1. This paper introduces a new approach for setting streamflow-based river ecosystem management targets and this method is called the 'Range of Variability Approach' (RVA). The proposed approach derives from aquatic ecology theory concerning the critical role of hydrological variability, and associated characteristics of timing, frequency, duration, and rates of change, in sustaining aquatic ecosystems. The method is intended for application on rivers wherein the conservation of native aquatic biodiversity and protection of natural ecosystem functions are primary river management objectives.
2. The RVA uses as its starting point either measured or synthesized daily streamflow values from a period during which human perturbations to the hydrological regime were negligible. This streamflow record is then characterized using thirty-two different hydrological parameters, using methods defined in Richter et al . (1996). Using the RVA, a range of variation in each of the thirty-two parameters, e.g. the values at ± 1 standard deviation from the mean or the twenty-fifth to seventy-fifth percentile range, are selected as initial flow management targets.
3. The RVA targets are intended to guide the design of river management strategies (e.g. reservoir operations rules, catchment restoration) that will lead to attainment of these targets on an annual basis. The RVA will enable river managers to define and adopt readily interim management targets before conclusive, long-term ecosystem research results are available. The RVA targets and management strategies should be adaptively refined as suggested by research results and as needed to sustain native aquatic ecosystem biodiversity and integrity.  相似文献

We used comprehensive data on butterfly distributions from six mountain ranges in the Great Basin to explore three connected biogeographic issues. First, we examined species richness and occurrence patterns both within and among mountain ranges. Only one range had a significant relationship between species richness and area. Relationships between species richness and elevation varied among mountain ranges. Species richness decreased as elevation increased in one range, increased as elevation increased in three ranges, and was not correlated in two ranges. In each range, distributional patterns were nested, but less vagile species did not always exhibit greater nestedness. Second, we compared our work with similar studies of montane mammals. Results from both taxonomic groups suggest that it may be appropriate to modify existing general paradigms of the biogeography of montane faunas in the Great Basin. Third, we revisited and refined previous predictions of how butterfly assemblages in the Great Basin may respond to climate change. The effects of climate change on species richness of montane butterflies may vary considerably among mountain ranges. In several ranges, few if any species apparently would be lost. Neither local species composition nor the potential order of species extirpations appears to be generalizable among ranges.  相似文献

Microbial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) is widespread in anaerobic sediments and is a key producer of aqueous Fe(II) in suboxic sediments that contain reactive ferric oxides. Previous studies have shown that DIR produces some of the largest natural fractionations of stable Fe isotopes, although the mechanism of this isotopic fractionation is not yet well understood. Here we compare Fe isotope fractionations produced by similar cultures of Geobacter sulfurreducens strain PCA and Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32 during reduction of hematite and goethite. Both species produce aqueous Fe(II) that is depleted in the heavy Fe isotopes, as expressed by a decrease in 56Fe/54Fe ratios or δ56Fe values. The low δ56Fe values for aqueous Fe(II) produced by DIR reflect isotopic exchange among three Fe inventories: aqueous Fe(II) (Fe(II)aq), sorbed Fe(II) (Fe(II)sorb), and a reactive Fe(III) component on the ferric oxide surface (Fe(III)reac). The fractionation in 56Fe/54Fe ratios between Fe(II)aq and Fe(III)reac was –2.95‰, and this remained constant over the timescales of the experiments (280 d). The Fe(II)aq – Fe(III)reac fractionation was independent of the ferric Fe substrate (hematite or goethite) and bacterial species, indicating a common mechanism for Fe isotope fractionation during DIR. Moreover, the Fe(II)aq – Fe(III)reac fractionation in 56Fe/54Fe ratios during DIR is identical within error of the equilibrium Fe(II)aq – ferric oxide fractionation in abiological systems at room temperatures. This suggests that the role of bacteria in producing Fe isotope fractionations during DIR lies in catalyzing coupled atom and electron exchange between Fe(II)aq and Fe(III)reac so that equilibrium Fe isotope partitioning occurs. Although Fe isotope fractionation between Fe(II)aq and Fe(III)reac remained constant, the absolute δ56Fe values for Fe(II)aq varied as a function of the relative proportions of Fe(II)aq, Fe(II)sorb, and Fe(III)reac during reduction. The temporal variations in these proportions were unique to hematite or goethite but independent of bacterial species. In the case of hematite reduction, the small measured Fe(II)aq – Fe(II)sorb fractionation of −0.30‰ in 56Fe/54Fe ratios, combined with the small proportion of Fe(II)sorb, produced insignificant (<0.05‰) isotopic effects due to sorption of Fe(II). Sorption of Fe(II) produced small, but significant effects during reduction of goethite, reflecting the higher proportion of Fe(II)sorb and larger measured Fe(II)aq – Fe(II)sorb fractionation of –0.87‰ in 56Fe/54Fe ratios for goethite. The isotopic effects of sorption on the δ56Fe values for Fe(II)aq were largest during the initial stages of reduction when Fe(II)sorb was the major ferrous Fe species during goethite reduction, on the order of 0.3 to 0.4‰. With continued reduction, however, the isotopic effects of sorption decreased to <0.2‰. These results provide insight into the mechanisms that produce Fe isotope fractionation during DIR, and form the basis for interpretation of Fe isotope variations in modern and ancient natural systems where DIR may have driven Fe cycling.  相似文献

