The pineal complex may be a part of the sensory and centralneural system controlling thermoregulatory behavior. The pinealand parapineal organs of some ectotherms appear to functionas radiation dosimeters, regulating exposure to sunlight. Physiologicalthermoregulation may be influenced by the pineal complex throughcardiovascular adjustments or metabolic rates. Additionally,the pineal organ may exert thermoregulatory effects throughthe control of brain electrolytes. While the precise mechanismsof action remain to be defined, it is clear that pineal-parapinealorgans participate in thermoregulatory adjustments by actingupon the central nervous system.  相似文献

A collection of pontoniinid shrimps, principally from the Islands of Mahé and Praslin, in the western Indian Ocean, is described. Twenty-four species were collected, including two new species, Periclimenes difficilis and Periclimenaeus manihinei. Twenty-two species are considered to be commensals and the hosts of many are identified. The early juvenile stages of several species were collected and are described for the first time. The incidence of regeneration in the second pereiopods is studied in detail in Coralliocaris graminea. The pontoniinid shrimp fauna of the Seychelle Islands is reveiwed and its geographic distribution summarized. Two of the species reported are new records for the Indian Ocean and eight are newly added to the Seychelles fauna.  相似文献

Although finrays in salmon normally contain a pair of elements (biramous), finrays with a single element (uniramous) occasionally develop. Exposure to chronic stress during character development has been shown to increase fluctuating asymmetry, suggesting the occurrence of single finrays may be stress‐induced. On the other hand, single finrays may be evolutionary atavisms, reflecting fin vestigialization caused by reduced selection pressure. To assess the merits of these hypotheses, cleared and stained paired and median fins were examined for single finrays in juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch Walbaum) from two compatible hatchery stocks and their reciprocal hybrids which had been exposed to different patterns of chronic temperature fluctuation throughout embryogenesis. In the median fins, uniramous secondary finrays predominated, and single primary finrays were infrequent. Single finrays in the median fins did not respond to thermal treatment or cross, suggesting the fins were evolutionarily stable and under strong developmental control. The paired fins were observed to contain only primary finrays. Frequencies of single pelvic finrays increased under thermal stress, as did fluctuating asymmetry, suggesting increased sensitivity to stress due to reduced developmental control in this fin. However, the presence or absence of single finrays in the paired fins did not alter the statistical significance of the conclusions regarding levels of fluctuating asymmetry, the number of asymmetric fish, or the contribution to meristic variation from asymmetry. Locations of single finrays in the paired fins were unaffected by thermal treatment or cross. Single finrays were most commonly observed in the trailing margins of both paired fins, a finding consistent with vestigialization theory. Frequency histograms of single pectoral finray locations revealed a second peak in the leading quarter of the fin. The esults support the hypothesis that single primary finrays are evolutionary atavisms, and that reduced selection pressure is differentially influencing the paired fins.  相似文献

Insect attraction to host plants may be partly mediated by visual stimuli. In the present study, the responses of adult Hycleus apicicornis (Guér.) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) to plant models of different colours, different combinations of two colours, or three hues of blue of different shapes are compared. Single‐colour models comprised the colours sky blue, bright green, yellow, red, white and black. Sky blue (reflecting light in the 440–500 nm region) is the most attractive, followed by white, which reflects light over a broader range (400–700 nm). On landing on sky blue targets, beetles exhibit feeding behaviour immediately. When different hues of blue (of different shapes) are compared, sky blue is preferred over turquoise, followed by dark blue, indicating that H. apicicornis is more attracted to lighter hues of blue than to darker ones. No significant differences are found between the three shapes (circle, square and triangle) tested, suggesting that reflectance associated with colour could be a more important visual cue than shape for host location by H. apicicornis. The preference of H. apicicornis for sky blue can be exploited in designing an attractive trap for its management.  相似文献

The mRNAs coding for the 68,000 and 74,000 dalton serum albumins of Xenopus laevis were purified by hybridisation to their corresponding cloned cDNA and translated using the reticulocyte lysate. The primary translational product of the 68,000 dalton albumin has a molecular weight of 70,000 daltons suggesting that it is synthesised with a signal peptide which is cleaved during secretion. In contrast, the primary translational product of the 74,000 dalton albumin has a molecular weight of 72,000 daltons suggesting that it must be posttranslationally modified to account for the increased molecular weight of the mature protein. X. laevis oocytes injected with albumin mRNA secrete proteins of the same molecular weights as the mature albumins. When these translational products were chromatographed on concanavalin A Sepharose, the 74,000 dalton albumin was bound suggesting that it is glycosylated. Comparison of X. laevis and X. tropicalis albumins suggests that the 68,000 dalton albumin is similar to the primitive Xenopus albumin and that since the genome duplication which occurred in X. laevis , differences have arisen in both the length and processing of the primary translational product to account for the current difference in the molecular weights of the two X. laevis albumins.  相似文献

