Studying patterns of species invasions over time at multiple spatial scales may help us to elucidate important factors driving those patterns and how they change according to temporal or spatial resolution. Here we provide a large, long‐term, landscape‐scale study of the invasion of three Hieracium species using a dataset that encompasses vegetation change on 124 transects over 25 years across the lower eastern South Island of New Zealand. We investigated the relationships between key environmental and ecological factors and the invasion trajectories of H. lepidulum, H. pilosella and H. praealtum, at two spatial scales: (i) among‐transect colonization and (ii) within‐transect changes in frequency and per cent cover. Our results show that the colonization and spread of Hieracium species among and within transects reflect (i) the importance of initial environmental and biological conditions, (ii) that our sampling captured different periods of the invasion trajectories of each of the three species, and (iii) the effects of differences in life histories of the three species.  相似文献

Water movement from the xylem to stomata is poorly understood. There is still no consensus about whether apoplastic or symplastic pathways are more important, and recent work suggests vapour diffusion may also play a role. The objective of this study was to estimate the proportions of hydraulic conductance outside the bundle sheath contributed by apoplastic, symplastic and gas phase pathways, using a novel analytical framework based on measurable anatomical and biophysical parameters. The calculations presented here suggest that apoplastic pathways provide the majority of conductance outside the bundle sheath under most conditions, whereas symplastic pathways contribute only a small proportion. The contributions of apoplastic and gas phase pathways vary depending on several critical but poorly known or highly variable parameters namely, the effective Poiseuille radius for apoplastic bulk flow, the thickness of cell walls and vertical temperature gradients within the leaf. The gas phase conductance should increase strongly as the leaf centre becomes warmer than the epidermis – providing up to 44% of vertical water transport for a temperature gradient of 0.2 K. These results may help to explain how leaf water transport is influenced by light absorption, temperature and differences in leaf anatomy among species.  相似文献

The potential for the pre‐zygotic plant growth environment to play a role in determining seed longevity was investigated for a species that inhabits arid to semi‐arid Australia. Seed longevity is particularly important for wild populations in fluctuating environments because the longer a seed‐lot is able to survive in the soil seed bank the more likely it is to buffer the population from unpredictable environments. Thus Wahlenbergia tumidifructa plants received wet or dry soil moisture within a warm or cool glasshouse until flowering. Seeds subsequently produced by flowers that opened on the day that plants were moved to a common environment were collected at maturity and longevity assessed by controlled ageing at 60% relative humidity and 45°C. Mean seed longevity was similar for seeds produced by plants that grew in warm‐wet, warm‐dry and cool‐dry conditions (P50 of about 20 days), but extended for plants in cool‐wet conditions (P50 = 41.7 days). Cool temperatures resulted in seeds with a wider distribution of lifespans (σ = 20 days) than warm conditions (σ = 12 days); the large σ caused the extended P50 for cool‐wet plants, but not cool‐dry as a result of a concomitant reduction in initial seed germination (Ki). After moving to the common environment, all plants generated new vegetative material, which went on to produce seeds with similar longevity (P50 approx. 20 days) irrespective of original environment. Visible phenotypic responses of the parent to environmental conditions correlated with longevity and quality parameters of the progeny seeds, suggesting that a parental effect modified seed longevity. Our study provides novel empirical data showing that environmental conditions expected under climate change scenarios may potentially cause seed longevity to decline for a species that inhabits arid to semi‐arid Australia. These negative impacts on population buffering may weaken the storage effect mechanism of species coexistence in fluctuating environments.  相似文献

We have used phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial DNA (COI and COII genes) and ecological niche modelling (ENM) to reconstruct the population history of Argosarchus horridus (White), a widespread species of New Zealand stick insect. These data were used to address outstanding questions on the role of glacial refugia in determining the distribution and genetic structure of New Zealand species. Phylogeographic analysis shows a general pattern of high diversity in upper North Island and reduced diversity in lower North Island and South Island. The ENM indicates that during the last glacial maximum, A. horridus was largely restricted to refugia around coastal areas of North Island. The ENM also suggests refugia on the northeast coast of South Island and southeast coast of North Island and this prediction is verified by phylogeographic analysis, which shows a clade restricted to this region. Argosarchus horridus is also most likely a geographic parthenogen where males are much rarer at higher latitudes. The higher levels of genetic variation in northern, bisexual populations suggest southern and largely unisexual populations originated from southwardly expanding parthenogenetic lineages. Bayesian skyline analysis also provides support for a recent population size increase consistent with a large increase in geographic distribution in the late Pleistocene. These results exemplify the utility of integrating ENM and phylogeographic analysis in testing hypotheses on the origin of geographic parthenogenesis and effects of Pleistocene environmental change on biodiversity.  相似文献

Increase in Levels of Cyclic AMP During Avian Limb Chondrogenesis in vitro   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In the present study the level of cAMP was measured during in vitro chondrogenesis of wing mesenchyme of stage 24 chick embryos and was found to increase significantly from 6.3 pmol/mg protein at the end of the first day of culture to 9.7 pmol/mg protein on the second day, when chondrogenic expression is first detected by the appearance of an Alcian blue staining extracellular matrix. Nonchondrogenic cultures derived from wings of stage 19 embryos had a lower level of cAMP (4.4 ± 0.07 pmol/mg protein). The level of CAMP in intact wings was 4.5 ± 0.4 pmol/mg protein and did not change between stages 19 trough 25. The correlation between increased levels of CAMP and the onset of chondrogenesis is consistent with a role of cAMP in the expression of differentiated functions in chondrocytes, as well as in some other cell types.  相似文献

Male genitalia are among the most rapidly evolving and divergent morphological structures and sexual selection is known to drive this phenomenon in many taxa. Because of their diversity, even within a single genus, genital characters are frequently used to infer relationships among closely‐related species. Moths within the genus Izatha (Xyloryctidae) are ideal candidates for investigating the phylogenetic patterns of genital evolution as they display great variation in male genital structure and complexity. We determined the evolutionary relationships among 31 species of Izatha by constructing a molecular phylogeny of the genus based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene and the isocitrate dehydrogenase and carbamoylphosphate synthase domain protein nuclear genes. This allowed estimations of ancestral male genital character states and patterns of male genital diversification using maximum‐likelihood models. The genus is divided into two well‐supported clades and two poorly supported clades at the root of the phylogeny with incomplete phylogenetic resolution within two species groups, likely due to rapid speciation. Izatha display a number of apomorphic phallic traits including cornuti (sclerotized spines) which are either discharged into the female during copulation (deciduous cornuti) or fixed to the male phallus (compound and fish‐hook cornuti). Within the genus, there is a reduction of secondary genital characters – the uncus and gnathos – but an elaboration of another grasping structure, the juxta; the potential origin and functionality of these male genital traits are discussed. Overall, some male genital characters provided a good indication of species relationships; however, several parts of the complex male genitalia of Izatha show evidence of homoplasy and convergence highlighting the problems of using these traits in determining species relationships. Additionally, this convergence has highlighted that complex genital structures may evolve repeatedly and independently within a lineage.  相似文献

Mature plants of species which characteristically occupy the mobile crests and upper slopes of the central Australian sandridges are more tolerant of sand burial or undercutting than those of the lower slopes and swales. Seedlings growing on the mobile crest areas are susceptible to sand burial, even during wet years.
