns. This study is the first to document the use of hydrodynamic cues by stream-dwelling predators for discrimination of prey from nonprey and provides a mechanism to explain selective predation by stoneflies on Baetis in nature. 相似文献

Auxin Asymmetry during Gravitropism by Tomato Hypocotyls 总被引:9,自引:6,他引:3
Gravitropic asymmetry of auxin was observed in hypocotyls of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) soon after horizontal placement: the ratio of apically supplied [3H]IAA collected from the lower sides to that from the upper sides was about 1.4 between 5 and 10 minutes. This was adequately early to account for the beginning of curvature. The auxin asymmetry ratio rose to about 2.5 between 20 and 25 minutes, and to 3.5 during the main phase of curvature. This compares reasonably well with the roughly 3.9 ratio for elongation on the lower side to elongation on the upper side that is the basis for the curvature. These data extend evidence that the Went-Cholodny theory for the mediation of tropisms is valid for dicot stems. Also consistent with the theory, an auxin asymmetry ratio of 2.5 was observed when wrong-way gravitropic curvature developed following application of a high level of auxin. In addition to reversing the asymmetry of elongation, the large supplement of auxin resulted in lower net elongation.
