The pathogenesis of some cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has been altered with changes in the balance of certain trace and
toxic elements. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in smoker and nonsmoker
male CVD patients (n = 457) of two age groups (31–45) and (46–60). The both elements were determined in biological samples (scalp hair, blood,
and urine) of CVD patients and healthy referents for comparison purpose. The concentrations of Zn and Cd were measured by
atomic absorption spectrophotometer prior to microwave-assisted acid digestion. It was observed that the mean values of Cd
were significantly higher in the biological samples of smokers CVD as compared to nonsmoker CVD patients, while the level
of Zn was lower in both smoker and nonsmoker patients. The concentrations of Zn in whole blood and scalp hair samples were
lower in CVD patients as compared to referents (p > 0.001). Results showed significant changes of levels of Cd and Zn in blood and scalp hair samples of CVD patients when
compared with healthy referents, while reverse in the case of urine samples. It was observed that low Zn levels were associated
with both smoker and nonsmoker CVD patients, while increased cadmium accumulation was observed in smoker patients as compared

The levels of progesterone and estrogen secretion were studied in relationship to the superovulatory response in Jersey cows. Progesterone and estrogen concentrations were measured in superovulated Jersey cows with the objective of correlating the patterns of steroid secretion with embryo yield and quality. Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) was used in combination with prostaglandin F(2) alpha analogue to induce superovulation in 18 multiparous, cyclic cows. Serum progesterone and estradiol levels from cows which exhibited estrus within 24 to 48 h after prostaglandin administration (n=13) were used to estimate the superovulatory response. Sex steroid concentrations at the day of estrus (Day 0) was a strong indicator of embryo yield. Progesterone was negatively (r=-0.56) and estrogen positively (r=0.80) correlated to the number of embryos collected. Dramatic increase in progesterone from Day 0 to Day 7 was a significant indicator of embryo yield. A higher rise of estrogen in the follicular phase was an indicator of a larger number of growing follicles and, consequently, better superovulatory response. Nonresponding animals did not show any significant change in the hormonal profile from the day of PMSG treatment to the day of embryo collection. The estimation of progesterone and estradiol concentrations, simultaneously, gave a more objective prediction of embryo yield. 相似文献

Basal serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone (T) and the responsiveness of these hormones to a challenge dose of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH), were determined in juvenile, pubertal, and adult rhesus monkeys. The monkey gonadotrophins were analyzed using RIA reagents supplied by the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Programme of Human Reproduction. The FSH levels which were near the assay sensitivity in immature monkeys (2.4 +/- 0.8 ng/ml) showed a discernible increase in pubertal animals (6.4 +/- 1.8 ng/ml). Compared to other two age groups, the serum FSH concentration was markedly higher (16.1 +/- 1.8 ng/ml) in adults. Serum LH levels were below the detectable limits of the assay in juvenile monkeys but rose to 16.2 +/- 3.1 ng/ml in pubertal animals. When compared to pubertal animals, a two-fold increase in LH levels paralleled changes in serum LH during the three developmental stages. Response of serum gonadotrophins and T levels to a challenge dose of LHRH (2.5 micrograms; i.v.) was variable in the different age groups. The present data suggest: an asynchronous rise of FSH and LH during the pubertal period and a temporal correlation between the testicular size and FSH concentrations; the challenge dose of LHRH, which induces a significant rise in serum LH and T levels, fails to elicit an FSH response in all the three age groups; and the pubertal as compared to adult monkeys release significantly larger quantities of LH in response to exogenous LHRH. 相似文献

The pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepines (PBDs) are a class of DNA minor groove binding agents that react covalently with guanine bases, preferably at Pu-G-Pu sites. A series of three fluorescent PBD-coumarin conjugates with different linker architectures has been synthesized to probe correlations between DNA binding affinity, cellular localization and cytotoxicity. Although several pharmacological agents are under investigation to be repurposed as therapeutic against COVID-19, not much success has been achieved yet. So, the search for an effective and active option for the treatment of COVID-19 is still a big challenge. The Spike protein (S), RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and Main protease (Mpro) are considered to be the primary therapeutic drug target for COVID-19. In this study we have screened the drugbank compound library against the Main Protease. But our search was not limited to just Mpro. Like other viruses, SARS-CoV-2, have also acquired unique mutations. These mutations within the active site of these target proteins may be an important factor hindering effective drug candidate development. In the present study we identified important active site mutations within the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro (Y54C, N142S, T190I and A191V). Further the drugbank database was computationally screened against Mpro and the selected mutants. Finally, we came up with the common molecules effective against the wild type (WT) and all the selected Mpro. The study found Imiglitazar, was found to be the most active compound against the wild type of Mpro. While PF-03715455 (Y54C), Salvianolic acid A (N142S and T190I), and Montelukast (A191V) were found to be most active against the other selected mutants. It was also found that some other compounds such as Acteoside, 4-Amino-N- {4-[2-(2,6-Dimethyl-Phenoxy)-Acetylamino]-3-Hydroxy-1-Isobutyl-5-Phenyl-Pentyl}-Benzamide, PF-00610355, 4-Amino-N-4-[2-(2,6-Dimethyl-Phenoxy)-Acetylamino]-3-Hydroxy-1-Isobutyl-5-Phenyl-Pentyl}-Benzamide and Atorvastatin were showing high efficacy against the WT as well as other selected mutants. PurposeThis research determines the extent to which farmers benefit from agricultural extension activities and services through realizing higher biological crop yields in the Al-Baha region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the nature of the relationship between the personal, economic and social characteristics of farmers and the degree to which they benefit from agricultural extension activities and services are studied.MethodologyA simple random sample representing the community of 315 farmers was drawn. Data were collected through a personal interview with a pre-tested questionnaire to satisfy the objectives of the study. Data are subjected to analyses and are interpreted in terms of percentages, arithmetic averages, and standard deviations in addition to the simple Pearson correlation coefficients.ResultsThe results show that most of the respondents depend on personal experience, friends, family and neighbors, merchants and sellers of agricultural production supplies as sources of agricultural information for enhanced crop yields. Multiple regression analysis reveals that both the educational status and the agricultural information sources are important factors that increase farmers benefit from extension activities. Farmers receive most benefits from the extension activities and services from bringing in foreign workers, conducting field trips to farms, and identifying problems faced by farmers.Research limitations/implicationsThe outcome of this questionnaire limits generalization of the findings for other parts of the Kingdom due to geographical and natural resources variations.Practical implicationsThe personal and socio-economic characteristics of the surveyed population provide the extension service with insight into their composition – a basis to formulate workable extension programs. For the extension planners of the area, this effort provides a baseline study and may assist with targeting the appropriate farmers and catering the right solutions to the problems. Such a study will help devise meaningful extension programs and save time and resources.Originality/valueLittle previous research on the usefulness of the Extension Service has been conducted in the region.ConclusionsEffective, well-planned extension programs targeting the educated and mature farmers provided more benefits and helped them obtain higher crop yields. 相似文献

Cotyledonary leaves of Cucumis sativus cv. Poinsette exhibited senescence-induced losses in chlorophyll (Chl) and protein contents within three weeks since germination. Chl and protein concentrations in cotyledonary leaves approached maximum on 6th d after germination and they declined to 50 and 41 %, respectively, by the 20th day of growth. Activities of both photosystem (PS) 2 and PS1 decreased by 33 and 31 %, respectively, on the 20th day, compared to the control 6th day. Changes in sensitivity of PS2 to inhibitors like atrazine and dibromothymoquinone and sensitivity of PS1 to KCN accompanied the changes in PS2 and PS1 activities. Hence both the acceptor side of PS2 and the donor side of PS1 are affected by senescence-induced changes in cucumber cotyledonary leaves. 相似文献
