The lower Rabbitkettle Formation of northwestern Canada is a monofacial Upper Cambrian unit of variably calcareous, argillaceous siltstone and fine-grained sandstone with rare bioclastic grainstone, deposited on a gentle slope below fair-weather wave base with no discernible fluctuation in water depth. The trilobite fauna is a mixture of pandemic agnostoids and Laurentian polymeroids, including protaspides and meraspides, and individuals are disarticulated, non-abraded and mostly oriented convex-upward. Bioclasts are interpreted as in situ elements affected only by weak bottom currents and storm-induced turbulence. A major proportion of the larger (≥5 mm across) polymeroid cranidia and pygidia in the lower part (Marjuman) of the formation are broken; large thoracic segments are often broken at the axial furrow and some broken free cheeks occur, but essentially no broken agnostoids or hypostomes were observed. Trilobites are not broken in upper beds (Steptoean), above the base of the Glyptagnostus retculatus Zone. Physical breakage cannot be dismissed entirely, but most damage is interpreted to be due to size-selective predation, possibly through lethal blows similar to those delivered by some extant stomatopod crustaceans. A possible culprit may be an animal akin to Yohoia , known from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale. The distribution of attacked trilobites serves as a proxy for the presence and disappearance of soft-bodied carnivores. In the Rabbitkettle Formation, it suggests that Burgess Shale-type animals may have persisted into the Late Cambrian but suffered extinction at the Marjuman-Steptoean 'biomere' event when most trilobite species vanished.  相似文献

Feeding habits of freshwater protozoa were used to group species into functional, trophic groups. Community structure in differing ecosystems was examined in relation to the number of species occurring in the functional group categories. Six wetland ecosystems and a large river ecosystem were studied. Changes in community structure during the colonization of artificial substrates were also examined. Changes during colonization were studied in a mesotrophic lake, in low-order streams, and in laboratory microecosystems. In the latter case, the response of colonizing communities to a heavy metal toxicant was studied. All communities studied were dominated by bactivorous-detritivorous species and, to a lesser extent, by photosynthetic species. The chief functional role of substrate-associated protozoans appears to be the processing of dead organic matter and its associated bacterial flora. Functional groups utilizing resources other than detrital or mineral nutrients (saprotrophs, algivores, omnivores, and predators) were always minor community components. Colonizing communities were often dominated by photosynthetic species during early colonization stages but were again dominated by bactivorous-detritivorous species at species equilibrium. Low levels of toxicant (Cd) reduced numbers of both photosynthetic and bactivorous-detritivorous species. Higher toxicant levels virtually eliminated photosynthetic species and reduced bacterial detritivores by over one-half. Roles of protozoan species in ecosystems are closely tied to the processing of detritus and the recycling of mineral nutrients. Enumeration of individuals in functional categories is proposed as a simplified method for studying the abundance and activity of protozoa in ecosystems. Examination of changes in functional group composition and the relationship of functional group abundances to rates of carbon processing are suggested for studies of the importance of protozoa to the flow of energy and materials in ecosystems.  相似文献

1. Lampricides are commonly used to control invasive sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) in tributaries around the Great Lakes (U.S.A.) by targeting their larvae (ammocoetes). As lampricides have sublethal effects on unionids, this study investigated unionid and ammocoete distribution and habitat use to aid in refining lampricide applications. 2. Habitat and unionid surveys were conducted in the Paw Paw River, in south‐west Michigan (U.S.A.). Unionids were predominately present in the upper main stem, while the probability of ammocoete presence was highest in the tributaries and lower main stem. 3. Generalised linear models revealed median particle size and gradient to be effective predictors of unionid distributions, while distance to sea lamprey spawning habitat and bank stability were effective predictors of ammocoete distributions. 4. Minimal overlap of unionid and ammocoete distributions suggests that refinement of lampricide treatment in the Paw Paw River is possible. We propose redefining the extent of the treatment unit so that only areas with a high probability of ammocoete presence and a low probability of unionid presence are treated with lampricide. This could result in reducing treatment costs and minimising threats to unionid conservation, while not jeopardising the success of lampricide treatment programmes.  相似文献
