This study explores the development of laypeople's preferences for newly emerging climate engineering technology (CE). It examines whether laypeople perceive CE to be an acceptable back-up strategy (plan B) if current efforts to mitigate CO2 emissions were to fail. This idea is a common justification for CE research in the scientific debate and may significantly influence future public debates. Ninety-eight German participants chose their preferred climate policy strategy in a quasi-realistic scenario. Participants could chose between mitigation and three CE techniques as alternative options. We employed a think-aloud interview technique, which allowed us to trace participants’ informational needs and thought processes. Drawing on Huber's risk management decision theory, the study addressed whether specific CE options are more likely to be accepted if they are mentally represented as a back-up strategy. Results support this assumption, especially for cloud whitening. This result is especially relevant considering the high prevalence of the plan B framing in CE appraisal studies and its implications for public opinion-formation processes.  相似文献

A key aspect for understanding the biological and biochemical environment of subglacial waters, on Earth or other planets and moons in the Solar system, is the analysis of material embedded in or underneath icy layers on the surface. In particular the Antarctic lakes (most prominently Lake Vostok) but also the icy crust of Jupiter’s moon Europa or the polar caps of Mars require such investigation. One possible technique to penetrate thick ice layers with small and reliable probes is by melting, which does not require the heavy, complex and expensive equipment of a drilling rig. While melting probes have successfully been used for terrestrial applications e.g. in Antarctic ice, their performance in vacuum is different and theory needs confirmation by tests. Thus, a vacuum chamber has been used to perform a series of melting tests in cold (liquid nitrogen cooled) water ice samples. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated and the energy demand for a space mission could be estimated. Due to the high energy demand in case of extraterrestrial application (e.g. Europa or polar caps of Mars), only heating with radioactive isotopes seems feasible for reaching greater depths. The necessary power is driven by the desired penetration velocity (approximately linearly) and the dimensions of the probe (proportional to the cross section). In comparison to traditional drilling techniques the application of a melting probe for exploration of Antarctic lakes offers the advantage that biological contamination is minimized, since the Probe can be sterilized and the melting channel freezes immediately after the probe’s passage, inhibiting exchange with the surface layers and the atmosphere. In order to understand the physical and chemical nature of the ice layers, as well as for analysing the underlying water body, a melting probe needs to be equipped with a suite of scientific instruments that are capable of e.g. determining the chemical and isotopic composition of the embedded or dissolved materials.  相似文献

The report refers to substitution therapy of 33 patients who suffered consumption coagulopathy. Various blood coagulation and fibrinolytic variables were measured. After successful AT III donation to patients suffering DIC, soluble fibrin monomer complexes (SFMC) disappeared within 0.5-12 hours. If AT III decreases SFMC proves positive again. In addition to analysis of AT III we recommend to analyse SFMC to detect thrombin induced consumption reaction (DIC). Furthermore we found the fibrin split product D-dimer was a particularly sensitive indicator of DIC in case of hyperfibrinolysis (D-dimer was analysed in six patients). The reactions of fibronectin and SFMC proved inversely proportional.  相似文献

Summary From 36 to 71% of bacteria, depending on the sampling site, that were isolated from the soil or rhizosphere of undisturbed prairie soil or reclamation sites of strip-mined grassland areas in western North Dakota were capable of reducing acetylene. These bacteria generally could be divided into two populations; one capable of acetylene reduction under aerobic conditions and another capable of acetylene reduction under anaerobic conditions. The reclamation site to which no topsoil had been applied, pH 8.5, had a bacterial population which generally was capable of higher levels of acetylene reduction than individual bacteria isolated from other sites.  相似文献

We analysed the early visual responses of relay cells of the dorsal part of cat lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) for the occurrence and characteristics of high-frequency (>300 Hz) spike patterns comparable to the high-frequency oscillations (HFO) found in the human somatosensory system. By using a special algorithm for correcting response latency, we can show that the vast majority of dLGN visual responses which were elicited by a sudden change in contrast show HFOs in the range of 300 to more than 800 Hz. After response time correction these HFOs are clearly visible in summed responses, indicating that these patterns are highly reproducible by identical stimuli. On this basis we analysed the HFOs in more detail. We found the oscillation frequency to increase with stimulus contrast and the area of the receptive field centre covered by an excitatory stimulus. Inhibition reduces the oscillation frequency as demonstrated with additional stimulation of the antagonistic surround of the receptive field and by blocking inhibition with micro-iontophoretical application of bicuculline methiodide. The HFO was almost independent of the state of the system as estimated from the EEG pattern. Based on these findings we discuss whether bursts of action potentials triggered by the low-threshold calcium spike (LTS) can contribute to this pattern of visual thalamic activity.  相似文献

Background  

The efficiency of biotechnological production processes depends on selecting the best performing microbial strain and the optimal cultivation conditions. Thus, many experiments have to be conducted, which conflicts with the demand to speed up drug development processes. Consequently, there is a great need for high-throughput devices that allow rapid and reliable bioprocess development. This need is addressed, for example, by the fiber-optic online-monitoring system BioLector which utilizes the wells of shaken microtiter plates (MTPs) as small-scale fermenters. To further improve the application of MTPs as microbioreactors, in this paper, the BioLector technology is combined with microfluidic bioprocess control in MTPs. To realize a user-friendly system for routine laboratory work, disposable microfluidic MTPs are utilized which are actuated by a user-friendly pneumatic hardware.  相似文献

A frequent missense mutation (Thr-6Pro) found in the prepeptide of the lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) gene was analyzed in a cohort of 1003 randomly selected samples from Germany, Japan and Sardinia (Italy). Using the mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR), allele frequencies of 0.269, 0.238 and 0.245 were determined in the three populations, respectively. Statistical analysis showed a lack of association with a dyslipidemic phenotype in all three groups. Additionally, in a subgroup of 126 German individuals no association was observed between genotype and LAL activity. We conclude that this mutation appears to be a frequent LAL gene polymorphism causing no impaired function of the enzyme and no measurable dyslipidemia in the general population.This study was performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki  相似文献
