Increased canopy leaf area (L) may lead to higher forest productivity and alter processes such as species dynamics and ecosystem mass and energy fluxes. Few CO2 enrichment studies have been conducted in closed canopy forests and none have shown a sustained enhancement of L. We reconstructed 8 years (1996–2003) of L at Duke's Free Air CO2 Enrichment experiment to determine the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on L before and after canopy closure in a pine forest with a hardwood component, focusing on interactions with temporal variation in water availability and spatial variation in nitrogen (N) supply. The dynamics of L were reconstructed using data on leaf litterfall mass and specific leaf area for hardwoods, and needle litterfall mass and specific leaf area combined with needle elongation rates, and fascicle and shoot counts for pines. The dynamics of pine L production and senescence were unaffected by elevated [CO2], although L senescence for hardwoods was slowed. Elevated [CO2] enhanced pine L and the total canopy L (combined pine and hardwood species; P<0.050); on average, enhancement following canopy closure was ~16% and 14% respectively. However, variation in pine L and its response to elevated [CO2] was not random. Each year pine L under ambient and elevated [CO2] was spatially correlated to the variability in site nitrogen availability (e.g. r2=0.94 and 0.87 in 2001, when L was highest before declining due to droughts and storms), with the [CO2]‐induced enhancement increasing with N (P=0.061). Incorporating data on N beyond the range of native fertility, achieved through N fertilization, indicated that pine L had reached the site maximum under elevated [CO2] where native N was highest. Thus closed canopy pine forests may be able to increase leaf area under elevated [CO2] in moderate fertility sites, but are unable to respond to [CO2] in both infertile sites (insufficient resources) and sites having high levels of fertility (maximum utilization of resources). The total canopy L, representing the combined L of pine and hardwood species, was constant across the N gradient under both ambient and elevated [CO2], generating a constant enhancement of canopy L. Thus, in mixed species stands, L of canopy hardwoods which developed on lower fertility sites (~3 g N inputs m?2 yr?1) may be sufficiently enhanced under elevated [CO2] to compensate for the lack of response in pine L, and generate an appreciable response of total canopy L (~14%).  相似文献

Fires produce land cover changes that have consequences for surface energy balance and temperature. Three eddy covariance towers were setup along a burn severity gradient (i.e. Severely, Moderately, and Unburned tundra) to determine the effect of fire and burn severity on arctic tundra surface energy exchange and temperature for three growing seasons (2008–2010) following the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire. The three sites were well matched before the fire, experienced similar weather, and had similar energy budget closure, indicating that the measured energy exchange differences between sites were largely attributable to burn severity. Increased burn severity resulted in decreased vegetation and moss cover, organic layer depth, and the rate of postfire vegetation recovery. Albedo and surface greenness steadily recovered with Moderately matching Unburned tundra by the third growing season. Decreased albedo increased net radiation and partly fueled increased latent and ground heat fluxes, soil temperatures, and thaw depth. Decreases in moss cover and the organic layer also influenced the ground thermal regime and increased latent heat fluxes. These changes either offset or decreased the surface warming effect from decreased albedo, resulting in a small surface warming in Severely and a small surface cooling in Moderately relative to Unburned tundra. These results indicate that fires have a significant impact on surface energy balance and highlight the importance of moss and permafrost thaw in regulating arctic surface energy exchange and temperature.  相似文献

Discriminant analysis was used to analyse the results of 348 bird-feeding trials conducted from 1982 to 1985 in Leverett, Massachusetts. Four size classes, seven appearance categories, and five larval host types, based on 163 species of moths and butterflies used as prey in two or more trials, were selected as predictor variables to discriminate between prey taken and not taken by birds. Discriminant analysis of individual feeding trials correctly classified 97.5 percent of prey taken or not-taken and ranked the predictor variables according to their relative importance in determining prey acceptability. Characteristics most acceptable to birds were: (1) large size, (2) bark-like appearance, (3) warning colouration, (4) woody generalist, (5) dead-leaf-like appearance, (6) woody specialist, and (7) medium size. Characteristics least acceptable to birds were: (1) small size, (2) mimetic appearance, (3) butterfly appearance, (4) herbaceous specialist food type, (5) black-and-white appearance, (6) extra large size, and (7) overall generalist feeder. A summary of the analyses includes a discriminant function based on lepidopteran characteristics that can be used to predict the prey acceptability of species not used in this study. A multiple regression analysis of prey taken revealed that size alone and larval host type combined with other prey characteristics were the most important variables in determining the selection of prey regardless of their abundance in the trials.  相似文献

