We study the evolution of specialization in a spatially continuous (one‐dimensional) environment divided into two habitats; we use a general trade‐off function relating fitnesses in the two habitats and illustrate our results with two classical trade‐off functions. We show that the population can either reach an intermediate value of the trait and be moderately adapted to both habitats (1 generalist), or split into two locally adapted subpopulations (2 specialists). We recover the qualitative results obtained with simpler metapopulation models with island migration: the evolutionary outcome depends on the concavity of the trade‐off, on the proportion of each habitat and on migration. Our quantitative prediction on migration, however, depends on isolation by distance. Our spatially explicit model may thus be particularly useful to describe the evolutionary dynamics of specialization in, perhaps, more realistic ecological scenarios.  相似文献

This review is focused on one of the stages of ontogenesis distinctive by its particular tolerance to the action of unfavorable factors and ability to retain the genomic material for a long period of time, i.e., fungal spores. The major part is devoted to the characterization of the specific stage typical for spores, which is called dormancy. Data are presented characterizing the carbohydrate and lipid composition of spores, with special attention being paid to the role of carbohydrate protectors, in particular, trehalose and mannite, as well as to the role of rafts in the process of sporogenesis. The role of special compounds called autoinhibitors and autostimulators in the process of exit from dormancy is discussed. The final section deals with the role of spore seeding material in biotechnological processes. Data on the correlation between the chemical composition of spores, their ability to remain dormant, and the germination process are considered. Special biotechnological approaches are presented for the first; they allow for the preservation of the germinating ability of spores, intensification of sporogenesis, changes in the ratio of final fermentation products, and an increase in their yield.  相似文献

Polystyrene grafted with a chiral zinc‐complexing camphor‐derived N,N‐disubstituted hydroxyamide is proposed as a new type of functional polymer of high reusability for the development of sustainable organozinc‐catalyzed asymmetric reactions. The main goal of this new functional polymer is the ease of the hydroxyamide‐moiety preparation (cheap chiral ligand obtained straightforwardly from an enantiopure starting material coming from the chiral pool), as well as its chemical robustness when compared with other related zinc‐complexing functional groups. The latter allows the polymer to be active after multiple applications, without significant loss of its catalytic activity. This fact is exemplified by the design and preparation of a polymer functionalized with a bis(hydroxyamide) proved previously as active in the homogeneous enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. The result is a cheap functional polymer with a very high reusability (the enantioselectivity and chemical yield are maintained practically constant after 20 applications). This paper discusses an issue on the development of biophysical methods for biochip analysis. A scheme and construction of a biochip analyzer based on wide-field digital fluorescence microscopy are described. The analyzer is designed to register images of biological microchips labeled with fluorescent dyes. The device developed is useful for high-sensitive throughput recording analyses by biochips after interaction of immobilized probes with fluorescently labeled sample molecules as well as it provides the higher rate of the analysis compared to laser scanning devices. With this analyzer a scope where biological microchips can be applied becomes wider, the development of new protocols of the analyses is possible and standard analyses run faster with the use of biochips, the expenses for the analysis performance can be reduced.  相似文献

Ticks are serious health threats for humans, and both domestic and wild animals. Ticks are controlled mostly by application of chemical products; but these acaricides have several negative side effects, including toxicity to animals, environmental contamination, and induction of chemical resistance in some tick populations. Entomopathogenic fungi infect arthropods in nature and can occur at enzootic or epizootic levels in their host populations. Laboratory studies clearly demonstrate that these fungi can cause high mortality in all developmental stages of several tick species, and also reduce oviposition of infected engorged females. Tick mortality following application of fungi in the field, however, often is less than that suggested by laboratory tests. This is due to many negative biotic and climatic factors. To increase efficacy of fungal agents for biological control of ticks under natural conditions, several points need consideration: (1) select effective isolates (viz., high virulence; and tolerance to high temperature, ultraviolet radiation and desiccation); (2) understand the main factors that affect virulence of fungal isolates to their target arthropods including the role of toxic metabolites of the fungal isolates; and (3) define with more precision the immune response of ticks to infection by entomopathogenic fungi. The current study reviews recent literature on biological control of ticks, and comments on the relevance of these results to advancing the development of fungal biocontrol agents, including improving formulation of fungal spores for use in tick control, and using entomopathogenic fungi in integrated pest (tick) management programs.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of geological, hydrological, and anthropogenic factors in structuring periphytic algal assemblages in the rivers of the Lake Ladoga basin (Northwestern Russia). Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) conducted on spring dataset showed that water temperature, color, and river morphology were primary factors shaping the structure of algal assemblages during the spring post-flood period. CCA on summer and autumn dataset revealed that conductivity and total phosphorus were the most important variables during the base flow period. Cluster analysis carried out on algal assemblages separated all rivers into two main groups that corresponded to the two geomorphological regions of the Lake Ladoga basin: the northern and the southern sub-basins. The separation of the northern and the southern groups were best explained by the pattern of conductivity reflecting geological and land use differences in the watersheds. The values of the Specific Pollution sensitivity Index (IPS) and the Biological Diatom Index (IBD) were higher, indicating better water quality, for rivers of the northern sub-basin than for rivers of the southern sub-basin. Mean values of the IPS and IBD for rivers of the northern and the southern sub-basins varied within the boundaries of a good water quality.  相似文献

