To evaluate breastfed infants' responses to scented objects, we videotaped the facial and bodily reactions of sixty-three infants as they explored, in succession, three toys that were identical in appearance but different in their characteristic odor. Two of the toys were scented with odorants previously shown to be transmitted to human milk, one with ethanol and the other with vanilla, whereas the third toy was unscented. Each videotape was subjected to frame-by-frame analysis to measure a variety of behaviors that are considered either to be exploratory in nature in that they lead to perceptual information about the object or to reflect the infants' hedonic reaction. Analyses of these behaviors revealed that the infants looked more and vocalized less in the presence of the vanilla-scented toy and spent less time manipulating the ethanol-scented toy when compared with the unscented toy. Moreover, differential exposure to the odors of ethanol and vanilla, as indicated by differential consumption of alcohol by a parent or use of vanilla-scented product by the mother, was related to differential responses to these odors. These findings suggest that human infants are able to detect and retain information about the chemical features of their environment.   相似文献

The frontal wall of Schizoporella unicornis (Johnston) develops as a partition of the coelom just before ascus formation. The ascus develops proximally from the proximal border of the aperture. S. unicornis, therefore, belongs to the monothetic Order Cryptocystidea. The outer part of the opercular cuticle is lost during development.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone is responsible for regulating metamorphosis and reproduction in insects. Analysis of key elements of juvenile hormone regulation would enhance the understanding of this complex mechanism. Juvenile hormone esterase plays an important role in maintaining juvenile hormone titres in insects. In this study, effects of knockdown of juvenile hormone esterase gene (jhe) in Bemisia tabaci were studied using RNA interference (RNAi) technique. dsRNA corresponding to two conserved regions of jhe gene, substrate binding pocket site (jhe1), catalytic triad site (jhe2), green fluorescent protein gene (gfp) as control were synthesized. dsRNAs incorporated in artificial diet (20% sucrose solution) @ 2.5, 1.0, 0.5 and 0.1 μg/μl were fed to adult whiteflies for 48 h, followed by shifting whiteflies to live plants for next generation biology study. Based on qRT-PCR analyses, reduced jhe gene expression was observed in adult whiteflies after dsRNA feeding @ 2.5 and 1.0 μg/μl. jhe gene knockdown affects the survival and reproduction of whiteflies adversely in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, oral feeding of dsRNA to adult whiteflies @ 2.5 and 1.0 μg/μl showed adverse effects on next generation of whitefly viz., lower egg hatchability and shortened egg incubation period. Minimum number of viable eggs (1.04 and 1.80 eggs/female) were observed when whiteflies were fed with highest concentration of dsjhe1 and dsjhe2 as compared to control (16.58 eggs/female). These data suggest that jhe gene acts as a major biological player in whitefly and its progeny and further indicate to be potential target for managing whitefly population.  相似文献

Genera of Eutheiini are reviewed and Eutheimorphus is removed from this tribe of ant‐like stone beetles (Scydmaeninae) and transferred to Cephenniini. A monogeneric Marcepaniini trib.n. is described to accommodate Marcepania gen.n. from Malaysia, with five species: M. semengohensis sp.n. (the type species of Marcepania), M. tuberculata sp.n. , M. seramaensis sp.n. , M. minutissima sp.n. and M. elongata sp.n. A phylogenetic analysis of all genera of Cephenniini, Eutheiini and Marcepaniini based on adult morphological characters resulted in recovering a well‐supported monophyletic clade Eutheiini + (Marcepaniini + Cephenniini) and these tribes are included in Cephenniitae stat.n. (Eutheiini and Cephenniini are therefore removed from Scydmaenitae). Only a weak support for monophyly of Eutheiini was found, but morphological characters allow for maintaining this presumably relic group as a separate tribe. Previously proposed monophyletic groups within Cephenniini were recovered as such, but after inclusion of Eutheimorphus, a sister taxon to the ‘Cephennomicrus group’, the latter lineage gained weak statistical support. The evolutionary history of Cephenniitae is discussed, with focus on known northern hemisphere fossils classified in Scydmaenitae and Hapsomelitae, but possibly closely allied to Cephenniitae. Establishing the supertribe Cephenniitae is the first step toward a profound reclassification of Scydmaeninae on a robust phylogenetic basis. Communication organs (septulae) of cheilostome Bryozoa are more complex than perviously believed. Annuli, present only in lateral septulae, are thickenings of the intercalary cuticle. Each communication pore is filled with a ring-like “pore cincture,” through which project a pair of “special cells.” Septulae of all species examined (10 species from 6 families) can be considered modifications of the same structure, varying only in degree of calcification and number of communication pores. External walls, including basal and lateral walls, are best defined as reinforcements of the ectocyst, which is derived by intussusception from the primary cuticle of the ancestrula. The lateral ectocyst must be considered a double layer formed by invagination of the distal ectocyst. Internal walls are developed by apposition from inner parts of the ectocyst; they include pore plates and transverse walls. External walls are laid down first. Lenticular masses develop unilaterally on the uncalcified lateral ectocyst; the pore plate develops by apposition from the interior part of the ectocyst. Depending on the species, the pore plate may or may not be calcified at the time of its formation. Communication pores are formed when the developing pore plate abuts against embryonic special cells. The septular ectocyst never calcifies; it breaks down when the pore plate is complete. Some ascophorans undergo “reparative budding,” in which new zoids are formed within dead zoecia. Hollow, ectocyst-covered buds lined with blastemic epithelia are produced from septulae of live zoids; adjacent buds may fuse. These findings are consistent with the view that lateral septulae are aborted zoids and that pore plates represent transverse walls.  相似文献

Silver-stained chromosome spreads from the phylactolaemate ectoprocts Fredericella indica, Fredericella browni, Plumatella repens, Pectinatella magnifica and Asajirella gelatinosa show that each of these species has a single pair of NORs. In the first four species each NOR is immediately adjacent to the centromere of a large metacentric chromosome. Giemsa-stained preparations from Cristatella mucedo show centromeric gapping in a similar large metacentric, indicating the same type of NOR-chromosome. In Asajirella gelatinosa the two NORs are on a pair of smaller chromosomes, and are not immediately adjacent to a centromere. A close NOR-centromere association would inhibit meiotic crossing over in the NOR region. Since in phylactolaemates reproduction is primarily asexual, often by formation of statoblasts, there is potential intraclonal selection for favorable ribosomal DNA (rDNA) mutations, including from simultaneous germination of otherwise genetically identical statoblasts within a limited area and competition between cell lines within statoblasts. Inhibition of meiotic crossing over within the NOR would maintain its integrity during periods when intraclonal selection would not be occurring. This suggests that a more rapid rate of rDNA evolution is possible in phylactolaemates than in most other organisms, and is consistent with a derivation of this group from the morphologically similar phoronids, despite phylogenetic interpretations of rDNA sequence data that suggest the two groups are not closely related.  相似文献
