Multiple associations of fossil snails with dinosaur coprolites demonstrate that snails and dinosaurs not only shared ancient habitats but were trophically linked via dinosaur dung. Over 130 fossil snails representing at least seven different taxa have been found on or within herbivorous dinosaur coprolites from the Upper Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of Montana. The terrestrial snail Megomphix is the most common taxon, but three other terrestrial taxa (Prograngerella, Hendersonia and Polygyrella) and three aquatic snails (Lioplacodes, ?Viviparus and a physid) also occur in coprolites. At least 46% of the shells in the faeces are whole or nearly so, indicating that most (if not all) of the snails were not ingested by dinosaurs, but were post‐depositional visitors to the dung pats. The sizeable, moist and microbially enriched dinosaur faeces would have provided both food and roosting sites for the ancient snails, and the large number of snail–coprolite associations reflect recurring, opportunistic exploitation of dung. The terrestrial taxa in the coprolites suggest that this Late Cretaceous locality included sufficiently moist detrital or vegetative cover for snails when dinosaur dung was not present. The aquatic snails probably entered the faeces during flood events. Dinosaur dung would have provided an abundant but patchy influx of resources that was probably seasonally available in the ancient environment. 相似文献

Climate change impacts are becoming increasingly evident as 1 °C warming above pre-industrial temperatures is approached. One of the signature biological effects is a shift towards earlier-timed reproduction. If individual species lack sufficient adaptive plasticity to alter phenology, they will have reduced fitness in a hotter world. Yet, a long-term study of an oak–caterpillar–songbird–sparrowhawk food web reveals that what could matter as much is if trophic interactions are disrupted. Multiple selective pressures may be triggered by climate change, leading to a tug-of-war between the need to stay in synchrony with the timing of maximum food, and the benefits of minimizing predation. 相似文献

The abundance of two native rodent species, Rattus lutreolus and Pseudomys gracilicaudatus, has been shown to correlate with vegetation density in coastal wet heath. Fox's habitat accommodation model relates relative abundances of such small mammal species to heathland vegetation regeneration following disturbance. Implicit in the model is recognition that it is successional changes in vegetation, not time per se, that drives the responses of small mammal species along a regeneration axis. Using a brush‐cutter we deliberately removed approximately 85% of vegetation around trapping stations and recorded significant reductions in the abundance of both P. gracilicaudatus (an earlier‐stage colonizing species) and R. lutreolus (a late seral‐stage species). A significant decrease in the abundance of only the latter had been demonstrated previously when 60–70% of the vegetation had been removed. Following the brush‐cutting both species re‐entered the mammalian secondary succession at different times, first P. gracilicaudatus followed by R. lutreolus after the vegetation cover thresholds of each species had been reached. The impact of this habitat manipulation experiment was to produce a retrogression of the small mammal succession, experimentally demonstrating causality between changes in vegetation density and subsequent small mammal habitat use. 相似文献

The sensory systems employed by animals to locate potential mates are diverse. Among insects, chemical and acoustic signals are commonly used over long distances, with visual signals playing a role in close-range orientation and courtship. Within groups that exhibit a scramble competition mating system, selection on mate searching ability will be particularly strong. Clearly, aspects of the species ecology, such as habitat complexity and population density, will be crucial in the evolution of mate searching systems and sexual signals. Praying mantids exhibit both chemical and visual sexual signalling behaviour, and also vary in their ecology. This study employs scanning electron microscopy of antennal sensory morphology and behavioural assays to investigate the relative importance of chemical and visual signalling in two Australian praying mantid species: Pseudomantis albofimbriata and Ciulfina biseriata . As predicted, the high level of habitat complexity, low population density and strong male dispersal capability of P. albofimbriata corresponded to the use of airborne sex pheromones. Populations of the syntopic rock hyrax, Procavia capensis (Pallas), and yellow-spotted rock hyrax, Heterohyrax brucei (Gray), in the 42,400-ha Matobo National Park (MNP), Zimbabwe, were characterized from 1992 to 1996. The Procavia:Heterohyrax species ratio varied significantly ( P < 0.01) across years from 1.43:1.00 to 0.74:1.00. Estimates of abundance (31,114–39,869 Procavia and 21,833–46,619 Heterohyrax ) and densities (0.73–0.94 Procavia ha−1 and 0.51–1.10 Heterohyrax ha−1 ) indicated that populations had experienced a considerable decline since 1978, with drought suspected as the principal cause. The Heterohyrax population fluctuated more than the Procavia population. Although sex ratios of individuals trapped and collected in 1991–92 did not differ from 1:1 for either species, female Procavia nearly outnumbered males ( P < 0.10) among the prey of black eagles ( Aquila verreauxii Lesson), suggesting the possibility of divergence in the social organization and vigilance of the two species. In each year of the study, pups comprised < 30% of individuals in the two populations after the interspecifically synchronous annual birth event in March–April, and evidence exists for an effect by drought on fecundity. Females appear to breed, on average, no more than every other year. We estimated juvenile (0–1 year of age) mortality at 52.4–61.3% for Heterohyrax and 59.6–75.6% for Procavia . Mean mass (±1 SE) of Procavia adults was 3.4±0.2 kg and of Heterohyrax adults, 2.4±0.1 kg. Procavia had a significantly ( P < 0.01) greater condition index (body mass/total length) than Heterohyrax . Adults are especially important reservoirs of biomass for the diverse and numerous predators of the MNP, accounting for > 84% of hyrax biomass intraspecifically. 相似文献