A prominent response of temperate aquatic ecosystems to climate warming is changes in phenology – advancements or delays in annually reoccurring events in an organism's life cycle. The exact seasonal timing of warming, in conjunction with species-specific life-history events such as emergence from resting stages, timing of spawning, generation times, or stage-specific prey requirements, may determine the nature of a species' response. We demonstrate that recent climate-induced shifts in the phenology of lake phytoplankton and zooplankton species in a temperate eutrophic lake (Müggelsee, Germany) differed according to differences in their characteristic life cycles. Fast-growing plankton in spring (diatoms, Daphnia ) showed significant and synchronous forward movements by about 1 month, induced by concurrent earlier ice break-up dates (diatoms) and higher spring water temperature ( Daphnia ). No such synchrony was observed for slow-growing summer zooplankton species with longer and more complex life cycles (copepods, larvae of the mussel Dreissena polymorpha ). Although coexisting, the summer plankton responded species specifically to seasonal warming trends, depending on whether the timing of warming matched their individual thermal requirements at decisive developmental stages such as emergence from diapause (copepods), or spawning ( Dreissena ). Others did not change their phenology significantly, but nevertheless, increased in abundances. We show that the detailed seasonal pattern of warming influences the response of phyto- and zooplankton species to climate change, and point to the diverse nature of responses for species exhibiting complex life-history traits.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Parasitization of Trichoplusia ni (Huebner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by Chelonus sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an egg-larval parasitoid, leads to precocious cocoon spinning of the host in the fourth (penultimate) stadium followed by parasitoid emergence from the prepupa. We have investigated the mechanism by which Chelonus sp. disrupts host development. The developing larva and fluids injected by the adult female separately from the egg, are not the source of these effects, but it remains a possibility that the teratocytes, originating from the trophamnion of the parasitoid egg, are responsible. The titre of the juvenile hormone esterase activity in the haemolymph of the parasitized fourth instar host is similar to that in the initial period of the final instar of normal T. ni, but lacks the postwandering peak of activity. The increased JHE activity leads to a reduced JH titre early in the fourth stadia. This indicates that disruption of host development occurs within 12h after apolysis to the fourth stadium, if not before. Anti-juvenile hormone activity is not detected in extracts of parasitized T. ni. The morphological and behavioural changes associated with precocious development of the T. ni host are prevented by applications of juvenile hormone I, juvenile hormone II and the juvenoid, Ro 10–3108, but not juvenile hormone III and the juvenoid R 20458. However, these applications fail to prevent the onset of juvenile hormone esterase activity, another marker of precocious development. These observations indicate that simple anti-juvenile hormone activity may not be the mechanism of disruption of host development. Development of the parasitoid is disrupted by application of Ro 10–3108 and juvenile hormones I, II and III, but timing of eclosion is only affected by application of juvenile hormone I, juvenile hormone II and Ro 10–3108. This observation may indicate a discrimination by the parasitoid between its own juvenile hormone III and the host's juvenile hormone II.  相似文献

A bryozoan buildup from the Lower Carboniferous of North Wales   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A carbonate buildup dominated by trepostome Bryozoa is described from Dinantian (Asbian) strata near Llandudno in North Wales. A three-phase ecological succession is recognised within the buildup: (i) a basal diverse community with fenestrate, ramose, encrusting trepostome and cystoporate bryozoans in a mud rich wackestone; (ii) a bulk facies, dominated by encrusting and foliaceous, trepostome bryozoans in a fine packstone, and (iii) a thin capping phase, dominated by unilaminar, encrusting trepostome bryozoans in a slightly coarser lithology, including skeletal debris derived from the mound top and possible flanking beds. The buildup probably had topographic relief and developed in a shallow marine environment. The internal tripartite zonation reflects the growth of the structure into a shallower, higher energy regime, with the capping beds being deposited just below wave base. The buildup developed to the north of St. George's Land, on a carbonate shelf edge bordering the deeper basinal facies of the Irish Sea Basin. Climatic and biogeographical associations of southern African dung beetles (Scarabaeinae, Coprinae) were analysed from a collection amassed between 1971 and 1986. Endemism to Africa south of 15°S was much greater in southwesterly climates (winter rainfall, bimodal spring/autumn rainfall, arid late summer rainfall) than to the north‐east in the moist, mid‐summer rainfall region. Major biogeographical groups centred to the south‐west comprised predominantly southern African endemics, Western/Eastern Cape coast, Karoo, Karoo/Namib, northern Namibia and the south‐western Kalahari. Biogeographical groups centred on the south‐eastern highlands and the subtropical east coast (mid‐summer rainfall) also comprised predominantly southern African endemics. All other major groups centred to the north‐east in the mid‐summer rainfall region comprised predominantly species with widespread tropical biogeographical affiliations, pan‐southern Africa but centred in the east, pan‐mid‐summer rainfall region, eastern mid‐summer rainfall region, tropical east Zimbabwe/central Moçambique, subtropical/tropical game reserves (non‐ruminant dung specialists). There were cross‐climatic differences in taxonomic composition of the fauna. Within the winter rainfall region, percentage species composition of Scarabaeinae was greater whereas that of the coprine tribe, Onthophagini, was lower than within the other three climatic regions. Percentage species richness of most other tribes of Coprinae differed little between most climates but that of Scarabaeinae declined from west to east (Canthonini, Scarabaeini), east to west (Sisyphini) or to either side of the late summer rainfall region (Gymnopleurini).  相似文献

Abstract: The first abundant, well‐preserved fossils of the unusual archosauromorph reptile Trilophosaurus jacobsi Murry are from an Upper Triassic bonebed in the lowermost Trujillo Formation of the Chinle Group in Borden County, Texas. A nearly complete left side of the skull and incomplete but articulated mandible of a juvenile individual demonstrate that Trilophosaurus jacobsi Murry is referable to Trilophosaurus, so the putative procolophonid genus Chinleogomphius is a junior objective synonym of Trilophosaurus. Features of T. jacobsi that diagnose it from T. buettneri include asymmetrical, tricuspate teeth in which the central cusp is taller than the marginal cusp, polygonal in cross‐section and displaced slightly lingually; the lingual cusp is low, transversely broadened and anteroposteriorly compressed; teeth with prominent cingula along the mesial and distal margins; and paired sagittal (parasagittal) crests composed of portions of the postfrontals and the parietals, as well as a relatively broad skull roof between the supratemporal fenestrae. We also re‐illustrate and re‐describe the holotypes of both Trilophosaurus buettneri Case and T. jacobsi Murry. T. jacobsi is primarily Adamanian in age, and the lowest occurrence of T. jacobsi is stratigraphically above that of T. buettneri. Therefore, T. buettneri is an Otischalkian–Adamanian index taxon, and T. jacobsi is an Adamanian–?earliest Revueltian index taxon. Trilophosaurus teeth are readily identifiable to species and therefore identifiable as isolated fossils.  相似文献
