ABSTRACT Legal removal of migratory birds from the wild occurs for several reasons, including subsistence, sport harvest, damage control, and the pet trade. We argue that harvest theory provides the basis for assessing the impact of authorized take, advance a simplified rendering of harvest theory known as potential biological removal as a useful starting point for assessing take, and demonstrate this approach with a case study of depredation control of black vultures (Coragyps atratus) in Virginia, USA. Based on data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and other sources, we estimated that the black vulture population in Virginia was 91,190 (95% credible interval = 44,520-212,100) in 2006. Using a simple population model and available estimates of life-history parameters, we estimated the intrinsic rate of growth (rmax) to be in the range 7–14%, with 10.6% a plausible point estimate. For a take program to seek an equilibrium population size on the conservative side of the yield curve, the rate of take needs to be less than that which achieves a maximum sustained yield (0.5 × rmax). Based on the point estimate for rmax and using the lower 60% credible interval for population size to account for uncertainty, these conditions would be met if the take of black vultures in Virginia in 2006 was <3,533 birds. Based on regular monitoring data, allowable harvest should be adjusted annually to reflect changes in population size. To initiate discussion about how this assessment framework could be related to the laws and regulations that govern authorization of such take, we suggest that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act requires only that take of native migratory birds be sustainable in the long-term, that is, sustained harvest rate should be <rmax. Further, the ratio of desired harvest rate to 0.5 X rmax may be a useful metric for ascertaining the applicability of specific requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A study of the diet of E. octoculata (L) and H. stagnalis (L) using a serological technique was carried out in a lot ic habitat subject to organic pollution and seasonal sewage fungus growth.
2. The results indicate that E. octoculata consumed predominantly Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, while H. stagttalis had a less pronounced prey preference, consuming rather similar proportions of chironomids, oligochaetes, Asellus and gastropod snails.
3. At enriched sites, E. ocioculata consumed relatively more chironomids and fewer oligochaetes, while H. stagnalis took more gastropods and fewer chironomids.
4. Seasonal differences were noted in the diet of both leeches with chironomids predominating chiefly from April to August, and molluscs, oligochaetes and Asellus at other times of the year. Intra-specific differences (on a weight-age basis) were only seen for E. octoculata , small forms consuming chiefly oligochaetes and larger ones concentrating on chironomids.  相似文献

Previous efforts to uncover the genetic underpinnings of ongoing ecological speciation of the M and S forms of the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae revealed two centromere‐proximal islands of genetic divergence on X and chromosome 2. Under the assumption of considerable ongoing gene flow between M and S, these persistently divergent genomic islands were widely considered to be ‘speciation islands’. In the course of microarray‐based divergence mapping, we discovered a third centromere‐associated island of divergence on chromosome 3, which was validated by targeted re‐sequencing. To test for genetic association between the divergence islands on all three chromosomes, SNP‐based assays were applied in four natural populations of M and S spanning West, Central and East Africa. Genotyping of 517 female M and S mosquitoes revealed nearly complete linkage disequilibrium between the centromeres of the three independently assorting chromosomes. These results suggest that despite the potential for inter‐form gene flow through hybridization, actual (realized) gene flow between M and S may be substantially less than commonly assumed and may not explain most shared variation. Moreover, the possibility of very low gene flow calls into question whether diverged pericentromeric regions—characterized by reduced levels of variation and recombination—are in fact instrumental rather than merely incidental to the speciation process.  相似文献

The extent to which Spartina alterniflora Loisel. excluded,secreted or accumulated the major seawater ions (Cl-, SO2-4,Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) was investigated under varying salinitytreatments. From a quantitative viewpoint, ion exclusion wasmost prominent and accounted for 91–97% of the theoreticalmaximum ion uptake as a result of transpiration and growth.Of those ions taken up, approximately half was secreted fromthe shoots. Relative to K+, a disproportionate amount of Na+was excluded at the roots and secreted by the shoots. The concentrationwithin the tissues of S. alterniflora did not change with salinitytreatment for the majority of the ions examined, but Na+ wasmore than twice as concentrated at 40 g dm-3 than at lOgdm-3.Calculations of the flux of ions from salt marsh sediments tothe flood water via shoot secretion or stem/leaf turnover indicatethat these processes may be important to the ecology of S. alternifloraas mechanisms that limit the accumulation of salt within theroot zone.  相似文献
