ANGIOTENSIN II, a circulating peptide which regulates electrolyte balance by controlling the adrenal release of aldosterone, may also act on the central nervous system. The reported central effects include elevations of blood pressure1–6, drinking behaviour7–11, adrenocorticotrophic hormone release12,13 and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) release5,14,15. The evidence for ADH release from the supraoptico-neurohypophysial system is based on studies involving the parenteral and intraventricular administration of angiotensin II. These routes of administration make an exact localization of the releasing action impossible and therefore we have attempted to locate the site by applying angiotensin II directly to individual supraoptic neurosecretory cells. We now report that angiotensin II increases the discharge rate of these and other neurones in the supraoptic nucleus. 相似文献

The accumulation of [3H]homocholine (3-trimethylamino-propan-1-01) by isolated synaptosomes prepared from rat brain was resolved kinetically into a high (KT= 3.0 μM) and a low (KT= 14.5 μM) affinity system. Although homocholine was not acetylated by solubilized choline acetyltransferase, 64% of the homocholine accumulated by intact synaptosomes via the high affinity uptake process was acetylated. Homocholine was also acetylated in the superior cervical ganglion of the cat, and the amount of acetylhomocholine formed was increased (12-fold) by preganglionic nerve stimulation. In ganglia, acetylhomocholine was available for release by preganglionic nerve impulses, and its release was Ca2+-dependent, It is concluded that homocholine can form a cholinergic false transmitter, and that the substrate specificity of choline acetyltransferase in vitro might be different from that in situ. 相似文献

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen is responsible for widespread changes in the structure and function of sensitive seminatural ecosystems. The proposed reduction in emissions of nitrogenous pollutants in Europe under the Gothenburg Protocol raises the question of whether affected ecosystems have the potential to recover to their previous condition and, if so, over what timescale. Since 1998, we have monitored the response of a lowland heathland in southern England following the cessation of a long‐term nitrogen addition experiment, and subsequent management, assessing changes in vegetation growth and chemistry, soil chemistry and the soil microbial community. Persistent effects of earlier nutrient loading on Calluna growth and phenology, and on the abundance of lichens, were apparent up to 8 years after nitrogen additions ceased, indicating the potential for long‐term effects of modest nutrient loading (up to 15.4 kg N ha?1 yr?1, over 7 years) on heathland ecosystems. The size and activity of the soil microbial community was elevated in former N‐treated plots, 6–8 years after additions ceased, suggesting a prolonged effect on the rate of nutrient cycling. Although habitat management in 1998 reduced nitrogen stores in plant biomass, effects on belowground nitrogen stores were small. Although some parameters (e.g. soil pH) recover pretreatment levels relatively rapidly, others (e.g. vegetation cover and microbial activity) respond much more slowly, indicating that the ecological effects of even small increases in nitrogen deposition will persist for many years after deposition inputs are reduced. Indeed, calculations suggest that the additional soil nitrogen storage associated with 7 years of experimental nitrogen inputs could sustain the observed effects on plant growth and phenology for several decades. Carry over effects on plant phenology and sensitivity to drought suggest that the persistence of vegetation responses to nitrogen deposition should be integrated into long‐term assessments of the impact of global climate change on sensitive ecosystems. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Competitive interactions among larvae of Drosophila species using the same habitat will usually involve individuals varying in age and size. Older, larger larvae might be expected to outcompete younger, smaller larvae.
- 2 Newly hatched laryae of Drosophila aldrichi and D.buzzatii were placed on induced cactus necroses (simulating the natural habitat), either simultaneously, or with a 1 or 2 day difference in the time at which individuals of the other species were added.
- 3 Evidence for competitive differences with larval age were found. In both species, body weight was significantly higher for those larvae added first than for later addition larvae, and a longer time to complete development was required for those larvae added 2 days later. However, pre-adult viability of D.aldrichi was significantly higher for larvae started 1 or 2 days after larvae of D.buzzatii. For D.buzzatii, viability was lowest for larvae started simultaneously with D.aldrichi, but not different between those started either before or after D.aldrichi.
- 4 Considering all three traits, no clear advantage for the early addition larvae was observed.

The effects of infection with potato leafroll virus (PLRV) on the four crop processes leading to tuber fresh weight yield were examined in field plots of four cultivars (Montana, Pentland Crown, Maris Piper and King Edward) differing in tolerance to infection. Averaged across cultivars, infection decreased yield by 50%. This decrease was equally due to less light (total solar radiation) being intercepted, a lower efficiency with which intercepted light was converted into dry weight, and a smaller proportion of dry weight being partitioned to tubers. Dry matter content of the tubers was also diminished but to a lesser extent. The main difference between the cultivars in their response to infection was in the partitioning of dry weight. In Montana and Pentland Crown, harvest index was decreased by 15% in infected plants, whereas in the less tolerant cultivars, Maris Piper and King Edward, it was decreased by 25%. The decline in photosynthetic performance of Montana, a cultivar with slightly earlier maturity than the other three, was delayed in PLRV-infected plants. Effects on number of daughter tubers essentially reflected those on yield to the extent that average tuber weight did not change in Maris Piper, was one third less in King Edward, and the change was intermediate in Montana and Pentland Crown. 相似文献
