Exploring the range expansion of the yellow-spotted longhorn beetle Psacothea hilaris hilaris in northern Italy

1. Psacothea hilaris hilaris is an exotic cerambycid detected in Lombardy (northern Italy) in 2005 and now established and undergoing an expansion phase. The species constitutes a serious pest for Ficus spp. and Morus spp.
2. The aim of this work is to update the distribution area of the species in Italy, investigating its expansion over 16 years. Data were acquired through the authors' direct field records and community science, by data mining on national and international web platforms and social networks. Reports were analysed and GPS points plotted in ArcMap 10.8.1 to obtain distribution maps.
3. Of the records collected, 34% were acquired during field surveys, 22% via e-mail and 44% through on-line forums and social networks.
4. Adults of P. h. hilaris showed a long period of activity, from April to the beginning of December, with a peak of presence from June to September. The presence of the pest has been ascertained over six provinces in Lombardy covering an area estimated at more than 1750 km² in 2021. New detections occurred within 2 km of a known infestation from the previous year in 41.6% of cases, and between 2 and 4 km away in 37.7% of cases. The mean rate of range expansion estimated from reported records was 3.17 ± 0.33 km/year from 2010 to 2021. After an initial phase of settlement, the insect is now spreading southward.
5. Given the relevant phytosanitary interest that the species may have for fig plants in Italy and in the Mediterranean Basin, it is fundamental to deepen the knowledge about its flight biology, dynamics and active dispersal capabilities in order to estimate the future range expansion.

     

Flow cytometric immunophenotyping and comparison with immunocytochemistry in small round cell tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To quantitate different antigens by flow cytometric immunophenotyping (FCI) in small round cell tumors (SRCTs) and to compare the FCI technique with immunocytochemistry (IC). STUDY DESIGN: IC and FCI were performed on 24 consecutive cases of SRCT on fine needle aspiration biopsy material using a panel of antibodies--e.g., cytokeratin (CK), leukocyte common antigen (LCA), desmin, epithelial membrane antigen, neuron-specific enolase, chromogranin, retinoblastoma gene product, neuroblastoma clone (NB84a (NB), vimentin and Mic-2 gene product. IC was done by indirect immunoperoxidase and FCI by indirect immunofluorescence onflow cytometry. RESULTS: In Ewing's sarcoma, with the help of FCI, positive results were obtained in an additional 4 samples in CK, 2 samples in actin and 3 samples in desmin. Similarly, one each sample was additional positive regarding Mic-2 and vimentin by IC. In cases of neuroblastoma with the help of FCI, additional positive results were obtained in one each sample of CK, LCA and NB and two in actin. Combined use of FCI and IC helped to show chromogranin positivity in an additional two cases. Divergent differentiation was noted in four cases of Ewing's sarcoma, one neuroblastoma and two peripheral neuroectodermal tumors. CONCLUSION: FCI technique is sensitive, more objective and quantitative in comparison with manual absorbance-based microscopic detection of enzyme immunohistochemistry products. FCI may determine divergent differentiation in SRCTs.     

Acute phase reactants in leprosy.

Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and plasma levels of fibronectin (Fn) were studied in 74 untreated leprosy patients. CRP was detected by latex agglutination in 25.6% of the patients. A significant increase in Fn levels was seen in all the groups of leprosy patients, as compared to the controls.     

Use of Polytomous Logistic Model in Matched Case-Control Studies

Binary logistic model has been found useful for estimating odds ratio in case of dichotomous exposure variable under matched case-control retrospective design. We describe the use of polytomous logistic model for estimating odds ratios when the exposure of prime interests, relative to disease incidence, has more than two levels. An illustrative example is presented and discussed.     

The transnational assemblage of Indian rape culture

We analyse the affective-cultural assemblage of “Indian rape culture” across historical time and social space. We examine news coverage of a highly visible 2012 rape in Delhi in two newspapers, New York Times and Times of India, and the longevity of these articulations through an analysis of online discourses three years later. We further trace colonial-era materializations of Indian rape culture which emerged in the context of the “Indian Mutiny” in contrast to local perspectives, and which were rearticulated by development and human rights organizations. We show that at each moment, Global north voices and institutions dominate. The processes of articulation emanating from Global north institutions serve to realize a racialized transnational assemblage of Indian rape culture. Our framework points to the “soft” power and fluidity of racializing processes, the heterogeneity, and the multiple logics that appear disconnected, but which nonetheless flow and come together to sustain racialized power structures.
