Ecologic stability of the dysaerobic biofacies during the Late Paleozoic   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Late Paleozoic faunas found in sediments of dysaerobic origin represent a unique community type that remained essentially unchanged from the Middle Devonian to the Early Permian. This dysaerobic community had the following unique characteristics: (1) dominance by vagile molluscs, with suspension-feeding brachiopods, bryozoans, corals and echinoderms usually subordinate; (2) a trophic structure dominated by deposit feeders and carnivorous or scavenging cephalopods; (3) small body size as the result of high juvenile mortality and possibly stunting; and (4) preservation of most individuals as pyritic stein-kerns. All these characteristics are directly linked to the low oxygen levels of the dysaerobic environment. The relative stability of the deeper water, dysaerobic environment is consistent with Sanders' Stability-Time Hypothesis. The dysaerobic environment apparently offered a refuge for more archaic biotas that evolved in nearshore environments of the early Paleozoic.  相似文献

Abstract Riparian habitats are highly important ecosystems for tropical biodiversity, and highly threatened ecosystems through changing disturbance regimes and weed invasion. An experimental study was conducted to assess the ecosystem impacts of fire regimes introduced for the removal of the exotic woody vine, Cryptostegia grandiflora, in tropical north‐eastern Australian woodlands. Experimental sites in subcatchments of the Burdekin River, northern Queensland, Australia, were subjected to combinations of early wet‐season and dry‐season fires, and single and repeated fires, with an unburnt control. Woody vegetation was sampled using permanent quadrats to record and monitor plants species, number and size‐class. Sampling was conducted pre‐fire in 1999 and post‐fire in 2002. All fire regimes were effective in reducing the number and biomass of C. grandiflora shrubs and vines. Few woodland or riparian species were found to be fire‐sensitive and community composition did not change markedly under any fire regime. The more intense dry‐season fires impacted the structure of non‐target vegetation, with large reductions in the number of sapling trees (<5 cm d.b.h.) and reductions in the largest tree size‐class and total tree basal area. Unexpectedly, medium‐sized canopy trees (10–30 cm d.b.h.) appear to have been significantly benefited by fires, with decreases in number of trees of this size‐class in the absence of fire. Although the presence of C. grandiflora as a vine in riparian forest canopies changed the nature and intensity of crown combustion patterns, this did not lead to the initiation of a self‐perpetuating weed–fire cycle, as invaders were unable to take advantage of gaps caused by fire. Low intensity, early wet‐season burning, or early dry‐season burning, is recommended for control of C. grandiflora in order to minimize the fire intensity and risk of the loss of large habitat trees in riparian habitats.  相似文献

Microborings of endolithic organisms (e.g. algae, fungi) provide valuable indicators of paleoenvironments. The present study documents the distribution of microborings in fossil skeletal substrates from a spectrum of shelf to basinal facies in the Middle Devonian of New York. Endolithic boring in brachiopod shells and corals were prepared using special embedding-casting method and were examined and photographed with SEM. About 13 distinct types of microborings were discovered, presumably produced by microorganisms (pro- and eukaryotic), sponges, bryozoans and worms. Brachiopod holdfast etchings are reported for the first time from Paleozoic rocks. Microborings are non-randomly distributed among Middle Devonian facies. The highest diversity and abundance of borings occurs in diverse brachiopod and coral-bearing calcareous mudstones; which appear to represent shallow, well-aerated and low turbidity environments. Microboring diversity and frequency decreases markedly into mudstones and siltstones recording higher turbidity as well as into dark gray to black basinal shale facies. 'Leiorhynchus' brachiopods from probable deeper water, dysaerobic environments display very low diversity of micro-boring assemblages. They include brachiopod pedicle borings and one endolith which shows similarities to a modem cyanobacterium. If the latter is correctly identified, it brackets all of the studied facies within the photic zone.  相似文献

The differentiation of chromoplasts and amyloplasts has beenfollowed in developing petals of Ranunculus acris, R. ficariaand R. repens from small bud stages through anthesis. Theseare typical of Ranunculus species with glossy yellow petals.The plastids in the adaxial epidermis of the glossy part developmany globules which enlarge and coalesce with the eventual completebreakdown of plastid structure. At anthesis only a few cytoplasmicremnants remain in the dispersed pigment in these cells whichpartially collapse with folding of the anticlinal walls. Inthe non-glossy proximal part of the petal the adaxial epidermalcells have more convex outer walls and the chromoplast developmentdoes not progress beyond a stage found in the glossy regionjust before the petal tips emerge from the bud: they have largeperipheral globules with irregular tubular lamellae betweenthem and in the central stroma. In the abaxial epidermis theplastids produce small globules and retain some grana; somehave small starch grains and differ little from the plastidsin the mesophyll. The starch layer beneath the adaxial epidermisin the glossy region is formed from a single embryonic celllayer. Amyloplasts differentiate rapidly in these cells andall plastid structure has disappeared before the flower budopens leaving the sloping palisade cells packed with starchgrains. ABSTRACT Long-term population declines and habitat reductions have increased concern over the status of the lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus). Robust estimates of demographic parameters are essential for identifying population declines and planning effective management. We evaluated the effects of age and season on the survival of female lesser prairie-chickens at 2 sites in southwestern Kansas, USA. Using telemetry data from a 7-year field study (from 1997 to 2003), we estimated seasonal (Apr—Sep) and annual (Apr—Mar) survival. We also examined daily survival rates of females attending nests during the 26-day incubation period and young during the 14-day early brood-rearing period. We evaluated the probable mortality causes of radiomarked birds by examining evidence at recovery sites. We captured 227 female lesser prairie-chickens (87 yearlings, 117 ad, and 23 age undetermined) and fitted them with radiotransmitters. Estimates of 12-month survival were lower among yearlings (Ŝ12 = 0.429, SE = 0.117) and adults at site I (Ŝ12 > = 0.302, SE = 0.080) than among yearlings (Ŝ12 = 0.588, SE = 0.100) and adults at site II (Ŝ12 > = 0.438, SE = 0.083). The patterns in timing of mortality and age-specific 6-month survival were consistent with those of 12-month estimates at site I from 1998 to 2002, with a peak in mortality during May and June. Females tending to nests or to prefledged chicks had lower daily survival (DŜRtend = 0.993, SE = 0.001) than females not involved in these activities (DŜRfailedbreeder = 0.997, SE = 0.002). We recorded 92 mortalities from April 1997 to March 2003, and 59% and 11% were attributed to predation by mammals and raptors, respectively. Our research suggests that predation during the nesting season can have a major impact on lesser prairie-chicken demography, and conservation efforts should focus on enhancing female survival during the nesting and brood-rearing seasons.  相似文献