It is argued that the inclusion of spatially heterogeneous environments in biodiversity reserves will be an effective means of encouraging ecosystem resilience and plant community conservation under climate change. However, the resilience and resistance of plant populations to global change, the specific life‐history traits involved and the spatial scale at which environmentally driven demographic variation is expressed remains largely unknown for most plant groups. Here we address these questions by reporting an empirical investigation into the impacts of an unprecedented 3‐year drought on the demography, population growth rates (λ) and biogeographical distribution of core populations of the perennial grassland species Austrostipa aristiglumis in semiarid Australia. We use life‐history analysis and periodic matrix population models to specifically test the hypothesis that patch‐ and habitat‐scale variation in vital life‐history parameters result in spatial differences in the resilience and resistance of A. aristiglumis populations to extreme drought. We show that the development of critical soil water deficits during drought resulted in collapse of adult A. aristiglumis populations (λ?1), rapid interhabitat phytosociological change and overall contraction towards mesic refugia where populations were both more resistant and resilient to perturbation. Population models, combined with climatic niche analysis, suggest that, even in core areas, a significant reduction in size and habitat range of A. aristiglumis populations is likely under climate change expected this century. Remarkably, however, we show that even minor topographic variation (0.2–3 m) can generate significant variation in demographic parameters that confer population‐level resilience and resistance to drought. Our findings support the hypothesis that extreme climatic events have the capacity to induce rapid, landscape‐level shifts in core plant populations, but that the protection of topographically heterogeneous environments, even at small spatial scales, may play a key role in conserving biodiversity under climate change in the coming century.  相似文献

Estimates of carbon leaching losses from different land use systems are few and their contribution to the net ecosystem carbon balance is uncertain. We investigated leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and dissolved methane (CH4), at forests, grasslands, and croplands across Europe. Biogenic contributions to DIC were estimated by means of its δ13C signature. Leaching of biogenic DIC was 8.3±4.9 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 24.1±7.2 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 14.6±4.8 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. DOC leaching equalled 3.5±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 5.3±2.0 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 4.1±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. The average flux of total biogenic carbon across land use systems was 19.4±4.0 g C m?2 yr?1. Production of DOC in topsoils was positively related to their C/N ratio and DOC retention in subsoils was inversely related to the ratio of organic carbon to iron plus aluminium (hydr)oxides. Partial pressures of CO2 in soil air and soil pH determined DIC concentrations and fluxes, but soil solutions were often supersaturated with DIC relative to soil air CO2. Leaching losses of biogenic carbon (DOC plus biogenic DIC) from grasslands equalled 5–98% (median: 22%) of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) plus carbon inputs with fertilization minus carbon removal with harvest. Carbon leaching increased the net losses from cropland soils by 24–105% (median: 25%). For the majority of forest sites, leaching hardly affected actual net ecosystem carbon balances because of the small solubility of CO2 in acidic forest soil solutions and large NEE. Leaching of CH4 proved to be insignificant compared with other fluxes of carbon. Overall, our results show that leaching losses are particularly important for the carbon balance of agricultural systems.  相似文献

1. Fish and invertebrate assemblage data collected from 670 stream sites in Minnesota (U.S.A.) were used to calculate concordance across three nested spatial scales (statewide, ecoregion and catchment). Predictive taxa richness models, calibrated using the same data, were used to evaluate whether concordant communities exhibited similar trends in human‐induced taxa loss across all three scales. Finally, we evaluated the strength of the relationship between selected environmental variables and the composition of both assemblages at all three spatial scales. 2. Significant concordance between fish and invertebrate communities occurred at the statewide scale as well as in six of seven ecoregions and 17 of the 21 major catchments. However, concordance was not consistently indicative of significant relationships between rates of fish and invertebrate taxa loss at those same scales. 3. Fish and invertebrate communities were largely associated with different environmental variables, although the composition of both communities was strongly correlated with stream size across all three scales. 4. Predictive taxa‐loss models for fish assemblages were less sensitive and precise than models for invertebrate assemblages, likely because of the relatively low number of common fish taxa in our data set. Both models, however, distinguished reference from non‐reference sites. 5. The importance of concordance, geographic context and scale are discussed in relation to the design and interpretation of stream integrity indicators. In particular, our findings suggest that community concordance should not be viewed as a substitute for an evaluation of how assemblages respond to environmental stressors.  相似文献

1. The effects of transient acidity on the recruitment of Lepomis sunfish were examined in two ponds in Plymouth County, Massachusetts with on-site monitoring systems. One pond had low buffering capacity and was sensitive to acidification and acid spikes, the other had better buffering with no acid spikes. Pond pH was continuously monitored over 3 years.
2. Young-of-the-year (YOY) sunfish were collected and through otolith analysis aged in days since larval metamorphosis. Day-classes were constructed from these age data. The YOY swim-up day-class distribution was more irregular with pronounced gaps in Maquan Pond than in the better-buffered Furnace Pond.
3. The poorly buffered pond, Maquan, experienced irregular acid spikes, defined as a sudden lowering of pond pH from about 6.6 to below 5.3 for an hour or more. These spikes were associated with rainfall ( P < 0.005). Acid spikes were not found at Furnace Pond.
4. The occurrence of acid spikes and diminished day-classes from expected swim-up values were significantly associated, based on pooled data from 3 years at Maquan Pond.
5. Transient acid spikes at Maquan Pond appear to harm Lepomis YOY at the vulnerable stage of metamorphosis, when their gills become fully functional and exposed to the environment.
6. Growth rates of Lepomis YOY were also studied. Length–age and weight–length growth relationships were examined for differences in instantaneous growth coefficients between years and between ponds. Length–age instantaneous growth coefficients ranged from 0.0114 to 0.0176 over five pond-years. The slowest growth rates were in a warm, dry spawning season with the earliest average metamorphosis date.  相似文献