1. Periphyton species composition, chlorophyll a concentration, organic matter biomass, and metabolic activity were analysed at a site in a regulated river with low nutrient concentrations to investigate population and community level responses to a spatial gradient in hydraulic conditions. The communities were dominated by diatoms over the full hydraulic range [0.1–0.5m depth, 0.1–1.5ms?1 velocity, and 0.01–1.5 Froude number (Fr)] with Cymbella kappii, Synedra ulna, and Gomphoneis herculeana having the highest relative biovolumes. 2. Unexpectedly, Cymbella kappii and Synedra ulna were abundant or co-dominant at all levels of velocity and Fr. Gomphoneis herculeana was most abundant within the mid-velocity range (velocity = 0.8–1.2ms?1). 3. The physiognomy of the communities changed with a change in hydraulic conditions. There was progressively more diatom mucilage as velocity and Fr increased which resulted in a macroscopic change from relatively thin films (1–2mm) at low velocities and Fr (in pool habitats), to thick (approximately 10mm) mats at higher velocities and Fr (in riffle habitats). Associated with this, ash-free dry mass (APDM) increased strongly, but chlorophyll a concentration did not, resulting in a decrease in % chlorophyll a over the gradient. 4. The results of experiments conducted in an in situ benthic chamber showed no significant differences in gross primary production between two communities of different biomass, but indicated a slightly decreasing trend with increasing velocity (0.14 to 0.38 ms?1). In contrast, community respiration increased greatly with mat biomass and also as a function of increased water velocity. The combined AFDM, chlorophyll a and metabolic results indicated that the zone of photosynthesis was maintained at the surface of the mats, with variable amounts of mucilage being secreted below, depending on hydraulic conditions. 5. The diatom community had considerable physiognomic plasticity through the accumulation of mucilage. It is suggested that this high mucilage secretion may be an active feedback mechanism to help ameliorate environmental stress. If so, present theory on velocity control of periphytic algal development in streams, which is essentially based on passive responses, needs expanding. It is concluded that the response of periphyton to spatial differences in habitat hydraulics in streams is highly complex and it may be difficult to define clear hydraulic habitat preference curves for periphyton communities in nutrient-poor streams. 相似文献

Muscle spindles and tendon organs occur in most somatic musclesof the mammal and are particularly concentrated in muscles subservingfine movements, including postural muscles and small musclesof the distal extremities. In those mixed muscles in which thedifferent fiber and motor unit types are "compartmentalized,"the spindles, and perhaps tendon organs also, are virtuallylimited to those compartments predominated by "oxidative" musclefibers. These morphological observations based on a broad arrayof muscles in many species, complement electrophysiologicalstudies which have emphasized that (1) the "oxidative" motorunits have low reflex thresholds and (2) segmental proprioceptivereflexes may be primarily concerned with the control of finelygraded contractions. Consideration of the functional anatomyof the association between motor units and muscle receptorssuggests the need for detailed structural-functional analysesof those muscles with specializations in architecture, fiber-typecomposition and distribution, and in the number and distributionof their muscle spindles and tendon organs. An electrophysiologicalanalysis of the relationship between the spinal cord and suchmuscles might also reveal certain strategies and mechanismsunderlying segmental motor control which are either absent orobscured in the analysis of that select number of "homogenously-mixed"muscles conventionally used in the study of the mammalian segmentalmotor control system. 相似文献

Sixteen 1-ha study plots covering five regeneration stages were simultaneously trapped five times over a 20-month period to provide data on small mammal response to vegetation changes following fire. Areas regenerating after fires from 9 years to 1 month before the investigation were sampled in a uniform open forest on a coastal sand plain. Two types of understorey were recognized: one dominated by true forest shrubs with which Rattus fuscipes, Antechinus stuartii and Sminthopsis murina were associated, and another dominated by heath elements where the addition of Pseudomys novaehollandiae and Mus musculus produced a significantly more diverse small mammal community. The two communities exhibited different responses to post-fire vegetation changes. Rattus fuscipes was the most abundant species and showed a logistic growth in biomass. No resident populations were established in the first 3 years, but a rapid increase in biomass occurred from 3 to 5 years to plateau after 8 years. Regeneration age had the greatest effect on R. fuscipes biomass mediated through the amount of accumulated leaf litter with additional variation being attributed to several vegetation structure variables and plant species diversity. A replacement sequence in time was observed for species reaching their maximum abundance (P. novaehollandiae and/or M. musculus → S. murina → A. stuartii → R. fuscipes) and was interpreted as species occupying stages in the succession when their optimal habitat requirements were fulfilled. These results have important implications for the design of management policies using fire or fire regimes as tools for habitat maintenance or alteration. A mosaic of forest patches of adequate size covering the entire range of seral stages is necessary to meet the optimum requirements of all the above species. 相似文献
