1. Parasitoids are a valuable group for conservation biological control. In their role as regulators of aphid pests, it is critical that their lifecycle is synchronised with their hosts in both space and time. This is because a synchronised parasitoid community is more likely to strengthen the overall conservation biological control effect, thus damping aphid numbers and preventing potential outbreaks. One component of this host–parasitoid system was examined, that of migration, and the hypothesis that peak summer parasitoid and host migrations are synchronised in time was tested. 2. Sitobion avenae Fabricius and six associated parasitoids were sampled from 1976 to 2013 using 12.2‐m suction‐traps from two sites in Southern England. The relationship between peak weekly S. avenae counts and their parasitoids was quantified. 3. Simple regression models showed that the response of the peak parasitoids to the host was positive: generally, more parasitoids migrated with increasing numbers of aphids. Further, when averaged over time, the parasitoid migration peak date corresponded with the aphid migration peak. The co‐occurrence of the peaks was between 51% and 64%. However, the summer peak in aphid migration is not steadily shifting forward with time unlike spring first flights of aphids. Cross‐correlation analysis showed that there were no between‐year lagged effects of aphids on parasitoids. 4. These results demonstrate that the peak in migration phenology between host and parasitoid is broadly synchronised within a season. Because the threshold temperature for flight (> 12 °C) was almost always exceeded in summer, the synchronising agent is likely to be crop senescence, not temperature. Studies are needed to assess the effects of climate change on the mismatch potential between parasitoids and their hosts.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. When batches of about 100 moths of mixed age and sex were kept at 25°C, 65±5%r.h., few eggs were laid by Ephestia cautella, E.kuehniella, E.elutella and Corcyra cephalonica while they were exposed to light of 400-1000lx for up to 12h. Large numbers were laid soon after the light was switched off, however, and the yield during the first hour of darkness increased as the period previously spent in light increased from 1 to 18h. Plodia interpunctella , on the other hand, laid many eggs in light and the numbers laid subsequently during the first hour of darkness in the Slough stock were not influenced by the duration of the light exposure. In LD 12:12, the first four species laid most of their eggs during the scotophase, with E.cautella laying the largest number and E.elutella the smallest. E.cautella transferred from LD 12:12 to constant darkness showed a free-running circadian rhythm for at least three cycles, with most eggs laid near the time that was previously the first hour of darkness, but those transferred to constant light free-ran for only one cycle.  相似文献

Two diffusion porometers of different design, dynamic and steady-state,were used to measure diffusive conductance of wheat leaves inthe field. The two values of conductance measured for each leafwere compared by two statistical methods which revealed a systematicdifference of between 20 and 30% between the measurements. Randomdeviations from this averaged around 35%. The cause of the systematicdifference is not known, but was considered unlikely to be theresult of rapid stomatal response to abnormal exposure withinthe instruments. It must therefore come from a systematic errorin one or both instruments or be a consequence of the differentprinciples of operation. The random variation was found to bea combination of the random errors inherent in the measurementof relative humidity in both instruments plus a similar contributionfrom the variation in leaf diffusive conductance measured atdifferent points on the leaf.  相似文献

  • 1 Patterns of vertical habitat use of ten species of cockroaches are examined. Three assemblages of cockroaches are recognized on the basis of morphology, foraging behaviour, foraging heights, and overlaps and breadths of vertical distributions.
  • 2 Three apterous and brachypterous species occur near the ground and comprise one assemblage. They feed mainly on material in the leaf-litter.
  • 3 Species that perch higher either migrate into the leaf-litter on a diel basis and feed on both leaf-litter and epiphyllic materials, or some are strictly arboreal and forage on algae, liverworts, lichens, spores, pollen and trichomes on the surfaces of leaves.
  • 4 Trophic and behavioural correlations with perch height are described and the functions of perching are examined.
  • 5 We conclude that studies of interactions among species are confounded by our lack of understanding of stage- and sex-specific interactions of coexisting species. A simplistic ‘species’approach to such interactions is inadequate because it does not recognize intraspecific variation.

Monitoring and understanding global change requires a detailed focus on upscaling, the process for extrapolating from the site‐specific scale to the smallest scale resolved in regional or global models or earth observing systems. Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most sensitive determinants of plant production and can vary by an order of magnitude over short distances. The landscape distribution of LAI is generally determined by remote sensing of surface reflectance (e.g. normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) but the mismatch in scales between ground and satellite measurements complicates LAI upscaling. Here, we describe a series of measurements to quantify the spatial distribution of LAI in a sub‐Arctic landscape and then describe the upscaling process and its associated errors. Working from a fine‐scale harvest LAI–NDVI relationship, we collected NDVI data over a 500 m × 500 m catchment in the Swedish Arctic, at resolutions from 0.2 to 9.0 m in a nested sampling design. NDVI scaled linearly, so that NDVI at any scale was a simple average of multiple NDVI measurements taken at finer scales. The LAI–NDVI relationship was scale invariant from 1.5 to 9.0 m resolution. Thus, a single exponential LAI–NDVI relationship was valid at all these scales, with similar prediction errors. Vegetation patches were of a scale of ~0.5 m and at measurement scales coarser than this, there was a sharp drop in LAI variance. Landsat NDVI data for the study catchment correlated significantly, but poorly, with ground‐based measurements. A variety of techniques were used to construct LAI maps, including interpolation by inverse distance weighting, ordinary Kriging, External Drift Kriging using Landsat data, and direct estimation from a Landsat NDVI–LAI calibration. All methods produced similar LAI estimates and overall errors. However, Kriging approaches also generated maps of LAI estimation error based on semivariograms. The spatial variability of this Arctic landscape was such that local measurements assimilated by Kriging approaches had a limited spatial influence. Over scales >50 m, interpolation error was of similar magnitude to the error in the Landsat NDVI calibration. The characterisation of LAI spatial error in this study is a key step towards developing spatio‐temporal data assimilation systems for assessing C cycling in terrestrial ecosystems by combining models with field and remotely sensed data.  相似文献

Background

Prenatal screening for Down Syndrome (DS) would benefit from an increased number of biomarkers to improve sensitivity and specificity. Improving sensitivity and specificity would decrease the need for potentially risky invasive diagnostic procedures.

Results

We have performed an in depth two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D DIGE) study to identify potential biomarkers. We have used maternal plasma samples obtained from first and second trimesters from mothers carrying DS affected fetuses compared with mothers carrying normal fetuses. Plasma samples were albumin/IgG depleted and expanded pH ranges of pH 4.5 - 5.5, pH 5.3 - 6.5 and pH 6 - 9 were used for two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE). We found no differentially expressed proteins in the first trimester between the two groups. Significant up-regulation of ceruloplasmin, inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain H4, complement proteins C1s subcomponent, C4-A, C5, and C9 and kininogen 1 were detected in the second trimester in maternal plasma samples where a DS affected fetus was being carried. However, ceruloplasmin could not be confirmed as being consistently up-regulated in DS affected pregnancies by Western blotting.

Conclusions

Despite the in depth 2DE approach used in this study the results underline the deficiencies of gel-based proteomics for detection of plasma biomarkers. Gel-free approaches may be more productive to increase the number of plasma biomarkers for DS for non-invasive prenatal screening and diagnosis.  相似文献