1. The effects of spawning coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) on the limnephilid caddisfly Ecclisomyia conspersa were evaluated by experimentally excluding salmon from the upper 14‐m stretch of a spawning channel by a wire‐meshed fence. Density, and development and growth rates, of larvae upstream of the fence (without salmon) were compared with those downstream (with salmon). 2. Larval density in the stretch with salmon declined during spawning, but increased again after spawning subsided and the carcasses of dead fish became available. In the stretch with salmon, larval density on salmon carcasses was seven to 37 times greater than on the adjacent channel substratum. The rate of larval development in the stretch with salmon was greater than that in the stretch without salmon. Two months after carcasses became available, 98% of larvae sampled from the stretch with salmon were in the fifth instar, compared to only 23% from the stretch without salmon. Body weight of E. conspersa in the stretches with and without salmon increased by an average of 3.04 and 2.38 mg, respectively, over a 6‐month period. 3. 15N values of larvae from the stretch with salmon increased following the arrival of the fish, suggesting that the larvae were feeding on salmon‐derived material, such as eggs and carcasses, which contain a high proportion of the heavier stable isotope. In contrast, 15N values of larvae from the stretch without salmon remained relatively constant throughout the experiment. The availability of salmon carcasses as a high‐quality food source late in larval development may increase survival and fecundity of E. conspersa. 4. These substantial differences were consistent with the view that they were due to the experimental exclusion of salmon and salmon carcasses from the upstream stretch, though the study was un‐replicated and thus precludes ascribing causation more definitely.  相似文献

