Host activity and the risk of nest parasitism by brown-headed cowbirds   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Proportions of nests parasitized by brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) vary greatly among host species, but factors underlyingthis variation remain poorly understood. Cowbirds are believedto find nests by watching host behavior. We tested the hypothesisthat the activity of hosts during nest building correlateswith the probability of parasitism among and within four sympatrichosts: dusky flycatchers (Empidonax oberholseri), warblingvireos (Vireo gilvus), yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia),and American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla). Daily probabilityof parasitism varied substantially among these species, from3% for dusky flycatchers to more than four times that for warblingvireos. The four species did not differ in the proportion ofcowbirds fledged from their nests. Differences in nest placementdid not explain differences in probability of parasitism amongor within species. Parasitism frequencies increased among speciesthat made longer nest-building visits, had a greater propensityto perch during nest approach, spent more time near their nests,and had males that vocalized more often near nests. Within species, females that visited their nests less often, spent more timeon the nest per visit, and males that sang more and were activein a smaller area around their nests were more likely to beparasitized by cowbirds. These data support the hypothesisthat cowbirds use the activity of hosts during nest buildingto locate nests.  相似文献

A study was done to determine if the differentiation and activation phenotype of T cells in synovial fluid (SF) from patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is associated with T-cell proliferation in situ. Mononuclear cells were isolated from 44 paired samples of peripheral blood and SF. Differentiation and activation markers were determined on CD4 and CD8 T cells by flow cytometry. Cell-cycle analysis was performed by propidium iodide staining, and surface-marker expression was also assessed after culture of the T cells under conditions similar to those found in the synovial compartment. The majority of the T cells in the SF were CD45RO+CD45RBdull. There was greater expression of the activation markers CD69, HLA-DR, CD25 and CD71 on T cells from SF than on those from peripheral blood. Actively dividing cells accounted for less than 1% of the total T-cell population in SF. The presence or absence of IL-16 in T-cell cultures with SF or in a hypoxic environment did not affect the expression of markers of T-cell activation. T cells from the SF of patients with JIA were highly differentiated and expressed early and late markers of activation with little evidence of in situ proliferation. This observation refines and extends previous reports of the SF T-cell phenotype in JIA and may have important implications for our understanding of chronic inflammation.  相似文献

The roles of superoxide and NO in the NaCl-induced upregulation on antioxidant enzyme activity were investigated in NaCl-tolerant cotton calli. Both NaCl and paraquat treatments resulted in significant increases in superoxide production. The activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase, glutathione reductase (GR), and peroxidase also increased significantly within 2 h after applying the stress. Pre-treatment with the superoxide scavenger, N-acetyl l-cysteine (NAC), completely removed the superoxide and inhibited the upregulation of antioxidant enzyme activity in the tissue treated with either NaCl or paraquat. NaCl stress also resulted in a significant increase in the NO level. Experiments were also carried out to measure antioxidant enzyme activity in cotton calli exposed to NO, the NO producer sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and the NO scavenger 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PTIO) under different salt stress conditions. The direct addition of NO gas produced no change in the activities of catalase and GR and caused a significant decrease in APX activity when compared to the controls. When the calli was treated with SNP in the absence of NaCl stress, APX and GR activities decreased significantly and catalase activity was only slightly higher than the control. Treatment with SNP in the presence of NaCl stress resulted in a significant decrease in APX activity, and GR and APX activities were not significantly different from those observed in the NaCl treatment alone. In the presence of PTIO, the activities of all three enzymes increased in the presence or absence of NaCl stress. These results suggest that reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide radicals may serve as signal transduction molecules to switch “on” the early NaCl-induced up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme activity, while NO may play a role in switching “off” the response after other mechanisms in the cascade of events responsible for NaCl tolerance have been activated.  相似文献

1. Sex allocation theory predicts that where dispersal is sex biased, the fitness consequences of producing male or female offspring are mediated by resource availability and maternal competitive ability. Females in poorer condition are expected to favour dispersing offspring to minimize resource competition with kin. Environmental heterogeneity may drive spatial variation in sex allocation through resource competition-related benefits to females and territory quality benefits to dispersing or philopatric offspring. 2. Here, we demonstrate that microhabitat heterogeneity can drive extremely fine-scale spatial heterogeneity in offspring sex allocation. Female bobucks (Trichosurus cunninghami) in temperate rainforest were more likely to produce male offspring than those in surrounding Eucalyptus forest. 3. A maternal physiological effect was identified, in that females of lower body mass were more likely to produce male offspring. This finding is consistent with resource competition predictions, in that smaller females are expected to have poorer competitive ability. 4. Genetic spatial autocorrelation analysis identified males as the more dispersing sex. Furthermore, overproduction of males by mothers in the rainforest habitat was geographically concordant with reduced philopatry, as inferred from spatial genetic analysis. This provides empirical validation of dispersal-related explanations of offspring sex allocation: that production of offspring of the dispersing sex minimizes the potential for resource competition with kin. 5. Spatial variation in dispersal via sex allocation responses to environmental heterogeneity can potentially contribute to spatial patterns in population dynamics.  相似文献

