Intact rich fen soil cores with controlled water levels near thesurface were installed in an open greenhouse. To simulate short termsummer drought, water levels were lowered (20 cm) after two weeks inhalf of the cores (experimental cores) and remained near the surface inthe other half (blanks). After two more weeks, the water levels werebrought back to the surface in the experimental cores and remainedthere for another two weeks. In the blanks, reduction and alkalinizationof the top peat layer occurred. In the experimental soil cores oxidationand acidification started within one week after drawdown. An indicationfor a drought induced rise in soluble reactive phosphorus has beenfound. The velocity of the acidification process illustrates the dynamicnature of the hydrochemical conditions in fen soils during drought. Theprocesses controlling the acid/base status of rich fen, the effect ofdrought induced acidification on P availability and the significance forthe vegetation are discussed.  相似文献

  • 1 The pay-off from an egg laid in a parasitized host is an important parameter in models on adaptive superparasitism in solitary insect parasitoids.
  • 2 For Leptopilina heterotoma, a parasitoid of larval Drosophila, the pay-off from a second egg laid in a host is 0.43 offspring when the interval between the two ovipositions is less than 3h. For longer intervals, this pay-off decreases to almost zero for an interval of 24 h.
  • 3 When a female encountering a parasitized host is able to estimate the interval since the first oviposition, it is expected that she will take this into account in her host selection decisions. This is, however, not in the direct interest of the female that lays the first egg, and marks the host.
  • 4 We studied whether superparasitism in hosts containing a young egg is more common than in hosts containing an older egg, when searching in a patch containing once-parasitized and unparasitized hosts.
  • 5 The acceptance/encounter ratio of parasitized hosts increased for intervals longer than 6h, as predicted when the interests of the marking female and the longevity of the mark are taken into account.
  • 6 Superparasitism occurred more often when parasitoids had previously searched a host patch 7 days before the experiment compared to when parasitoids had searched a patch 1 day before, a phenomenon predicted by dynamic optimal diet models.

Bryophytes live in microhabitats determined by the physical environment, usually modified by the vascular plant vegetation, and seemingly in 'ecological isolation' from other plants.
However, bryophytes are involved in a variety of competitive, parasitic, symbiotic, mutualistic and as yet unspecifiable interactions with vascular plants, algae, fungi, lichens, cyanobactcria and autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria. In only very few cases have these interactions been analysed functionally. Yet, such information may be essential for a better understanding of (1) such aspects of bryophyte ecology as mineral nutrition, carbon economy, herbivory, and growth and development of the gametophyte, and (2) the ecological role of bryophytes in terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

Lipid and Fatty Acid Composition of Tree-Growing and Terrestrial Lichens   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A comparison of lipid and fatty acid composition was made of the tree-growing lichens Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach., Parmelia saxatilis (L.) Ach. and Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Ach. and the terrestrial species Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach. and Cladonia impexa Harm. In the terrestrial species the total lipid content varied strongly during spring, while the tree-growing species showed much less variation. Phospholipid and sterol content of all lichens was unusually low. Monoglycosyl diglyceride was absent from Parmelia saxatilis. Fatty acids common to higher plants as palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid were invariably present in all lichen species. In addition large quantities of extra-long chain fatty acids like behenic acid, eicosadienoic acid and cyclic aliphatic lichen acids were present in the terrestrial species. The degree of (poly) unsaturation decreased in the order Evernia prunastri, Parmelia saxatilis. Fatty acids common to higher plants as palmitic, stearic, impexa, which decrease was compensated by an increase in extralong chain fatty acids and lichen acids. It is suggested that the lichen acids are of adaptive value for lichen species growing in the terrestrial habitats, which were characterized by extreme diurnal temperature variations. Just as the polyunsaturated fatty acids, lichen acids guarantee at lower temperatures a high flexibility of the membranes involved, at the same time as they are less susceptible to photo-oxidation at the high daytime temperatures.  相似文献

The adult annual survival rate of breeding Blue Tits Parus caeruleus decreased from 0.485 to 0.376 after a pair of Sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus started to breed in the study plot in 1990, whereas in two neighbouring plots, survival rates did not change. This decrease was likely caused by the Sparrowhawk predation mainly in spring. Although the size of the Blue Tit breeding population did not decrease, there remained fewer nonbreeding floaters, and as a result, replacement polygyny became more common.  相似文献

The propagation of light inside a canopy depends on the structureand optical properties of the foliage, and is studied here forthe case of randomly distributed horizontal flat leaves withany specified reflection and transmission coefficients. Theproportions of the incident light which emerge from the topand base of the canopy and enter the leaves in the flecked andshaded regions of the foliage at any depth are expressed mathematicallyfor any mixture of diffuse and parallel incident light. Therates of photosynthesis in the flecked and shaded regions arecomputed for various values of the reflection and transmissioncoefficients and their sum is compared with the rate of photosynthesiscomputed on the assumption that light at each depth in the canopyis evenly distributed. Taxonomy:  Cladosporium fulvum is an asexual fungus for which no sexual stage is currently known. Molecular data, however, support C. fulvum as a member of the Mycosphaerellaceae, clustering with other taxa having Mycosphaerella teleomorphs . C. fulvum has recently been placed in the anamorph genus Passalora as P. fulva . Its taxonomic disposition is supported by its DNA phylogeny, as well as the distinct scars on its conidial hila, which are typical of Passalora , and unlike Cladosporium s.s. , which has teleomorphs that reside in Davidiella , and not Mycosphaerella .
Host range and disease symptoms:  The presently known sole host of C. fulvum is tomato (members of the genus Lycopersicon ). C. fulvum is mainly a foliar pathogen. Disease symptoms are most obvious on the abaxial side of the leaf and include patches of white mould that turn brown upon sporulation. Due to stomatal clogging, curling of leaves and wilting can occur, leading to defoliation.
C. fulvum as a model pathogen:  The interaction between C. fulvum and tomato is governed by a gene-for-gene relationship. A total of eight Avr and Ecp genes, and for four of these also the corresponding plant Cf genes, have been cloned. Obtaining conclusive evidence for gene-for-gene relationships is complicated by the poor availability of genetic tools for most Mycosphaerellaceae – plant interactions. Newly developed tools, including Agrobacterium -mediated transformation and RNAi, added to the genome sequence of its host tomato, which will be available within a few years, render C. fulvum attractive as a model species for plant pathogenic Mycosphaerellaceae.

Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified in the tropical plant Vasconcellea ×heilbornii and used to estimate allelic diversity in two populations of southern Ecuador. Allelic richness ranged from two to five alleles, observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.150 to 0.947 and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.186 to 0.701. Most of these markers also amplified microsatellite loci in two other Vasconcellea species (Vasconcellea stipulata and Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis). Hence, these markers will be useful for population genetic analysis and the evaluation of genetic diversity and gene flow in these species.  相似文献