The Common Chuckwalla [ Sauromalus ater (=  obesus )] is a large, sexually dimorphic lizard with a flattened head that takes refuge from predators in rock crevices. Males use their relatively large heads to bite competing males during territorial fights and to restrain females during copulation. Flattened heads with an antipredator function (i.e. seeking refuge in crevices) and enlarged heads with intrasexual competition and reproductive functions suggest possible antagonism between selective pressures on head morphology in males. To examine this hypothesis, we performed a morphometric analysis and measured the bite-force performance of 49 adult chuckwallas. Males had disproportionately wider heads than females, but did not have deeper heads. Males bit with nearly four times the force of females, consistent with the notion of sexual selection for high bite force in males. Although constrained by crevice-wedging behaviour, head depth was a good predictor of bite force in both sexes. In males, however, osteological head width also was a good predictor of bite force. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that head shape in males is under antagonistic selective pressures, which may partly explain the pattern of head shape dimorphism. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies of the terrestrial snail genus Albinaria have caused a radical reassessment of its taxonomy. These studies, however, were limited to western species. This paper examines mitochondrial 12S sequences and nuclear ITS1 & 2 sequences of both eastern and western species, and demonstrates that Albinaria, in its most recent definition, is not monophyletic. Both molecular datasets place ' Albinaria ' hedenborgi from Lebanon in a well-supported clade with species of the genus Cristataria , distributed south-east of the vicariant range of Albinaria . The remaining species from Cyprus, Turkey and Greece constitute a well-supported monophyletic group. These two clades form geographical clusters, whereas Albinaria in the current definition (including ' A. '  hedenborgi ) has a disjunct distribution. ' A.' hedenborgi should therefore be classified with Cristataria , together with the morphologically similar and geographically close ' A. Ocean temperatures in most parts of the world are increasing and are expected to continue to rise during the 21st century. A major challenge to ecologists and marine resource managers is to understand and predict how these global changes will affect species and ecosystems at local scales where temperature more directly affects biological responses and species interactions. Here, we investigate historical variability in regional sea surface temperature in two large heavily exploited marine ecosystems and compare these variations with expected rates of temperature change for the 21st century. We use four of the world's longest calibrated daily time series to show that trends in surface temperatures in the North and Baltic Seas now exceed those at any time since instrumented measurements began in 1861 and 1880. Temperatures in summer since 1985 have increased at nearly triple the global warming rate, which is expected to occur during the 21st century and summer temperatures have risen two to five times faster than those in other seasons. These warm temperatures and rates of change are due partly to an increase in the frequency of extremely warm years. The recent warming event is exceeding the ability of local species to adapt and is consequently leading to major changes in the structure, function and services of these ecosystems.  相似文献

Three high-resolution climatic reconstructions, based on diatom analyses from lake sediment cores from the Canadian prairies, show that shifts in drought conditions have prevailed on centennial to millennial time scales for at least the past six millennia. These shifts in mean aridity exhibit broad regional synchrony, with particularly pronounced shifts at all sites between ∼1700–2000 cal. yr bp and ∼3600–3900 cal. yr bp , as well as at ∼5400–5500 cal. yr bp for the two sites which extend back to at least 6000 cal. yr bp . The two Saskatchewan lakes exhibited significant coherence in both the timing and direction of these shifts, whereas inferred changes at the westernmost site in Alberta were significantly correlated to the Saskatchewan sites, but opposite in sign, and exhibited more high-frequency variation on the scale of centuries. The mechanisms behind these abrupt shifts in aridity are poorly understood, but may be linked to changes in oceanic–atmospheric interactions that influence the mean position of the jetstream and the associated storm tracks. Natural shifts in mean climatic conditions may accelerate with increasing carbon dioxide levels intensifying the likelihood of extreme droughts in North American prairies.  相似文献

Antigens prepared from Trichomonas gallinae, Histomonas meleagridis, Dientamoeba fragilis, Entamoeba invodens and Entamoeba histolytica were separated by electrophoresis in agar gels and reacted with antisera prepared in rabbits against each of the 5 species. The most numerous and strongest precipitin lines were obtained from reactions between the homologous antigens and antisera. Direct and cross-absorption reaction methods were employed with each antiserum and the various antigens to ascertain quantitatively the immunologic relationships among the several organisms. Trichomonas shared many common antigens with Histomonas, fewer with Dientamoeba and none with either species of Entamoeba. Histomonas was more closely related antigenically to Dientamoeba than to Trichomonas. The histomonad had only a few weakly cross-reacting antigens in common with the 2 Entamoeba species. Dientamoeba shared the most common antigens with Histomonas, fewer with Trichomonas and the fewest with Entamoeba. Somewhat stronger cross-reactivity was obtained with anti-Dientamoeba serum and E. invadens than between this immune serum and E. histolytica. The 2 species of Entamoeba shared the largest number of common antigens with each other, and to a much lesser extent both species cross reacted with Dientamoeba. Anti-Entamoeba sera had only a few weak cross-reacting precipitins with Histomonas. No antigenic relationship was found between either species of Entamoeba and Trichomonas.  相似文献
