To characterize ventilatory responses to bronchoconstriction during sleep and to assess the effect of prior sleep deprivation on ventilatory and arousal responses to bronchoconstriction, bronchoconstriction was induced in eight asthmatic subjects while they were awake, during normal sleep, and during sleep after a 36-h period of sleep deprivation. Each subject was bronchoconstricted with increasing concentrations of aerosolized methacholine while ventilatory patterns and lower airway resistance (Rla) were continually monitored. The asthmatic patients maintained their minute ventilation as Rla increased under all conditions, demonstrating a stable tidal volume with a mild increase in respiratory frequency. Inspiratory drive, as measured by occlusion pressure (P0.1), increased progressively and significantly as Rla increased under all conditions (slopes of P0.1 vs. Rla = 0.249, 0.112, and 0.154 for awake, normal sleep, and sleep after sleep deprivation, respectively, P less than 0.0006). Chemostimuli did not appear to contribute significantly to the observed increases in P0.1. Prior sleep deprivation had no effect on ventilatory and P0.1 responses to bronchoconstriction but did significantly raise the arousal threshold to induced bronchoconstriction. We conclude that ventilatory responses to bronchoconstriction, unlike extrinsic loading, are not imparied by the presence of sleep, nor are they chemically mediated. However, prior sleep deprivation does increase the subsequent arousal threshold.  相似文献

The effect of eccentric contractions on intracellular Na(+) concentration ([Na(+)](i)) and its distribution were examined in isolated rat and mouse muscle fiber bundles. [Na(+)](i) was measured with either Na(+)-binding benzofuran isophthalate or sodium green. Ten isometric contractions had no significant effect on force (measured after 5 min of recovery) and caused no significant change in the resting [Na(+)](i) (7.2 +/- 0.5 mM). In contrast 10 eccentric contractions (40% stretch at 4 muscle lengths/s) reduced developed force at 100 Hz to 45 +/- 3% of control and increased [Na(+)](i) to 16.3 +/- 1.6 mM (n = 6; P < 0.001). The rise of [Na(+)](i) occurred over 1-2 min and showed only minimal recovery after 30 min. Confocal images of the distribution of [Na(+)](i) showed a spatially uniform distribution both at rest and after eccentric contractions. Gd(3+) (20 microM) had no effect on resting [Na(+)](i) or control tetanic force but prevented the rise of [Na(+)](i) and reduced the force deficit after eccentric damage. These data suggest that Na(+) entry after eccentric contractions may occur principally through stretch-sensitive channels.  相似文献

Members of the family Canidae are distinguished from other carnivore families by pair bonding and male care of the young. Because of the importance of food provisioning and territorial defence by males, social structure among canids is shared or even dominated by males. However, small, insectivorous species of canids show little male parental care, although whether social structure differs from other canids is unknown. We combined data from three independent research projects on a small canid, the swift fox, to help elucidate the social organization of this species. Based on data on movements of 35 adult mated pairs and the fate of litters, we found that adult females maintained territories and family structure, whereas adult males tended to emigrate. This is the first evidence of a female-based social organization among any canid species. This type of social organization probably resulted from the decreased importance of territorial defence and food provisioning by males, as their diet is primarily insectivorous during summer when young are weaned. Our results, along with others, indicate that variations in social structure among canid species are strongly influenced by the importance of food provisioning and territorial defence by males.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This introduction sets out some of the key themes addressed by the papers in the special issue on ‘Confronting the Naturalness of Disaster in the Pacific’. Disasters are now widely understood not as ‘natural’ phenomena but as events or processes that unfold at the intersection between natural or artificial hazards and human populations. We review some of the effects of the naturalisation of disaster before turning to the ways in which Pacific disasters are defined through government, media and public discourses. These discourses feature their own distinctive accounts of possible forms of agency in the context of disaster, and draw on markedly different frames of reference in attributing cause and blame. Similarly, contrasting temporalities and spatialities are invoked in addressing disasters as bounded phenomena. We conclude with reflections on the nature of responses to disaster in the Pacific in the context of increasingly unstable cultural, economic and environmental grounds for action induced by global climate change  相似文献

1. The administration of l-tryptophan to fed rats produces a twofold increase in hepatic phosphopyruvate carboxylase activity that represents a comparable increase in enzyme protein. With specific antibody against the enzyme we have shown that the increase in phosphopyruvate carboxylase is partially mediated via an actinomycin D-sensitive increase in enzyme synthesis. 2. In starved animals tryptophan increases the enzyme activity without any change in the relative rate of phosphopyruvate carboxylase synthesis. In this condition degradation of the enzyme is retarded by tryptophan by a mechanism that is not prevented by cycloheximide.  相似文献
