Seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora, were grown in open-top chambers fumigated with ambient and elevated [CO2], and were divided into two populations using 10% light transmittance screens. The aim was to separate the effects of timing of light interception, temperature and [CO2] on plant growth. The orientation of the screens exposed plants to a similar total irradiance, but incident during either cold mornings (east-facing) or warm afternoons (west-facing). Following the first autumn freezing event elevated CO2-grown plants had 10 times more necrotic leaf area than ambient CO2 plants. West-facing plants had significantly greater (25% more) leaf damage and lower photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) in comparison with east-facing plants. Following a late spring freezing event east-facing elevated CO2 plants suffered a greater sustained loss in Fv/Fm than west-facing elevated CO2- and ambient CO2-grown plants. Stomatal conductance was lower under elevated CO2 than ambient CO2 except during late spring, with the highest leaf temperatures occurring in west-facing plants under elevated CO2. These higher leaf temperatures apparently interfered with cold acclimation thereby enhancing frost damage and reducing the ability to take advantage of optimal growing conditions under elevated CO2.  相似文献

In the salamander embryo, the morphogenetic movements of neurulationare correlated with two cell shape changes in the neural epithelium:elongation and apical constriction of the columnar neural platecells. Cells first elongate to form the flat open neural plateand then constrict apically as the plate rolls up to form theneural tube. Evidence is presented that these cell shape changesare intrinsic to the cells themselves and that they play a causalrole in the morphogenetic movements. Neural plate cells containnumerous microtubules oriented parallel to the axis of elongation.These microtubules are critical to the elongation process. Possiblemechanisms for microtubule function in cell elongation are considered.During apical constriction the cells contain bundles of microfilamentswhich encircle the cell apex in purse-string fashion. Evidenceis presented which suggests that microfilament bundles playan active role in apical constriction, and that this localizedcontraction is produced by filament sliding.  相似文献

The morphology and anatomy of pollen presenters, styles andpollen of species ofBanksia, Dryandra, Hakea, IsopogonandMacadamiawerestudied. Serial sections of pistils and SEM images of pollenwere quantified to determine whether the low fertility observedin the Proteaceae has a structural basis. Pollen access to thestigma was investigated. There were three types of stigmaticcavity. A groove in which the stigmatic papillae were enclosedwas present inDryandra, BanksiaandHakea. Macadamiahad a groovewith protruding papillae, andIsopogonhad a tube which enclosedthe papillae. Anatomical studies showed the pollen presenterto be structurally complex but overall to have similar internalanatomy across the species studied. The species could be groupedaccording to presence or absence of transfer tissue and presenceor absence of sclerenchyma, but these groups were not mutuallyexclusive. In the pistil there were three structural filtersto pollen tube passage. The first was at the stigma, where pollengrain access could be limited by the diameter or length of thestigmatic groove or the capacity of the pollination chamberin relation to pollen volume. The Albanerpetontidae are Middle Jurassic-Miocene amphibians that have variously been regarded as caudates (salamanders), a clade distinct from caudates, or incertae sedis lissamphibians. Here I test for monophyly of the Albanerpetontidae and examine the affinities of the group, within the framework of a more inclusive Temnospondyli, by performing a cladistic analysis using 59 informative characters scored for four non-lissamphibian temnospondyl genera, stem- and crown-clade caudates, salientians (frogs), gymnophionans (caecilians), and the two recognized albanerpetontid genera Albanerpeton and Celtedens . Monophyly of the Albanerpetontidae is corroborated. I interpret synapomorphies of the marginal teeth (non-pedicellate; crowns chisel like, labiolingually compressed, with three mesiodistally aligned cuspules) in albanerpetontids as being associated with a shearing bite. Other synapomorphies evidently strengthened and increased the mobility of the skull, mandible, and cervical region for burrowing, feeding, or both. Nested sets of synapomorphies place the Albanerpetontidae within the Lissamphibia, as the sistertaxon of Caudata plus Salientia. None of the 17 characters previously advanced as albanerpetontid-caudate synapomorphies convincingly places the Albanerpetontidae within the Caudata or allies the two groups as sistertaxa. Albanerpetontids are better interpreted not as aberrant caudates, but as a distinct clade of lissamphibians in which numerous apomorphies are superimposed upon an otherwise primitive lissamphibian body plan.  相似文献

Because of its remoteness and mid-latitude position, New Zealand lacks access to the tropical climates that might have ensured straightforward survival for frost-sensitive species during glacial times. Nevertheless, the New Zealand lowland flora retains a substantial complement of plants sourced in the tropics. While there have been extinction pulses for elements of the frost-sensitive flora under glacial/stadial regimes, the surviving remnants have been able to recolonize large areas of habitat during successive warm climate periods. Refugia for such species in stadial New Zealand are likely to have been localized and ecologically suboptimal. To examine these relationships we have applied chloroplast DNA sequence data to the investigation of phylogeographical pattern for five endemic species of Metrosideros subg. Metrosideros , a wide-ranging group of mostly frost-sensitive woody plants in New Zealand. The results of this research verify the location of two generally mooted stadial refugia for the country and provide support for the existence of a third. A simple pattern of chloroplast haplotype diversity was recorded in extra-refugial areas, compared with a greater complexity in the vicinity of the identified refugia. This pattern was independently repeated in both main islands. The proposed refugia correspond to contemporary localities of high average winter temperatures. The sharing of chloroplast haplotypes between the different species of Metrosideros examined suggests that there has been a history of repeated hybridization and introgression for these plants, possibly initiated by periods of refugial confinement.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 399–412.  相似文献

