The smoke of Peganum harmala seeds is traditionally used in Iran as a disinfectant agent. The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of two smoke condensates from Peganum harmala seeds. Furthermore the composition of smoke preparations was studied using gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy analysis. The most prevalent compound detected in a dichloromethane extract was harmine. Standard harmine as well as the dichloromethane extract showed antimicrobial activity against all test strains. Harmine was not detected in an n-hexane extract and we did not observe antimicrobial activity from this smoke preparation at the tested concentrations. 相似文献

A facile method for the formation of covalent bonds between protein molecules is zero length cross-linking. This method enables the formation of cross-links without use of any chemical reagents. Here, we report a cross-linking method for lysozyme and some structural studies as well as catalytic activity assay was performed on lysozyme dimer. The results showed that catalytic activity of lysozyme dimer was the same as monomer. Also, the GdnCl-induced equilibrium unfolding of hen egg-white lysozyme monomer and dimer at pH 2 was studied over a temperature range of 290.7-303.2 K by means of CD spectroscopy. The lack of coincidence between two unfolding curves at 222 and 289 nm in lysozyme dimer was observed, which suggested the existence of intermediate state in unfolding process, while lysozyme monomer showed a single cooperative transition. Thus, the thermodynamic parameters were estimated on the basis of two-state mechanism for lysozyme monomer and three-state one for lysozyme dimer. These results indicated that zero length cross-linking can stabilize the intermediate, so the population of intermediate increased. Our results offer a special opportunity to study the role of intermediates in protein folding mechanisms. In addition thermal unfolding of monomer and dimer in 222 nm was achieved. 相似文献

Emerging and re-emerging infections such as SARS (2003) and pandemic H1N1 (2009) have caused concern for public health researchers and policy makers due to the increased burden of these diseases on health care systems. This concern has prompted the use of mathematical models to evaluate strategies to control disease spread, making these models invaluable tools to identify optimal intervention strategies. A particularly important quantity in infectious disease epidemiology is the basic reproduction number, R0. Estimation of this quantity is crucial for effective control responses in the early phase of an epidemic. In our previous study, an approach for estimating the basic reproduction number in real time was developed. This approach uses case notification data and the structure of potential transmission contacts to accurately estimate R0 from the limited amount of information available at the early stage of an outbreak. Based on this approach, we extend the existing methodology; the most recent method features intra- and inter-age groups contact heterogeneity. Given the number of newly reported cases at the early stage of the outbreak, with parsimony assumptions on removal distribution and infectivity profile of the diseases, experiments to estimate real time R0 under different levels of intra- and inter-group contact heterogeneity using two age groups are presented. We show that the new method converges more quickly to the actual value of R0 than the previous one, in particular when there is high-level intra-group and inter-group contact heterogeneity. With the age specific contact patterns, number of newly reported cases, removal distribution, and information about the natural history of the 2009 pandemic influenza in Hong Kong, we also use the extended model to estimate R0 and age-specific R0. 相似文献

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Previous studies have shown that oxidative stress is one of the main underlying mechanisms of arsenic-induced cellular damage. The aim of this study was to assess the serum levels of arsenic and its relationship with lipid peroxidation in MS patients from Tabriz, as the third polluted city of Iran. The study population included 38 MS female patients and 38 age-matched healthy controls. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and arsenic levels were measured using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, respectively. The results showed that the arsenic (P?<?0.01) and MDA (P?=?0.03) levels were significantly higher in patients with MS than those in control. Moreover, serum levels of arsenic and MDA were positively correlated in MS patients. The elevated levels of serum arsenic might explain the increased oxidative stress in MS patients. We suggest that high arsenic levels in serum may lead to MS development, and therefore, exposure to this metal should be limited. 相似文献
