Climatic variables such as temperature and precipitation play an important role in controlling local and regional scale differences in population dynamics and species distributions, and large-scale climatic events such as El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) have been shown to affect population dynamics of key species in many ecosystems, particularly in kelp forests. Few studies have been able to evaluate the consequences of climate variables on the structure and dynamics of biological communities, in large part because the lack of data at appropriate spatial and temporal scales has made it difficult to adequately address local-scale responses of species and communities to such events over relevant time scales. Here, we combined an unprecedented dataset of kelp forest species' abundances from the Channel Islands, California with data for several local, regional, and global scale climatic variables to evaluate the temporal and spatial scale at which one can detect community-wide effects of climate variables, in particular ENSO events. We found large and significant local-scale differences in community structure, but these differences were not related to differences in climatic variables. Moreover, giant kelp abundance, which has been shown to be highly sensitive to water temperature and storm disturbance, was a poor predictor of community differences, and all communities tended to decline in abundance over the 20-year sampling period, suggesting a press perturbation to the system such as PDO cycles or sustained fishing pressure. Although ENSO events can have dramatic impacts on the abundance and distribution of giant kelp itself across the range of the species, such events appear to have little effect on local-scale kelp forest community structure or dynamics.  相似文献

Summary

The reproductive cycle of an Alvania species is studied for first time. Alvania mediolittoralis Gofas, 1989 is an endemic Azorean rissoid very common in sheltered places and particularly abundant among the algal turf covering the lower half of the intertidal and upper subtidal rocky shores. This species reproduces throughout the year, with two spawning peaks, one during early spring and the other in late autumn. In an attempt to relate to current paleobiogeographical studies, inferences are made regarding the ecological advantages of species with a continuous type of reproduction, on Azorean shores, during glacial episodes.  相似文献

We model future changes in land biogeochemistry and biogeography across East Africa. East Africa is one of few tropical regions where general circulation model (GCM) future climate projections exhibit a robust response of strong future warming and general annual‐mean rainfall increases. Eighteen future climate projections from nine GCMs participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment were used as input to the LPJ dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM), which predicted vegetation patterns and carbon storage in agreement with satellite observations and forest inventory data under the present‐day climate. All simulations showed future increases in tropical woody vegetation over the region at the expense of grasslands. Regional increases in net primary productivity (NPP) (18–36%) and total carbon storage (3–13%) by 2080–2099 compared with the present‐day were common to all simulations. Despite decreases in soil carbon after 2050, seven out of nine simulations continued to show an annual net land carbon sink in the final decades of the 21st century because vegetation biomass continued to increase. The seasonal cycles of rainfall and soil moisture show future increases in wet season rainfall across the GCMs with generally little change in dry season rainfall. Based on the simulated present‐day climate and its future trends, the GCMs can be grouped into four broad categories. Overall, our model results suggest that East Africa, a populous and economically poor region, is likely to experience some ecosystem service benefits through increased precipitation, river runoff and fresh water availability. Resulting enhancements in NPP may lead to improved crop yields in some areas. Our results stand in partial contradiction to other studies that suggest possible negative consequences for agriculture, biodiversity and other ecosystem services caused by temperature increases.  相似文献

We study the adaptive dynamics of virulence of a pathogen transmitted both via direct contacts between hosts and via free pathogens that survive in the environment. The model is very flexible with a number of trade-off functions linking virulence to other pathogen-related parameters and with two incidence functions that describe the contact rates between hosts and between a host and free pathogens. Instead of making a priori particular assumptions about the shapes of these functions, we introduce a construction method to create specific pairs of incidence functions such that the model becomes an optimization model. Unfolding the optimization model leads to coexistence of pathogen strains and evolutionary branching of virulence. The construction method is applicable to a wide range of eco-evolutionary models.  相似文献

