We tested the hypotheses that relative activity of the less efficient alternative oxidase (AOX) path changes with diurnal temperature changes, and thus changes carbon use efficiency with temperature. The activities of the alternative and cytochrome oxidase (COX) paths in plant tissues of three species were determined by measuring 18 O/16 O discrimination and total respiration from 17 to 36 °C. A new, more accurate method for calculating oxygen uptake rate from the mass spectrometry data was developed. Total carbon use efficiency was calculated from the ratio of respiratory heat and CO2 rates measured from 10 to 35 °C. Oxygen isotope discrimination (22.9 ± 0.4‰) and AOX participation were invariant with temperature in leaf tissue of Cucurbita pepo , Nicotiana sativa and Vicia faba , thus falsifying the first part of the hypothesis. Stress responses of respiration at the temperature extremes limited the range for which carbon use efficiency could be accurately measured to 15–30 °C in N. sativa , to 10–25 °C in C. pepo and to 20–30 °C in V. faba . Carbon-use efficiency was invariant at these temperatures in these species, demonstrating that changes in other pathways that would vary carbon-use efficiency were also invariant with temperature. 相似文献

Abstract: We immobilized elk with either isoflurane to produce general anesthesia (control), 0.01 mg/kg carfentanil plus 0.1 mg/kg xylazine, or 0.25 mg/kg butorphanol plus 0.4 mg/kg azaperone plus 0.15 mg/kg medetomidine (BAM) and measured the bispectral index (BIS). The carfentanil-xylazine BIS (70.4 + 1.4) and the BAM BIS (60.2 + 1.5) were higher than the control BIS (47.2 + 4.1; P ≤ 0.001). These data indicate that opioids produce neuroleptanalgesia and not general anesthesia or sedation, which explains observed elk responses to these drugs. 相似文献

Growth and Maintenance Respiration in Whole Plants, Tops, and Roots of Lolium multiflorum 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Continuous measurements of CO2-exchange were separately carried out on tops and roots of small swards of Lolium multiflorum grown in nutrient solution in growth chamber during 3–4 weeks. From these measurements, a daily carbon balance and accumulated dry matter could be established. The data were used to distinguish between two components of respiration, one proportional to growth or photosynthesis (growth respiration), the other proportional to plant dry weight (maintenance respiration). The separation of respiration in the two components was made by multiple regression analyses with daily photosynthesis or growth rate and accumulated dry matter as the independent variables. To ensure independency between the independent variables during the growth period, photosynthesis was varied by application of alternate three-day periods of high and low irradiance. From the two regression coefficients, the efficiency of converting assimilates into constructive growth (YG) and the maintenance coefficient (M) could be derived. Three experiments with varying length of photoperiod and dark period were carried out. The analyses were carried out for whole-plant respiration, respiration of tops and respiration of roots separately. Growth respiration for whole plants as well as for tops and for roots was lower — and hence the efficiencies higher — the longer the photoperiods were. Growth respiration and maintenance respiration were higher for roots than for tops. The high rate of root respiration may originate from release of HCO3? in exchange for NO3?. The parameters found can be utilized quantitatively in computer models of crop photosynthesis and respiration. 相似文献
