Distribution and population density of badgers Meles meles in Luxembourg   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. The distribution and density of Eurasian badgers Meles meles in Luxembourg was estimated by gathering information about the location of badger setts with a questionnaire survey, by visiting 708 setts in order to classify them as ‘main setts’ or ‘outliers’, and by estimating social group size by directly counting emerging badgers. 2. Badgers were found to be widely distributed in Luxembourg, with a minimum main sett density of 0.17 setts/km2. Setts were sited preferentially in forest habitat. The mean minimum group size was 4.6 badgers. 3. The Luxembourg badger population was conservatively estimated to contain at least 2010 adult and young badgers (95% CI 1674–2347) in spring 2002, equivalent to a density of 0.78 adult and young badgers/km2 (95% CI 0.65–0.91). This is moderate compared to most of continental Europe.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Studies on the relation of temperature to tolerance,preference, metabolic rate, performance, circulation, and growthof sockeye salmon all point to a physiological optimum in theregion of 15°C. Natural occurrence is limited in time andspace at temperatures above 18°C despite being able to tolerate24°C. Forms of physiological inadequacy can be demonstratedwhich account for such restrictions in distribution. Predictivepower for locating and accounting for concentrations of youngfish in thermally stratified lakes appeared to provide "proof"for the controlling influence of the physiological optimum temperature.Early literature on the ecology of sockeye supported this view.Recent studies using midwater trawls and sonar detection reveala diurnal behavior pattern which points to a more subtle interactionof biotic andabiotic factors governing vertical distributionin which the controlling force appears to be bioenergetic efficiency.It is concluded that a mechanism of behavioral thermoregulationhas evolved which favorably balances daily metabolic expendituresin order to conserve energy when food is limited.  相似文献

Circular-parabolic pits occur commonly on the endoskeletal remains of certain Paleozoic crinoids. Detailed study of several hundred specimens, representing about 30 pelmatozoan species from the Upper Silurian Rochester Shale of New York and Ontario, reveals that such pits occur exclusively in seven species of crinoids. Furthermore, there are consistent differences in the morphology and orientation of holes occurring on the different crinoid species. This suggests that distinct epizoan species settled selectively on given hosts. The relationship between the hole-producing epizoans and crinoid hosts is inferred to have been a form of dependent commensalism. Preliminary surveys of other Paleozoic crinoid assemblages reveal similar host-selectivity by pit-producing epizoans. Crinoidepizoan pairs apparently co-evolved through considerable spans of geologic time as related genera and species of different ages, from Silurian to Pennsylvanian, exhibit similar pits.  相似文献

1. Two cossid moths, Coryphodema tristis Drury and Chilecomadia valdiviana Philippi, have recently become pests on Eucalyptus nitens H. Deane & Maiden in South Africa and Chile, respectively. Both C. tristis and C. valdiviana have large host ranges and high levels of similarity in their host distributions. Their infestations of E. nitens are the first records of these moths on Myrtaceae. 2. The contemporaneous adoption of E. nitens as a novel host, despite widespread availability of native and introduced Myrtaceae, suggests a non‐random pattern of invasion. Phylogenetic relatedness among the two species linked to cryptic invasion of one or both moths at some time in the recent past provides a possible explanation for this pattern. 3. To test this hypothesis, variation in mtDNA sequences for the COI gene of C. tristis and C. valdiviana were analyzed. The COI mtDNA sequence data showed that C. tristis and C. valdiviana are highly divergent genetically, indicating that both are native on their respective continents with independent evolutionary trajectories. 4. The parallel host range expansions to E. nitens on different continents appear to be unrelated events, likely driven by characteristics of the biology and/or ecology of the host.  相似文献

Absolute depths of Silurian benthic assemblages   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A variety of evidence can be used to estimate the absolute depth of the well-established depth gradient of Silurian onshore-to-offshore benthic assemblages (BA 1–5); this evidence is reviewed herein. There is a fair degree of consistency between fossil benthic assemblages and the occurrence of certain primary sedimentary structures, particularly those involved in storm deposition. A second, probably stronger, line of evidence for absolute depth of Silurian benthic assemblages involves the distribution of fossils of light-sensitive organisms and of reefs. Among these, the most important are the calcified dasycladacean algae, to which the cyclocrinitids of the Middle Ordovician - Early Silurian may belong. The modem dasycladaceans have a narrowly restricted bathymetric range. Maximum depth for modern calcified dasycladaceans is about 90 m, but the vast majority occur at 30 m or less. Some Silurian occurrences of these algae are abundant, particularly in BA 3 and 4; rarely, small specimens of cyclocrinitids and receptaculitids are found in the lower, outer portions of BA 4 and even into 5. This evidence constrains much of the spectrum (BA 1–5) of Silurian fossil communities to a rather narrow depth range, within the photic zone. Based on taxonomic uniformitarianism, we would place the depth of Silurian BA 1 through 4 between 0 and about 40–60 m. The common coincidence of the lower end of storm wave base and the lower end of the photic zone near the BA 4–5 boundary also suggests that this position may represent water depths on the order of 50 m. Several other lines of evidence -including algal borings, widths of facies belts, separation of communities by basalt flows whose thicknesses are known - also support a relatively shallow depth range for BA 14. The absence of storm-disturbed beds over large parts of several major platforms below about the BA 3–4 boundary region suggests that major storms of the Silurian may have been far weaker than those of the present, possibly owing to a different climatic regime. □Absolute depth, Silurian, photic zone, calcareous algae, Benthic Assemblage, storms.  相似文献
