The effects of infection with potato leafroll virus (PLRV) on the four crop processes leading to tuber fresh weight yield were examined in field plots of four cultivars (Montana, Pentland Crown, Maris Piper and King Edward) differing in tolerance to infection. Averaged across cultivars, infection decreased yield by 50%. This decrease was equally due to less light (total solar radiation) being intercepted, a lower efficiency with which intercepted light was converted into dry weight, and a smaller proportion of dry weight being partitioned to tubers. Dry matter content of the tubers was also diminished but to a lesser extent. The main difference between the cultivars in their response to infection was in the partitioning of dry weight. In Montana and Pentland Crown, harvest index was decreased by 15% in infected plants, whereas in the less tolerant cultivars, Maris Piper and King Edward, it was decreased by 25%. The decline in photosynthetic performance of Montana, a cultivar with slightly earlier maturity than the other three, was delayed in PLRV-infected plants. Effects on number of daughter tubers essentially reflected those on yield to the extent that average tuber weight did not change in Maris Piper, was one third less in King Edward, and the change was intermediate in Montana and Pentland Crown.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Competitive interactions among larvae of Drosophila species using the same habitat will usually involve individuals varying in age and size. Older, larger larvae might be expected to outcompete younger, smaller larvae.
  • 2 Newly hatched laryae of Drosophila aldrichi and D.buzzatii were placed on induced cactus necroses (simulating the natural habitat), either simultaneously, or with a 1 or 2 day difference in the time at which individuals of the other species were added.
  • 3 Evidence for competitive differences with larval age were found. In both species, body weight was significantly higher for those larvae added first than for later addition larvae, and a longer time to complete development was required for those larvae added 2 days later. However, pre-adult viability of D.aldrichi was significantly higher for larvae started 1 or 2 days after larvae of D.buzzatii. For D.buzzatii, viability was lowest for larvae started simultaneously with D.aldrichi, but not different between those started either before or after D.aldrichi.
  • 4 Considering all three traits, no clear advantage for the early addition larvae was observed.

When specifically labelled glucose was fed to strawberry leaves, the C6/C1, quotient (rate of release of 14CO2 from glucose-6-14C/rateof release of 14CO2 from glucose-114C ranged from 0.27 to 0.35in leaves in water and from 0.46 to 0.96 in leaves fed withiodoacetate. These quotients indicate that both the glycolyticand the pentose phosphate pathways participate in the respirationof strawberry leaves, with a greater contribution from the formerin the iodoacetate increased CO2 output. Concurrently with the increase of CO2 output in iodoacetate, the contents of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), fructose-6 (F6P)and fructose-1,6-diphosphate (FDP) increased greatly; therewas a smaller increase of phosphoenol-pyruvate (PEP). The increasein the CO2 output in iodoacetate may be explained solely onthe basis that the increases of G6P and FDP accelerate the ratesrespectively of the pentose phosphate pathway and of glycolysisand traffic into the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The increasein content of G6P and FDP is attributed to an increase in theaccessibility of enzymes and substrates caused by iodoacetate.Alternatively the increased CO2 output in iodoacetate may bepartly due to uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.  相似文献

The potato cv. Igor is susceptible to infection with Potato virus Y (PVY) and in Slovenia it has been so severely affected with NTN isolates of PVY causing potato tuber necrotic ringspot disease (PTNRD) that its cultivation has ceased. Plants of cv. Igor were transformed with two transgenes that contained coat protein gene sequence of PVYNTN. Both transgenes used PVY sequence in a sense (+) orientation, one in native translational context (N‐CP), and one with a frame‐shift mutation (FS‐CP). Although most transgenic lines were susceptible to infection with PVYNTN and PVYO, several lines showed resistance that could be classified into two types. Following manual or graft inoculation, plants of partially resistant lines developed some symptoms in foliage and tubers, and virus titre in the foliage, estimated by ELISA, was low or undetectable. In highly resistant (R) lines, symptoms did not develop in foliage and on tubers, and virus could not be detected in foliage by ELISA or infectivity assay. Four lines from 34 tested (two N‐CP and two FS‐CP) were R to PVYNTN and PVYO and one additional line was R to PVYO. When cv. Spey was transformed with the same constructs, they did not confer strong resistance to PVYO.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Cladocerans are generally believed to exhibit environmental sex determination; however, the evidence for this assertion is equivocal. Particularly, no studies have been performed which isolate potential effects of the environment on the sex of offspring (and hence sex ratio) from effects on the induction of sex (with the necessary appearance of males). We report the findings of a study of Daphnia magna Straus which is able to make this distinction.
2. We examined the sexes of broods produced by asexually reproducing females collected from high and low densities of D. magna in naturally occurring populations. We looked for an effect of density, a factor frequently implicated in male induction, on offspring sex.
3. We could find no effect of density on brood sex. Our results may indicate a true absence of interaction or may arise from our sampling procedure obscuring an interaction. More detailed field observations are suggested as a means of further examining the role of density in sex determination in Cladocera.  相似文献
