A GROUP B herpesvirus is important in the aetiology of Marek's disease, a highly contagious lymphoproliferative disease of chickens1,2. Chicks inoculated with enveloped Marek's disease herpesvirus (MDHV), extracted from feather follicle epithelium of chickens with the disease, developed tumour-like aggregates of lymphoid cells in the viscera and frequently in the peripheral nerves3,4. Cultures of chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells infected with MDHV develop discrete foci of altered cells5. Our data show that MDHV infection of cultures of CEF cells, previously infected with an avian leucosis virus (RAV-2), results in both a reduction in the number of MDHV foci and an increase in the complement fixing avian leucosis antigen (COFAL)6 titre.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Depredation by wolves (Canis lupus) could threaten survival of reintroduced wild Przewalski horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) in Hustai National Park (HNP), Mongolia. We conducted scat analysis, spatial analyses of kills, and interviews to study prey species selection and temporal and spatial factors that characterize prey choices of wolves. Diet of wolves in HNP was comprised of >50% of livestock. Diet composition varied during the year, with more livestock taken in winter. Wildlife species were selected over livestock species. From available livestock species domestic horses were predated most, whereas red deer (Cervus elaphus) and marmot (Marmota sibirica) were the preferred wildlife species. Our spatial analyses showed an unexpected significant positive relation between number of domestic horses killed and distance to the park, as well as a significant negative relation with number of gers (tents) in the area. Compared to randomly selected comparison sites (n = 36), we found Przewalski foal kills (n = 36) at sites that were closer to the forest, at higher altitudes, with lower shrub cover, higher forest cover, and higher red deer density. If the negative trend of deer numbers continues and if herdsmen protect their livestock more vigorously, depredation of wild Przewalski horses by wolves will rise. Therefore, a large red deer population could be pivotal in improving the conservation status of Przewalski horses.  相似文献

The diversification and early evolution of neosauropod dinosaurs is mainly recorded from the Upper Jurassic of North America, Europe, and Africa. Our understanding of this evolutionary stage is far from complete, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. A partial skeleton of a large sauropod from the Upper Jurassic Cañadón Calcáreo Formation of Patagonia was originally described as a ‘cetiosaurid’ under the name Tehuelchesaurus benitezii. The specimen is here redescribed in detail and the evidence presented indicates that this taxon is indeed a neosauropod, thus representing one of the oldest records of this clade in South America. A complete preparation of the type specimen and detailed analysis of its osteology revealed a great number of features of phylogenetic significance, such as fully opisthocoelous dorsal vertebrae, the persistence of true pleurocoels up to the first sacral vertebra, associated with large camerae in the centrum and supraneural camerae, and an elaborate neural arch lamination, including two apomorphic laminae in the infradiapophyseal fossa. The phylogenetic relationships of this taxon are tested through an extensive cladistic analysis that recovers Tehuelchesaurus as a non‐titanosauriform camarasauromorph, deeply nested within Neosauropoda. Camarasauromorph sauropods were widely distributed in the Late Jurassic, indicating a rapid evolution and diversification of the group. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 163 , 605–662.  相似文献

P2Y2 receptor expression is increased in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) during inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). In this context, P2Y2 stimulates PGE2 release by IECs, suggesting a role in wound healing. For this study, we have used the non‐cancerous IEC‐6 cell line. IEC‐6 cell migration was determined using Boyden chambers and the single‐edged razor blade model of wounding. The receptor was activated using ATP, UTP, or 2‐thioUTP. Pharmacological inhibitors, a blocking peptide, a neutralizing antibody and interfering RNAs were used to characterize the signaling events. Focal adhesions and microtubule (MT) dynamics were determined by immunofluorescence using anti‐vinculin and anti‐acetylated‐α‐tubulin antibodies, respectively. In vivo, the dextran sodium sulfate mouse model of colitis was used to characterize the effects of P2Y2 agonist 2‐thioUTP on remission. We showed that P2Y2 increased cell migration and wound closure by recruiting Go protein with the cooperation of integrin αv. Following P2Y2 activation, we demonstrated that GSK3β activity was inhibited in response to Akt activation. This leads to MT stabilization and increased number of focal adhesions. In vivo, P2Y2 activation stimulates remission, as illustrated by a reduction in the disease activity index values and histological scores as compared to control mice. These findings highlight a novel function for this receptor in IECs. They also illustrate that P2Y receptors could be targeted for the development of innovative therapies for the treatment of IBDs. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the genus Huperzia Bernh. in the Azores and Madeira have been reviewed. Plants collected in the Azores and Madeira were characterized morphologically. The independence between two endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores Islands –Huperzia suberecta (Lowe) Tardieu and Huperzia dentata (Herter) Holub – is clearly shown. A clear‐cut morphological separation between these taxa and Huperzia selago (L.) Bernh. ex Schrank & Mart. of continental Europe is established. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 522–533.  相似文献