The fossil woodwasp Cratoenigma articulata gen. et sp.n. (Insecta: Hymenoptera) is described from the Lower Cretaceous Crato formation of Brazil. This fossil cannot be placed in any existing superfamily, but its putative phylogenetic position within Hymenoptera is discussed in detail on the basis of relevant thoracic, abdominal and wing venation characters. These characters are critically evaluated and compared with those of extant and fossil Hymenoptera. The phylogenetic position of C. articulata sp.n. is investigated relative to extant Xyelidae, Tenthredinoidea s.l., Pamphilioidea, Cephidae, Siricoidea, Xiphydriidae, Orussidae and Apocrita, and also to Mesozoic Gigasiricidae, Myrmiciidae, Daohugoidae, Sepulcidae, Anaxyelidae, Paroryssidae and Ephialtitidae. Based on the presence of a synapomorphic transscutal articulation, a plesiomorphic unconcealed mesopostnotum and autapomorphic hindwing venation (cu‐a distinctly basal to fork between M and Cu), C. articulata sp.n. most likely forms the sister group of Xiphydriidae + Euhymenoptera. This would place it well within Unicalcarida, i.e. the clade in which the transition from endophytic to parasitoid lifestyle evolved.  相似文献

1. Anopheline larvae are surface feeders and allocate most of their time to search for food at the water surface. However, species of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex may also show bottom feeding. The consequences of this foraging tactic for life history are unknown, yet may be relevant to understand inter‐specific competition patterns. 2. The diving ability and activity of larvae of the main African malaria vectors, An. coluzzii and An. gambiae, at two different water depths (14 and 30 cm) were assessed. We further explored the biological relevance of diving for food harvesting by monitoring key life history traits in two species treatments (single or mixed species) and two food treatments (surface or bottom feeding). 3. Overall, An. coluzzii larvae showed more diving activity than An. gambiae. When feeding at the bottom both species, and especially An. gambiae, showed a delayed emergence and a reduced emergence rate. Moreover, An. gambiae also suffered a reduced wing length. 4. Mixed‐species rearing had a detrimental effect on the life history traits of An. gambiae but not on An. coluzzii, suggesting a competitive advantage for the latter in our experimental conditions. 5. The present results confirm that anopheline larvae are able to forage for food at the bottom of their breeding site and that An. coluzzii shows a superior diving activity than An. gambiae and this at a lower cost. These behavioural differences probably reflect specific adaptations to different aquatic habitats, and may be important in shaping species distributions and the population biology of these important vector mosquitoes.  相似文献

Abstract: To determine the spatial resolution of Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver data, rigorous testing is essential. We tested performance of the Lotek 3300 GPS collar for medium-sized mammals (Lotek Engineering, Inc., Newmarket, ON, Canada). To mimic real wildlife monitoring situations, we performed both static (stationary receiver) and mobile tests, placing the receiver collar on a dog. We compared fix locations of the mobile receiver with the actual trajectory described by a portable Trimble high-precision GPS. We determined performance in relation to habitat type and leaf cover. Location error was habitat-dependent, with the best results in open habitat and much poorer ones in forest, particularly coniferous-dominated forest. For both static and mobile tests, location accuracy was higher when the number of satellites contacted was high and when the residual positional dilution of precision (PDOP) value was low. However, location error was highly variable, even for a given PDOP value and a given number of satellites contacted. Finally, mobile collars performed less well than their static counterparts, presumably because of frequent changes of GPS position and orientation.  相似文献

1. Antlions are opportunistic trap building predators that cannot control prey encounter. Their trap should ideally retain a great diversity of prey. However, building a single trap that captures many prey with varying characteristics can be challenging. 2. A series of five different ant species ranging from thin to large, of sizes ranging from 2.75 to 6.5 mm, and a mean weight ranging from 0.54 to 6.00 mg were offered in a random succession to antlions. The state of satiation of the antlions was controlled, and their mass and the depth of their pit were recorded. The reaction of antlion to the prey, the probability of capture as well as the time to escape were recorded. 3. The probability of an antlion reaction is an increasing function of the pit depth and a decreasing function of antlion mass. The probability of capture is highest for intermediate prey mass and is an increasing function of pit depth. The time to escape is a declining function of prey mass and an increasing function of pit depth. 4. There is an upper limit to prey mass given that large prey escape out of the pit. There is a lower limit to prey mass given the difficulty to apprehend the smallest, thin species. Consequently, there is a range of prey mass, corresponding to a medium‐sized ant of 2 mg, for which the pit functions best. The physics of insect locomotion on sandy slopes was identified as the key to understanding the functioning of antlion pits.  相似文献
