SUMMARY. 1. Microhabitat preferences of predatory stoneflies and four prey taxa were assessed by taking benthic samples along a hydraulic gradient in a Black Forest stream in West Germany. Densities of predator and prey species were estimated at twenty-one hydraulic regimes.
2. Enclosures containing the stonefly, Dinocras cephalotes , and control cages with no predators were placed in the substrate at hydraulic regimes favourable and unfavourable to predators. Cages received initial prey communities that were obtained from benthic samples taken at hydraulic regimes matching those intended for each cage.
3. Population densities of the two most numerically important prey taxa, the mayfly. Baetis rhodani , and the Chironomidae, were reduced in the presence of Dinocras , but only when enclosures were placed in the hydraulic regimes favourable to the predator. Thus, predation effects increased as the hydraulic regime became more benign to the predators.
4. Densities of two other prey species rare in the diets of Dinocras ( Hydropsyche instabilis and Gammarus fossarum ) were generally unaffected by predators regardless of the hydraulic regime.
5. These data provide support for the hypothesis that perception of the abiotic regime as harsh or benign to predators is a good predictor of predator impact on densities of preferred prey species. In harsher abiotic regimes, impact will be low, while impact will be high in benign abiotic regimes. 相似文献

A detailed study, throughout life, of the coliform and Escherichia coli gut flora of two pigs, is presented. One pig was given oral tetracycline for 3 d on two separate occasions; the other pig was not treated and housed separately. The fluctuations in numbers of coliforms, O-serotypes of E. coli , the occurrence and persistence of antibiotic resistance, and their interrelations, are analysed for both animals. Oral tetracycline profoundly affected the proportion of antibiotic sensitive and resistant E. coli , and, by selecting for R-factor bearing O-serotypes, limited the number of O-serotypes isolated from individual faceal specimens. Specific O-serotypes exhibited marked differences in their ability to persist in the gut of the control pig. The R-factor bearing O-serotypes, selected by tetracycline treatment, also showed differences in ability to persist after treatment indicating that properties other than the possession of R-factors, decide colonizing ability. A previously undescribed virus, for which the name rubus Chinese seed-borne virus (RCSV) is proposed, was isolated from a single, symptomless plant of an unidentified Rubus species grown from seed collected in the wild in the People's Republic of China, Experimentally RCSV infected 23 out of 39 spp. in six out of eight families. The virus was seed-transmitted in Chenopodium quinoa (100%) and Nicotiana bigelowii (27%). RCSV was not transmitted by the nematodes Xiphinema diversicaudatum or X. index. The particles of RCSV were isometric, c. 30 nm in diameter with some penetrated by negative stains. In thin sections particles were found in double walled tubular structures with an outer membrane enclosing one or more tubules. In crude extracts some particles were found within single-walled tubules. Two virus-associated bands were seen in sucrose density gradients of purified preparations. The upper band was not infective and consisted of penetrated particles apparently devoid of nucleic acid. The lower, infective band was resolved into two components, of density 1.452 and 1.461 g/ml, in caesium chloride isopycnic gradients. There were two polypeptides (mol. wts c. 47 000 and 25 200 daltons) and two nucleic acid species (one of mol. wt c. 1.4 × 106 daltons; the second was poorly defined by the methods used but was of higher molecular weight). RCSV was distantly related serologically (6–7 SDI) to the type isolate of strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRV) and also reacted with antisera to serologicaly distinct grape and olive isolates of SLRV. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) procedures produce maps of stimulus points, the dimensions of which may be sensory and/or physicochemical attributes. Our objective was to test the efficiencies of a cyclic design and a MDS method in the study of saltiness perception. Two levels of NaCl (0.1% and 0.2%, w/v) were added to two nonionic and two ionic gum solutions prepared to two concentrations. Subjects scaled dissimilarities between pairs of solutions and rated each sample for flavor attributes. Solution pairs were selected using cyclic designs. Repeated measures ANOVA determined that added NaCl was the only significant factor affecting saltiness perception. In contrast, from KYST-2A MDS maps, we concluded that saltiness perception was influenced by gum property, gum concentration, presence of calcium and potassium, and related to binding of the sodium ion (Na+ ) as determined by 23 Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Investigating species incidence over habitat fragments of different areas—a look at error estimation

The use of incidence functions and their error structure is explored as a means of interpreting patterns present in fragmented systems. Incidence functions describe the probability of a species' presence on a fragment. The only information required for an incidence function is presence/absence data for a number of fragments of known size. Methods are developed for establishing prediction bounds on the incidence function. The example developed uses data from mammals on isolated mountaintops. Distributions of number of species expected on a fragment predicted the actual number of species well, but prediction of identities of species on small fragments was poor. Although the number of species expected on an assembly of small fragments compared to a single large fragment of the same total area was nearly always equal, the identity of species differed. Species with large area requirements were never found on any number of small fragments; species which occurred with a medium probability over most fragments had a higher probability of being present in an assembly of small fragments than on a single large fragment. 相似文献

Abstract: To estimate wolf (Canis lupus) kill rates from fine-scale movement patterns, we followed adult wolves in 3 territories of the Scandinavian wolf population using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) during the winters of 2001–2003. The resulting 6 datasets of 62–84 study days gave a total of 8,747 hourly GPS positions. We visited clusters of positions in the field on average 8.8 days after positioning and found moose (Alces alces) killed by wolves during the study period on 74 (8%) of the 953 clusters. The number of positions and visits to a cluster, their interaction, and the proportion of afternoon positions were significant fixed effects in mixed logistic-regression models predicting the probability of a cluster containing a wolf-killed moose. The models, however, displayed a poor goodness-of-fit and were not a suitable tool for estimating kill rates from positioning data alone. They might be used to reduce fieldwork by excluding unlikely clusters, although the reduction was not substantial. We discuss proximate factors (i.e., human disturbance and access to prey) as well as ultimate factors (i.e., social organization, intra-guild dominance, and litter size) as potential causes of the observed high temporal and spatial variation in prey-handling.
