It’s a knockout: CCN3 suppresses neointimal thickening

The role of CCN proteins in vivo is only just becoming understood. A prototypical member of the CCN family, CCN3 suppresses proliferation. In a study in press, Shimoyama and colleagues show that mice lacking CCN3 have a hyperproliferative response to vascular injury. These data, along with other recent observations, suggest that CCN3 may represent a novel therapy for hyperproliferative diseases.     

Morphological embedding and phonetic reduction: the case of triconstituent compounds

In this paper we propose that the internal bracketing of a word with more than two morphemes is reflected in the phonetic implementation. We hypothesize that embedded forms show more phonetic reduction than forms at higher structural levels (‘Embedded Reduction Hypothesis’). This paper tests the prediction of the Embedded Reduction Hypothesis with triconstituent compounds. The analysis of the durational properties of almost 500 compound tokens shows that there is a lengthening effect on the non-embedded constituent, and a shortening effect on the adjacent embedded constituent. Yet, this predicted effect of embedding interacts with other lexical factors, above all the bigram frequency of the embedded compound. At a theoretical level, these effects mean that the durational properties of the cross-boundary constituents are indicative of the hierarchical structure and of the strength of the internal boundary of triconstituent compounds. Hence, morphological structure is reflected in the speech signal.     

Einfluß von Epicoccum nigrum,Alternaria alternata,Mucor racemosus und Ulocladium chartarum auf die Protozoenpopulation im Pansen des Rindes (in vitro)

The influence of moulded hay (Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, Mucor racemosus, Ulocladium chartarum) and the efficiency of Vitamin B1 substitution to cope these effects on rumen protozoa was investigated using the longterm rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) for about 25 days. Moulded hay affected medium-sized protozoa to a different extent (Alternaria alternata: ?16 %, Epicoccum nigrum: ?27 %, Mucor racemosus: ?9 %, Ulocladium chartarum: +2 %). The vitamin B1 substitution had positive effects during the feeding of Mucor racemosus and Ulocladium chartarum.     

Moniliformin,deoxynivalenol, 3Acetyldeoxynivalenol and zearalenone — Mycotoxins associated with corn cob fusariosis in Poland

An isolated rat liver was perfused with deoxynivalenol (DON) at a dose of 3 mg in a recirculating perfusion system. To identify glucuronide conjugates equal amounts of bile samples, perfusate and liver homogenates were incubated with and without (control) a β-glucuronidase preparation and analyzed by thin layer chromatography and capillary gas liquid chromatography — chemical ionization mass spectrometry. A total of 40.4% of the administered dose of DON was found to be conjugated with glucuronic acid (perfusate 20.4%, bile 19.2%, liver 0.8%), while only 1.3% of the parent DON (perfusate 1.1%, bile 0.2%) was detected. The cleavage of DON-glucuronide was demonstrated by incubating DON-glucuronide containing bile samples with intestine contents under anaerobic conditions.     

Analysis of the effect of medium and membrane conductance on the amplitude and kinetics of membrane potentials induced by externally applied electric fields.

The kinetics and amplitudes of membrane potential induced by externally applied electric field pulses are determined for a spherical lipid bilayer using a voltage-sensitive dye. Several experimental parameters were systematically varied. These included the incorporation of gramicidin into the membrane to alter its conductivity and the variation of the external electrolyte conductivity via changes in salt concentration. The ability of the solution to Laplace's equation for a spherical dielectric shell to quantitatively describe the membrane potential induced on a lipid bilayer could thus be critically evaluated. Both the amplitude and the kinetics of the induced potential were consistent with the predictions of this simple model, even at the extremes of membrane conductance or electrolyte concentration. The success of the experimental approach for this system encourages its application to more complex problems such as electroporation and the influences of external electric fields in growth and development.     

Mechanical role of expiratory muscles during breathing in upright dogs

To examine the mechanical effects of the abdominal and triangularis sterni expiratory recruitment that occurs when anesthetized dogs are tilted head up, we measured both before and after cervical vagotomy the end-expiratory length of the costal and crural diaphragmatic segments and the end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) in eight spontaneously breathing animals during postural changes from supine (0 degree) to 80 degrees head up. Tilting the animals from 0 degree to 80 degrees head up in both conditions was associated with a gradual decrease in end-expiratory costal and crural diaphragmatic length and with a progressive increase in FRC. All these changes, however, were considerably larger (P less than 0.005 or less) postvagotomy when the expiratory muscles were no longer recruited with tilting. Alterations in the elastic properties of the lung could not account for the effects of vagotomy on the postural changes. We conclude therefore that 1) by contracting during expiration, the canine expiratory muscles minimize the shortening of the diaphragm and the increase in FRC that the action of gravity would otherwise introduce, and 2) the end-expiratory diaphragmatic length and FRC in upright dogs are thus actively determined. The present data also indicate that by relaxing at end expiration, the expiratory muscles make a substantial contribution to tidal volume in upright dogs; in the 80 degrees head-up posture, this contribution would amount to approximately 60% of tidal volume.