Blanco R.E., Rinderknecht, A. & Lecuona, G. 2011: The bite force of the largest fossil rodent (Hystricognathi, Caviomorpha, Dinomyidae). Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 157–163. An exceptionally well‐preserved skull of the largest fossil rodent Josephoartigasia monesi allows the first analysis of the bite mechanics of this group of South American giant rodents. In this study, we reconstructed the main anatomical features of the skull of this Pliocene rodent, relating them to the bite force at incisors. Bite force was estimated using three different techniques. Two methods suggest that bite forces at incisors of around 1000 N were possible for these mammals. However, the incisors seem to be stronger than expected for this bite force implying that the bite forces may have been greater than 3000 N. We consider three hypotheses: allometric effects, teeth digging or defence against predators, to explain our results. □Bite force, Dinomyidae, incisors, largest rodent, Pliocene.  相似文献

1. Predation‐exclusion experiments have highlighted that top‐down control is pervasive in terrestrial communities, but most of these experiments are simplistic in that they only excluded a single group of predators and the effect of removal was evaluated on a few species from the community. The main goal of our study was to experimentally establish the relative effects of ants and birds on the same arthropod assemblage of canopy trees. 2. We conducted 1‐year long manipulative experiments in an organic citrus grove intended to quantify the independent effects of bird and ant predators on the abundance of arthropods. Birds were excluded with plastic nets whereas ants were excluded with sticky barriers on the trunks. The sticky barrier also excluded other ground dwelling insects, like the European earwig Forficula auricularia L. 3. Both the exclusion of ants and birds affected the arthropod community of the citrus canopies, but the exclusion of ants was far more important than the exclusion of birds. Indeed, almost all groups of arthropods had higher abundance in ant‐excluded than in control trees, whereas only dermapterans were more abundant in bird‐excluded than in control trees. A more detailed analysis conducted on spiders also showed that the effect of ant exclusion was limited to a few families rather than being widespread over the entire diverse spectrum of spiders. 4. Our results suggest that the relative importance of vertebrate and invertebrate predators in regulating arthropod populations largely depends on the nature of the predator–prey system.  相似文献

The new stick insect family Gallophasmatidae, based on Gallophasma longipalpis gen. et sp.n. , from the Earliest Eocene French amber has a pattern of tegmina venation typical of Archaeorthoptera, also present in at least some Mesozoic ‘Phasmatodea’. On the other hand, Gallophasma displays in its body anatomy some apomorphies of the extant Euphasmatodea, e.g. fusion of metatergum and abdominal tergum 1, correlated with the reduction of abdominal sternum 1 to lateral triangular sclerites. A unique autapomorphy of Gallophasma is the presence of annulated and apparently multi‐segmented or pseudo‐segmented cerci; all other Phasmatodea have one‐segmented cerci. The venation of the tegmina of Gallophasma differs from that of extant winged Phasmatodea in the plesiomorphic absence of a knob‐like dorsal eversion. This and other differences in the wing venation between extant and extinct Phasmatodea might have been caused by the loss of wings at some point in the evolutionary history of the order and their secondary gain in a subclade of the extant phasmids.  相似文献

Protein phosphatase 2A holoenzyme and its subunits from Medicago sativa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We detected an about 200 kDa holoenzyme of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in the crude extract of Medicago sativa microcallus cells by gel permeation chromatography. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR) we isolated two M. sativa cDNA fragments corresponding to the catalytic (C) subunit, and one each coding for the A and the B regulatory subunits of PP2A. The C subunit sequences were different from that published previously, indicating the existence of at least three different isoforms in M. sativa. Using the PCR fragments as probes, we obtained two distinct full-length clones for both the A and B subunits from an alfalfa cDNA library. Our results demonstrate that the components of the PP2A holoenzyme, namely the catalytic and regulatory subunits, are present in alfalfa in several isoforms and that their sequences are highly similar to their plant, yeast and animal counterparts. The distinct regulatory subunit genes are constitutively expressed during the cell cycle. Interestingly, two A-B subunit pairs had parallel mRNA steady-state levels in different plant tissues suggesting that not all of the possible isoform combinations are present in all tissues. The expression of the MsPP2A B subunit form was induced by abscisic acid indicating a specific function for this protein in the stress response.  相似文献

Arctic seas have warmed and sea ice has retreated. This has resulted in range contraction and population declines in some species, but it could potentially be a boon for others. Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo have a partially wettable plumage and seem poorly suited to foraging in Arctic waters. We show that rates of population change of Cormorant colonies around Disko Bay, Greenland, are positively correlated with sea surface temperature, suggesting that they may benefit from a warming Arctic. However, although Cormorant populations may increase in response to Arctic warming, the extent of expansion of their winter range may ultimately be limited by other factors, such as sensory constraints on foraging behaviour during long Arctic nights.  相似文献
