The high plant diversity of mediterranean-climate regions has attracted much attention over the past few years. This review discusses patterns and determinants of local, differential and regional plant diversity in all five regions. Local diversity shows great variation within and between regions and explanations for these patterns invoke a wide range of hypotheses. Patterns of regional diversity are the result of differential speciation and extinction rates during the Quaternary. These rates have been influenced more by the incidence of fire and the severity of climate change than by environmental heterogeneity. All regions have a high number of rare and locally endemic taxa that survive as small populations, many of which are threatened by habitat transformation.  相似文献

Since 1991 the NHS has attempted to identify and prioritise its needs for research and development in a systematic manner. This has not been done before and there is little evidence on which to draw. Multidisciplinary expert groups have identified priorities in different topics using explicit criteria and after widespread consultation within the NHS and research community to identify pressing problems and opportunities for research. This paper focuses on a review completed in 1993 to identify research and development priorities for the NHS in relation to the interface between primary and secondary care. The review covered several recent developments which require evaluation. The authors describe the process used to identify research and development priorities in this complex subject and examine the strengths and weaknesses of the approach. This case study should help to stimulate a wider debate on methods of identifying priorities, particularly those using participatory approaches, in research and non-research contexts.  相似文献

The model of the interaction between Na and alanine at the mucosal border of rabbit ileum has been tested further by examining the efflux of alanine from the cells toward the mucosal solution. Alanine efflux shows a tendency toward saturation as cellular alanine concentration increases and is influenced by cellular Na concentration. A decrease in cell Na concentration causes an increase in the apparent Michaelis constant with little change in maximal efflux rate. Studies on strips of mucosa treated with ouabain or cyanide showed that the direction of net alanine transfer between the cells and the medium is determined by the direction of the Na concentration difference. The cells extrude alanine against a concentration difference when cell [Na] exceeds medium [Na] and accumulate alanine when cell [Na] is less than medium [Na]. The observations are consistent with the model previously suggested involving a transport site that combines with and translocates both Na and alanine, and with the concept that the Na concentration difference between mucosal solution and cytoplasm provides at least part of the energy for active transport of alanine.  相似文献

Follow-up studies of findings obtained during a short programme of biochemical screening conducted on 1,041 patients attending their general practitioners in January 1967 showed that this yielded 64 results that led to a change in diagnosis or method of treatment. These results were obtained in 57 patients (5·5% of patients screened), whereas only 15 abnormal results would have been revealed on 14 of the 1,041 patients if the tests performed had been restricted to those requested on the basis of clinical features. Hence a screening programme can make an important contribution to the recognition of otherwise unsuspected disease.  相似文献

A genomic library of Streptococcus sanguis, strain G9B, was constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli using a lambda gt11 expression vector. The amplified library was probed with polyclonal anti-G9B IgG and 13 antigen-positive clones were isolated. A lysate of one clone, designated PP39, absorbed the adhesion-inhibitory activity of anti-G9B IgG. This clone contained an insert of approximately 2000 bp and expressed unique 200 and 53 kDa proteins that reacted with monospecific anti-adhesin antibody. The 200 kDa protein also reacted with anti-beta-galactosidase IgG, indicating that it is a fusion protein of which 84 kDa represents the streptococcal adhesin. The 84 and 53 kDa proteins are similar in size to the major polypeptides in a streptococcal antigen complex which is associated with the adhesion of G9B to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite. The 53 kDa fragment may result from post-translational cleavage of the recombinant polypeptide.  相似文献

Summary The delayed amelanotic (DAM) line of chickens (Gallus gallus) is characterized by the postnatal elimination of melanocytes from regenerating feathers and from the choroid. The process of elimination is accompanied by a massive infiltration of mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) into the supporting connective tissues. When surgically bursectomized at day of hatching, chickens from this lineage develop significantly less amelanosis of the feathers. We report here a histological analysis of regenerating feathers and choroids from bursectomized birds that maintained their plumage pigmentation. In the feathers we observed the presence of morphologically abnormal melanocytes in the absence of MNL infiltration. Choroids also contained abnormal melanocytes without MNL infiltration; however, we observed a few cases of amelanotic choroids with a few MNL. These findings indicate that melanocytes of pigmented birds are morphologically abnormal even in the absence of a bursa and in the absence of leukocytic infiltrates into regenerating feathers and possibly into the choroids. We conclude from these findings that the amelanosis in unbursectomized DAM birds is due to the response of the immune system to an abnormality in the melanocytes which, by itself, does not lead to depigmentation.  相似文献

Mutations affecting pigmentation of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. 6701 were induced with ultraviolet light. Two mutants with phycobilisome structural changes were selected for structural studies. One mutant, UV08, was defective in chromatic adaptation and incorporated phycoerythrin into phycobilisomes in white or red light at a level typical of growth in green light. The other mutant, UV16, was defective in phycobilisome assembly: little phycocyanin was made and none was attached to the phycobilisome cores. The cores were completely free of any rod substructures and contained the major core peptides plus the 27,000 Mr linker peptide that attaches rods to the core. Micrographs of the core particles established their structural details. Phycoerythrin in UV 16 was assembled into rod structures that were not associated with core material or phycocyanin. The 30,500 Mr and 31,500 Mr linker peptides were present in the phycoerythrin rods with the 30,500 Mr protein as the major component.