The biogenesis, organization and function of the rhoptries are not well understood. Antisera were prepared to synthetic peptides prepared as multiple antigenic peptides (MAPs) obtained from a Plasmodium yoelii merozoite rhoptry proteome analysis. The antisera were used in immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy of schizont-infected erythrocytes. Twenty-seven novel rhoptry proteins representing proteases, metabolic enzymes, secreted proteins and hypothetical proteins, were identified in the body of the rhoptries by immunoelectron microscopy. The merozoite rhoptries contain a heterogeneous mixture of proteins that may initiate host cell invasion and establish intracellular parasite development.  相似文献

The activation of Ag-specific T cells locally in the CNS could potentially contribute to the development of immune-mediated brain diseases. We addressed whether Ag-specific T cells could be stimulated in the CNS in the absence of peripheral lymphoid tissues by analyzing Ag-specific T cell responses in organotypic brain slice cultures. Organotypic brain slice cultures were established 1 h after intracerebral OVA Ag microinjection. We showed that when OVA-specific CD8(+) T cells were added to Ag-containing brain slices, these cells became activated and migrated into the brain to the sites of their specific Ags. This activation of OVA-specific T cells was abrogated by the deletion of CD11c(+) cells from the brain slices of the donor mice. These data suggest that brain-resident CD11c(+) cells stimulate Ag-specific naive CD8(+) T cells locally in the CNS and may contribute to immune responses in the brain.  相似文献

AimsRepeated treatment with morphine increases antinociceptive effects of delta opioid agonists in rodents by a mechanism that may involve increased cell-surface expression of delta receptors. The present study evaluated effects of repeated morphine treatment on behavioral effects of the delta agonist SNC80 and the mu agonist fentanyl in rhesus monkeys.Main methodsIn an assay of schedule-controlled responding, three monkeys responded for food reinforcement under a fixed-ratio 30 schedule. In an assay of thermal nociception, tail-withdrawal latencies were evaluated in three monkeys using thermal stimulus intensities of 48 and 54 °C. In both assays, the effects of SNC80 (0.032–3.2 mg/kg) and fentanyl (0.001–0.056 mg/kg) were evaluated after repeated treatment with saline or a regimen of morphine doses modeled on the regimen that enhanced delta agonist antinociception and apparent delta receptor availability in previous rodent studies.Key findingsBoth SNC80 and fentanyl dose-dependently decreased rates of schedule-controlled responding, and repeated morphine treatment did not significantly alter these effects. In the assay of thermal nociception, SNC80 had little effect on tail-withdrawal latencies from water heated to 48 or 54 °C, whereas fentanyl increased tail-withdrawal latencies at both temperatures. Repeated morphine tended to increase the antinociceptive effects of SNC80 and to decrease the antinociceptive effects of fentanyl, but these effects of repeated morphine were small and were significant only at the higher stimulus intensity (54 °C).SignificanceThese results provide limited support for the proposition that prior stimulation of mu receptors selectively increases the antinociceptive effects of delta agonists in rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

The soft-tissue interface between skin-mounted markers and the underlying bones poses a major limitation to accurate, non-invasive measurement of joint kinematics. The aim of this study was twofold: first, to quantify lower limb soft-tissue artifact in young healthy subjects during functional activity; and second, to determine the effect of soft-tissue artifact on the calculation of knee joint kinematics. Subject-specific bone models generated from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used in conjunction with X-ray images obtained from single-plane fluoroscopy to determine three-dimensional knee joint kinematics for four separate tasks: open-chain knee flexion, hip axial rotation, level walking, and a step-up. Knee joint kinematics was derived using the anatomical frames from the MRI-based, 3D bone models together with the data from video motion capture and X-ray fluoroscopy. Soft-tissue artifact was defined as the degree of movement of each marker in the anteroposterior, proximodistal and mediolateral directions of the corresponding anatomical frame. A number of different skin-marker clusters (total of 180) were used to calculate knee joint rotations, and the results were compared against those obtained from fluoroscopy. Although a consistent pattern of soft-tissue artifact was found for each task across all subjects, the magnitudes of soft-tissue artifact were subject-, task- and location-dependent. Soft-tissue artifact for the thigh markers was substantially greater than that for the shank markers. Markers positioned in the vicinity of the knee joint showed considerable movement, with root mean square errors as high as 29.3 mm. The maximum root mean square errors for calculating knee joint rotations occurred for the open-chain knee flexion task and were 24.3°, 17.8° and 14.5° for flexion, internal–external rotation and abduction–adduction, respectively. The present results on soft-tissue artifact, based on fluoroscopic measurements in healthy adult subjects, may be helpful in developing location- and direction-specific weighting factors for use in global optimization algorithms aimed at minimizing the effects of soft-tissue artifact on calculations of knee joint rotations.  相似文献
