We have reviewed fine needle aspirates from 11 patients with pancreatic endocrine tumours and evaluated the diagnostic criteria as well as those proposed in the literature in an attempt to formulate reliable criteria for the cytological diagnosis of these tumours. As expected, no single criterion was reliable for diagnosis: however, cells with rounded or polygonal rather than a columnar shape, cytoplasmic granularity, and eccentricity of round or oval nuclei with a finely stippled, evenly distributed chromatin pattern were features which taken together, usually enabled one to make a reliable diagnosis. A striking feature of the smears was the cellular monotony and absence of pleomorphism of the tumour cells. Immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy identified tumour products and confirmed the diagnosis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The first known fossil slime mold with part of the plasmodium preserved, from Eocene-Oligocene amber of the northern Dominican Republic, is described here. We assign it to the myxomycetes on the basis of its cytoplasmic structure. The paleoecological and evolutionary importance of this fossil is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Homogenates of the developing endosperms of maize, wheat, andbarley and of developing cotyledons of peas have been separatedon sucrose density gradients. Protein bodies have been recognizedby their content of storage proteins, their density, and theirappearance under the electron microscope. The distribution ofthe endoplasmic reticulum was followed by measuring NADH-cytochromec reductase. Glutamate dehydrogenase, catalase, and triose phosphatedehydrogenase—respectively marker enzymes for mitochondria,microbodies, and plastids—were also present in the gradients.Differences were found between the different species with respectto the association between the endoplasmic reticulum and thestorage proteins. There was no evidence for any vacuolar markerenzymes associated with the cereal protein bodies. The proteinbodies of wheat and barley appear to be similar to each otherbut differ from maize in that the latter have much more endoplasmicreticulum associated with them. Niche variation between hybrid taxa and their parental species has been deemed imperative to the persistence of hybrid populations in nature. However, the ecological factors promoting hybrid establishment remain poorly understood. Through the application of a multidisciplinary approach integrating genetics, morphometry, life‐history, and trophic ecology, we studied the hybrids of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) and bream (Abramis brama L.), and their parental species inhabiting an Irish lake. The roach × bream hybrid exhibited a body shape intermediate of that of the parental species. Diet analyses depicted the hybrid as a generalist, feeding on all prey items consumed by either parental species. Stable isotope data confirm the trophic niche breadth of hybrids. A significant correlation between body shape and diet was detected, suggesting that the intermediate phenotype of hybrids might play a role in their feeding abilities, resulting in the utilization of a broader trophic spectrum than the parental species. Growth and age class structure analyses also yielded a scenario that is consistent with the ecological success of hybrids. Genetic analyses suggest that the majority of hybrids result from first‐generation crosses between the parental species; however, a potentially significant proportion of back‐crosses with bream were also detected. The recent introduction of roach and bream into Irish waters, as well as the climatic and ecological features of the colonized habitats, can explain the remarkable success of the roach × bream hybrid in Ireland. Global change includes multiple stressors to natural ecosystems ranging from direct climate and land‐use impacts to indirect degradation processes resulting from fire. Humid tropical forests are vulnerable to projected climate change and possible synergistic interactions with deforestation and fire, which may initiate a positive feedback to rising atmospheric CO2. Here, we present results from a multifactorial impact analysis that combined an ensemble of climate change models with feedbacks from deforestation and accidental fires to quantify changes in Amazon Basin carbon cycling. Using the LPJmL Dynamic Global Vegetation Model, we modelled spatio‐temporal changes in net biome production (NBP); the difference between carbon fluxes from fire, deforestation, soil respiration and net primary production. By 2050, deforestation and fire (with no CO2 increase or climate change) resulted in carbon losses of 7.4–20.3 Pg C with the range of uncertainty depending on socio‐economic storyline. During the same time period, interactions between climate and land use either compensated for carbon losses due to wetter climate and CO2 fertilization or exacerbated carbon losses from drought‐induced forest mortality (?20.1 to +4.3 Pg C). By the end of the 21st century, depending on climate projection and the rate of deforestation (including its interaction with fire), carbon stocks either increased (+12.6 Pg C) or decreased (?40.6 Pg C). The synergistic effect of deforestation and fire with climate change contributed up to 26–36 Pg C of the overall decrease in carbon stocks. Agreement between climate projections (n=9), not accounting for deforestation and fire, in 2050 and 2098 was relatively low for the directional change in basin‐wide NBP (19–37%) and aboveground live biomass (13–24%). The largest uncertainty resulted from climate projections, followed by implementation of ecosystem dynamics and deforestation. Our analysis partitions the drivers of tropical ecosystem change and is relevant for guiding mitigation and adaptation policy related to global change.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A delicate lace-like membrane covers the ovaries of Tabanus sulcifrons. These membranes were found to contain muscle fibres that provide the organs with motile properties. The lateral oviducts consist of a single layer of longitudinal muscles that form a structural syncytium by means of an extensive anastomosis of the fibres comprising it. The common oviduct is composed of two muscle layers, an outer sheath of circular muscle and an inner substratum of longitudinal muscle. Both of these layers showed evidence of a structural syncytium. When isolated in saline, the oviduct was spontaneously active and gave a simple phasic pattern of contraction. Such muscle preparations were sensitive to both 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) and the insect myotropic peptide, proctolin. Excitation was generally indicated by a rise in muscle tonus or an increase in the frequency and amplitude of individual phasic contractions, or all three characteristics. The threshold for activation with 5HT was variable, ranging from as low as 4 × 10-9M to 1 × 10-7M. Proctolin evoked a noticeable increase in the tonus of most oviducts at 10-10M. However, several preparations responded to as little as 3 × 10-11M proctolin.  相似文献
