Effect of acid metabolites on the osteoinductive activity of the bone matrix

The osteoinductive activity of bone matrix demineralized in acid metabolites of glycolysis and Krebs cycle have been studied in rats. The highest osteoinductive effect was reached during the demineralization in oxaloacetic acid, the lowest one--in the malic acid. The regulatory role of glycolysis metabolites and Krebs Cycle in posttraumatic osteogenesis is under discussion.     

Cyclic nucleotides in the ontogeny of the chick thymus

The dynamics of cAMP and cGMP content of the thymus homogenate from developing chick embryos and chickens was studied during ante- and postnatal development. Changes in the content of cyclic nucleotides bear an oscillatory pattern. At the early stages of embryogenesis (9 to 11 days of incubation) the content of cyclic nucleotides was low and gradually increased by 13 days of incubation. As the development proceeded, the quantitative and qualitative rearrangement of the thymus cellular composition reflected in changes in the content of cyclic nucleotides. At the same time the curves of cyclic nucleotide content became antiphasic. These reciprocal cAMP to cGMP ratios might reflect the cyclic and synchronous reproduction and functional development of the main bulk of the thymus cellular elements. The maximum content of cAMP and the minimum content of cGMP were recorded on the 17th day of embryogenesis.     

The interphase death of dividing cells. The effect of oxygen and the pH of the medium on the interphase death of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells under the action of ionizing radiation

Interphase death of in vitro irradiated (200 Gy) Ehrlich ascites tumor cells was studied as a function of oxygenation level and medium pH. The presence of oxygen both during and after irradiation as well as the increase in pH from 7.4 to 8.1 were shown to increase interphase death rate. The pronounced threshold dependence of interphase death of cells upon their concentration may be attributed to hypoxia occurring in a pericellular medium when cells concentration exceeds the threshold.     

Cyclic analogs of des-Arg9-[Leu8]bradykinin

Four cyclic derivatives of des-Arg9[Leu8]bradykinin have been obtained by classical methods of peptide chemistry. They are cyclo-(-X-Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Gly-Pro-Leu-), where X=Lys or none, and cyclo-(Y-Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Leu-), where Y= Lys or Orn. Peptide bonds have been formed by the pentafluorophenylester method, and cyclization has been carried out in a diluted dioxane solution with 40% yield. Subsequent cleavage of protecting groups was made by treatment with hydrogen fluoride. The products obtained were purified by droplet counter-current chromatography. These substances liberate histamine from the rat mast cells comparably to bradykinin and fail to produce myotripic and vascular effects.     

A study of substrate specificity of DNA-methylases from Flavobacterium okeanokoites

The specificity of DNA methylase M. FokI towards oligonucleotides containing sequence 5'...GGATG.../3'...CCTAC... was investigated, and N6-methyladenine in the GGATG chain was shown to be the only product of the modification.     

Seasonal changes in the mineral composition of colostrum and milk whey of cows

It is shown that in summer the level of sodium, potassium and calcium in the colostrum and milk serum of cows for the first ten days of lactation is 1.5-2.0 times higher and the content of inorganic phosphorus lower than the analogous indices for cows in winter-spring. The concentration of iron, copper, zinc and chlorides in the colostrum and milk serum of cows in different seasons is unchanged.     

Mathematical approach to modeling of the treatment of suppurative processes

Consideration of an inflammation focus as an "open system" provided analogy between microbiological processes in inflamed wounds and in systems of continuous cultivation of microorganisms. Mathematical modeling of such systems is widely used. Some of the methods for the mathematical modeling were applied to chemoprophylaxis and chemotherapy of postoperative wounds. In modeling continuous cultivation of microorganisms it is usually necessary to determine optimal conditions for the maximum yield of their biomass. In modeling of wound treatment the aim was to determine the process parameters providing the minimum biomass. The described simple models showed that there could be certain optimal flow rate of the washing fluid in the aspiration-washing procedure for wound treatment at which the drug was not completely washed out while the growth rate of the microbial population was minimal. Such mathematical models were shown valuable in optimizing the use of bactericidal and bacteriostatic antibiotics.     

How are sticky chromosomes formed?

Blood lymphocytes in culture were irradiated by gamma-rays 3 h to 30 mn before harvesting. The various induced lesions were analysed, with a particular attention on sticky chromosomes, i.e. radial figures in which chromosomes are not obviously broken, but are linked by a tiny filament. Such anomalies are preferentially induced in mid to late G2-phase. They result from recombinations occurring at nonrandom chromosome regions: junction between hetero- and euchromatin, and telomeric regions. It is proposed that they are formed when double strand breaks are induced while intrachromatidic links have started to be formed in the course of chromosome condensation. If this interpretation is correct, the apparent lack of induced breakage of premitotic chromosomes is artifactual.     

Genetic analysis of the predisposition to uterine myoma. Prevalence and morbidity

Prevalence of uterine myoma (MU) was estimated in several Moscow districts. The overall average estimate of the MU prevalence is 2.45% among women of all groups. The prevalence MU estimates increase with the age, its maximum value reaching 8.31% at the age of 50 years. The morbidity risk estimates increased with the age as well, the maximum value being 2.98% at the age of 40-44 years. The value of "cumulative" morbidity risks, i. e. the probability to be affected, is 9.74% for a population living long enough, this value being based on the age-specific estimates of morbidity risks. Taking into consideration the autopsy data, indicating that frequency of MU, including small myomatous nodes, is 20%, the conclusion is made that MU is manifested by clinically expressed disturbances (urging a woman to address to a doctor) in 50% of cases only. Epidemiological data obtained are to be used later for genetic analysis of familial data on MU.     

Tyrosine and methionine metabolism in various states of melaninogenesis

Excretion with urine of tyrosine and methionine metabolites as well as the activities of enzymes involved in their metabolism are correlated with the state and type of melanin synthesized in the skin. The response of tyrosine aminotransferase to melaninogenesis induction was more pronounced in animals with predominant pheomelaninogenesis, especially after tyrosine load, while that to dopachrome oxidoreductase--in animals with predominant eumelaninogenesis and after methionine load. Glutathione reductase and cystathionine-beta-synthase responded more vigorously to methionine injections, which was especially well pronounced in animals with prominent pheomelaninogenesis and in albino animals. The metabolic "block" in melanine synthesis in albino animals seems to be observed after the 5-S-cysteinyl-DOPA synthesis, whereas the initial steps of melaninogenesis in these animals are identical to pheomelanine synthesis reactions.
