Does species diversity limit productivity in natural grassland communities?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Theoretical analyses and experimental studies of synthesized assemblages indicate that under particular circumstances species diversity can enhance community productivity through niche complementarity. It remains unclear whether this process has important effects in mature natural ecosystems where competitive feedbacks and complex environmental influences affect diversity–productivity relationships. In this study, we evaluated diversity–productivity relationships while statistically controlling for environmental influences in 12 natural grassland ecosystems. Because diversity–productivity relationships are conspicuously nonlinear, we developed a nonlinear structural equation modeling (SEM) methodology to separate the effects of diversity on productivity from the effects of productivity on diversity. Meta-analysis was used to summarize the SEM findings across studies. While competitive effects were readily detected, enhancement of production by diversity was not. These results suggest that the influence of small-scale diversity on productivity in mature natural systems is a weak force, both in absolute terms and relative to the effects of other controls on productivity.  相似文献

The crystal structure of the model tripeptide Boc-Aib-Gly-Leu-OMe ( 1 ) reveals two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit that adopt “enantiomeric” type I and type I′ β-turn conformations with the Aib and Gly residues occupying the corner (i + 1 and i + 2) positions. 13C cross polarization and magic angle sample spinning spectra in the solid state also support the coexistence of two conformational species. 13C-nmr in CDCl3 establishes the presence of a single species or rapid exchange between conformations. 400 MHz 1H-nmr provides evidence for conformational exchange involving a major and minor species, with β-turn conformations supported by the low solvent exposure of Leu(3) NH and the observation of NiH ↔ Ni+1H nuclear Overhauser effects. CD bands in the region 190–230 nm are positive, supporting a major population of type I′ β-turns. The isomeric peptide, Boc-Gly-Leu-Aib-OMe ( 2 ), adopts an “open” type II′ β-turn conformation in crystals. Solid state and solution nmr support population of a single conformational species. Chiral perturbation introduced outside the folded region of peptides may provide a means of modulating screw sense in achiral sequences. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Detection of food-borne bacteria present in the food products is critical to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Intelligent quality sensors are being developed for detecting bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella in beef. One of our research thrusts was to develop novel sensing materials sensitive to specific indicator alcohols at low concentrations. Present work focuses on developing olfactory sensors mimicking insect odorant binding protein to detect alcohols in low concentrations at room temperature. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based sensor in conjunction with synthetic peptide was developed to detect volatile organic compounds indicative to Salmonella contamination in packaged beef. The peptide sequence used as sensing materials was derived from the amino acids sequence of Drosophila odorant binding protein, LUSH. The sensors were used to detect alcohols: 3-methyl-1-butanol and 1-hexanol. The sensors were sensitive to alcohols with estimated lower detection limits of <5 ppm. Thus, the LUSH-derived QCM sensors exhibited potential to detect alcohols at low ppm concentrations.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to assess the utility of the cellular and extracellular constituents of Bacillus megaterium for the flotation of sphalerite and galena minerals. Based on the flotation results on the individual minerals, it was observed that sphalerite was preferentially floated compared to galena. A maximum selectivity index (SI) value of 11.7 was achieved in the presence of the soluble fraction of the thermolysed cells, which was higher than that obtained with the intact cells (SI of 6.5) and the insoluble fraction of the thermolysed cells (SI of 9.6). The results of the various enzymatic treatment tests revealed that extracellular DNA played a vital role in the selective flotation of sphalerite. A noteworthy finding was that the single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) had a higher biocollector capacity vis-à-vis the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), leading to better flotation efficiency. About 95 % recovery of sphalerite could be achieved from the mineral mixture by the combined addition of the ssDNA with the non-DNA components of the bacterial cells, resulting in a maximum SI of 19.1. Calcium and phosphate components of the nutrient media were found to be essential for better selectivity of separation of sphalerite. The mechanisms of microbe–mineral interaction are discussed.  相似文献

Two indices, Simple Resultant Index ( R s) and Weighted Resultant Index ( R H), are proposed for enabling the analysis of stomach contents of fishes. The indices are based on percentage occurrence and percentage volume, as in the case of the Index of Preponderance. Possible graphical representation of the indices helps towards understanding the relative representation of the two contributing parameters. The weighted index is, in particular, a means of comparison, grading food items in the order of importance.  相似文献

The mitochondria of liver of Yoshida ascites tumour-bearing rats contained two forms of protein kinase distinguishable on the basis of their kinetic properties, substrate specificity and responses to cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP). One of these (kinase I) was activated 2-3 fold by cAMP while the other form (kinase II) was insensitive to the action of cAMP. Kinase I which was selective towards histone F1 as substrate was obtained as a homogeneous preparation and was observed to have a molecular weight of 170 000 by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration. Protein kinase II appeared to be a smaller protein with molecular weight of 54 000 and was specific towards acidic proteins namely casein and phosvitin. Protein kinases isolated from liver mitochondria of normal rats showed variations in respect to elution profile of DEAE-cellulose and electrophoretic mobility. The preparation corresponding to kinase I did not show stimulatory responses to cAMP.  相似文献