Measures of genetic relatedness are essential to models of evolution by kin selection and determinations of inclusive fitness. Under a kin selection paradigm, individuals are expected to distribute actions influencing the fitness of relatives based on the relatedness of these relatives. In addition, it is necessary to have an accurate measure of relatedness to estimate heritability (h2) of phenotypic characters and to predict the efficacy of selection. Relatedness is often defined as the genotypic correlation between individuals. Assessed on the basis of common ancestry, relatedness can only be determined sensu strictu from pedigree analysis. Recent methodological and statistical advances allow the estimation of relatedness from allele frequency data. Many coefficients of relatedness can be found in the literature; I review and evaluate these, with emphasis on situations for which each is appropriate.  相似文献

Population genetics theory suggests that two species which are reproductively isolated only by postzygotic barriers cannot co-exist in sympatry since the rarer population will become extinct. Mimulus nudatus and Mimulus guttatus are two closely related species that are isolated by a postzygotic barrier operating at the seed provisioning stage. On several sites on die serpentine soils of Lake and Napa counties, California, M. nudatus and M. guttatus live in sympatry and flowering times of the species overlap, so the species are sometimes flowering next to each other. We investigated whether there was any reduction in fertility of M. nudatus and M. guttatus caused by interspecific crosses when growing in sympatry. The pollinators of M. nudatus and M. guttatus were identified. Small sweat bees, Dialictus sp., preferentially visited the smaller flowered M. nudatus species and honey bees, Apis mellifera , preferred the larger flowered M. guttatus . In spite of most pollinator visits being intra-specinc, individuals of bodi bee species made transitions between the Mimulus species. This will result in greater pollen transfer from M. guttatus to M. nudatus than vice versa because firstly, M. guttatus produces more pollen and secondly, the sweat bees were too small to touch the stigma of a M. guttatus flower. This asymmetry in gene flow was detected by a greater reduction in viable seed produced by M. nudatus plants when surrounded by M. guttatus plants dian vice versa. Only when M. nudatus was the maternal parent could any hybrids be detected in field produced seed. To enable M. nudatus and M. guttatus to co-exist in sympatry, the two species may thus need to be sufficiendy ecologically different. Such ecological differentiation was attributed to the greater drought tolerance of M. nudatus . In addition, greenhouse experiments suggested that M. nudatus may have evolved greater tolerance to calcium deficient soils.  相似文献

The initiation, development and structure of the leaf nodulesof the Rubiaceous shrub Psychotria kirkii Hiern. has been studiedin detail at the ultrastructural level. Bacteria, maintainedin the shoot tip in the secretions from dendroid colleters,invade the substomatal chamber of stomatal pores which formprecociously on the abaxial leaf surface. Proliferation of theepidermis around the pore pushes the bacterial cavity deep intothe lamina, thus forming a small internal nodule. Endophyte-mediatedschizogeny of the cells surroundng the nodule causes it to expandwhile at the same time giving rise to an interconnected reticulumof invasive host cells which are involved in metabolite exchangebetween microoganisms and host plant. Bacterial morphology changesafter entry of the microsymbiont into the host plant and, bythe time the nodule is mature, the bacteria exhibit distinctpleomorphism. Senescent nodules are shown to accumulate lipidand starch. The developmental process is discussed in the lightof existing information on this symbiosis. The metamorphic rate of Rana pipiens tadpoles was studied under different photoperiods, daylengths, and feeding schedules. Tail resorption and hindlimb growth and development induced by immersion in 30 μg/l thyroxine (T4) were accelerated under longer photoperiods and continuous light when 6L: 18D, 12L: 12D, 18L: 6D, and 24L regimes were compared. Constant light exposure did not produce faster development than an 18 hr photoperiod, and initially was less effective. The rate of spontaneous and T4-induced metamorphosis was greater the shorter the day on 9L:9D, 12L: 12D, or 15L: 15D cycles, although all groups received the same overall amount of light, but in different dosages. When feeding schedule but not the LD cycle was varied, groups of tadpoles fed on 18, 24, or 30 hr regimes showed no differences in growth and development rate on 19L: 5D, and only random variations under continuous light. Differences in metamorphic rate on 18, 24, or 30 hr days are not due to the feeding schedules, but to the LD cycles. From these experiments we conclude that illumination, particularly the length and frequency of the photoperiod, affects the utilization of T4. Development rates independent of the total amount of illumination, but related to daylength and light schedule, suggest interaction of light with an endogenous timing mechanism.  相似文献