Several hypotheses have been proposed to account for the adaptive evolution of personality, defined as inter‐individual differences in behaviour that are consistent over time and across situations. For instance, the ‘pace‐of‐life syndrome’ hypothesis suggests that personality evolved as a behavioural correlate of life‐history trajectories that vary within populations. Thus, proactivity, corresponding to higher exploratory tendencies or higher boldness levels, has been linked to higher productivity or mortality rates. However, the extent to which proactivity is associated with a higher motivation to forage remains poorly understood. Moreover, although personality and its effects on foraging behaviour are usually considered to be independent of any motivational or nutritional state, few studies so far have challenged this. Here we show that personality traits, both individually or combined using a principal component analysis, and body condition have additive effects on latency to feed following food deprivation in the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata, with personality accounting for 41% and body condition for about 20% of the total variation in latency to feed. In accordance with the pace‐of‐life syndrome hypothesis, latency to feed was negatively related to the degree of proactivity and positively related to body condition. Thus, proactive individuals and individuals in poorer condition were quicker to start feeding after a period of food deprivation. The absence of a significant interaction between personality and body condition further suggests that the effect of personality was independent of body condition. We discuss the relevance of our results in relation to the different factors influencing foraging in birds. Moreover, we place our results within a life‐history framework by emphasizing the correlated evolution of life‐history traits and personality.  相似文献

Male and female European Robins Erithacus rubecula display their red breasts in year‐round territorial contests. Despite the clear signalling role of the red breast, little is known about its sexual dimorphism or trends in size when Robins age. We studied these patterns in resident and migrant Robins in a Mediterranean population. Both male and female first‐year Robins had smaller red breasts than second‐year individuals. Females, but not males, showed a reduction in badge area after the second year of life, leading to sexual dimorphism in red breast area in the oldest Robins. The grey fringe around the red breast showed a steady increase in width in males when ageing, but not in females, also leading to sexual dimorphism in this trait among oldest Robins. The contrast between the red breast and its surrounding grey fringe was higher than that between the breast and the back at both high and low environmental light intensities. This suggests that the grey fringe could function as a frame to highlight the perimeter of the red breast, and that the Robin’s plumage is equally suited to display in open areas and forest understoreys. Our study suggests that the extent of the red breast and its grey frame could confer information about the age and sex of the birds, and thus be used as a signal in territorial contests and mating decisions.  相似文献

ΔN123-glucan-binding domain-catalytic domain 2 (ΔN123-GBD-CD2) is a truncated form of the bifunctional glucansucrase DSR-E from Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-1299. It was constructed by rational truncation of GBD-CD2, which harbors the second catalytic domain of DSR-E. Like GBD-CD2, this variant displays α-(1→2) branching activity when incubated with sucrose as glucosyl donor and (oligo-)dextran as acceptor, transferring glucosyl residues to the acceptor via a ping-pong bi-bi mechanism. This allows the formation of prebiotic molecules containing controlled amounts of α-(1→2) linkages. The crystal structure of the apo α-(1→2) branching sucrase ΔN123-GBD-CD2 was solved at 1.90 Å resolution. The protein adopts the unusual U-shape fold organized in five distinct domains, also found in GTF180-ΔN and GTF-SI glucansucrases of glycoside hydrolase family 70. Residues forming subsite −1, involved in binding the glucosyl residue of sucrose and catalysis, are strictly conserved in both GTF180-ΔN and ΔN123-GBD-CD2. Subsite +1 analysis revealed three residues (Ala-2249, Gly-2250, and Phe-2214) that are specific to ΔN123-GBD-CD2. Mutation of these residues to the corresponding residues found in GTF180-ΔN showed that Ala-2249 and Gly-2250 are not directly involved in substrate binding and regiospecificity. In contrast, mutant F2214N had lost its ability to branch dextran, although it was still active on sucrose alone. Furthermore, three loops belonging to domains A and B at the upper part of the catalytic gorge are also specific to ΔN123-GBD-CD2. These distinguishing features are also proposed to be involved in the correct positioning of dextran acceptor molecules allowing the formation of α-(1→2) branches.  相似文献

Plant architecture highly constrains pest infestation but is rarely considered in studies on plant–insect interactions. We analysed the relationships between apple tree architectural traits manipulated by tree training and within-branch development of Dysaphis plantaginea (rosy apple aphid, RAA), a major apple pest, during its multiplication wingless phase in spring. We hypothesised that the degree of branching had an effect on RAA within-branch infestation. In an experimental apple orchard, the infestation by aphid wingless forms was surveyed in two consecutive spring seasons within branches manipulated to design contrasted architectures differing in shoot numbers, shoot density and branching orders. Whatever the branch management system, aphid infestation was higher on long versus short, fruiting versus vegetative, and growing versus non-growing shoots. Either less infested shoots or less severe infestation were observed in the most branched system. A pattern of within-branch short-distance infestation was confirmed. Moreover, the number of branching points between two shoots exerted a high constraint on this infestation pattern. Beside possible trophic effects due to plant growth patterns already documented in the literature, a high degree of branching is likely to be a key-architectural trait to constrain within-branch aphid infestation. This opens new perspectives on the manipulation of branch architecture as a mean giving partial control of pests towards sustainable fruit production.  相似文献
