Kawasaki disease,or mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome: report of seven cases in North America.

The clinical and laboratory findings in seven children with Kawasaki disease are reviewed. Four of the patients had the more complicated course that has characterized the cases diagnosed in North America. This suggests that the benign forms are often mistaken for other febrile illnesses. The patients were two girls and five boys ranging in age from 4 months to 7 years; six were Caucasian and one was a North American Indian. Fever, redness of the oral mucosa, an erythematous or scarlatiniform rash and cervical adenopathy were seen in all; six patients had the characteristic fingertip desquamation and nonexudative conjunctivitis. Cardiac involvement occurred in four patients, two of whom had coronary artery aneurysm or thrombosis. Arthritis or arthralgia was seen in six patients, and aseptic meningitis occurred in four. Of the three patients with jaundice two underwent laparotomy and excision of a hydropic gallbladder; one of them died from Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.     

Shoulder defect correction with the island latissimus dorsi flap

Reconstruction of normal shoulder contour is possible utilizing a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap at the end of a long neurovascular pedicle. The thoracodorsal vessels and their lateral divisions form the basis of the pedicle. The nerve in the pedicle is left intact if maintenance of muscle bulk is desired and sectioned if atrophy is preferred. The amount of muscle taken in conjunction with the skin island is determined by the nature of the defect to be corrected. The twin goals of a single-stage reconstruction and a satisfactory aesthetic result are achieved with this method.     

Germination of the chlamydospores of Candida albicans

Using a slide culture technique, it was determined unequivocally that the chlamydospore of Candida albicans does germinate. The germination was by way of a multiple-budding process which was associated mostly with young spores following their transfer to a fresh environment. It is concluded the chlamydospore of C. albicans is a reproductive cell with a transient viability.     

Luteal phase defects: a possible relationship between short hyperthermic phase and sporadic sexual behavior in women

Sporadic (less than regular weekly) coital activity is associated with a particular type of infertility—the short hyperthermic (luteal) phase. This preliminary report is the first suggestion that a reduced frequency of human sexual activity might, itself, be associated with subfertile reproductive function.     

Role of virus inhibitory factor or interferon in the antitumoral effect of whole-body hyperthermia

The interferon inducing effect of hyperthermia was studied in normal and tumor-bearing mice. Circulating interferon was temporarily detected one day after subcutaneous transplantation of 1.6 X 10(6) Ehrlich's ascites tumor cells. Hyperthermia of 43.5 degrees C for 5 min did not induce the interferon formation in mice with or without subcutaneous tumor of the cells. These findings showed that the induction of interferon formation was not main cause of the hyperthermia-induced tumor inhibition.     

Isolation and characterisation of nuv11, a mutation affecting meiotic and mitotic recombination in Aspergillus nidulans

A mutant of Aspergillus nidulans, designated nuv11, has been isolated as hypersensitive to the monofunctional alkylating agent MNNG and the quasi-UV-mimetic mutagen 4-NQO. The mutation was recessive, resulting from mutation of a single gene which mapped to chromosome IV, and was non-allelic to the previously characterised repair-deficient mutations uvsB and uvsH which are also located on this linkage group. The nuv11 mutation results in slow growth, deficient intragenic and intergenic meiotic recombination, increased spontaneous chromosome instability, and increased intragenic and intergenic mitotic recombination in homozygous diploids. By screening a wild-type gene bank of A nidulans, a clone (pNUV11A40) has been isolated which complements the nuv11 mutation, restoring wild-type responses to both MNNG and 4-NQO.     

Unidirectional hybridization of kaluga <Emphasis Type="Italic">Acipenser dauricus</Emphasis> Georgi, 1775 and Amur sturgeon <Emphasis Type="Italic">Acipenser schrenckii</Emphasis> Brandt, 1869, inferred from the mitochondrial DNA genotyping of their natural hybrids

In 2009 through 2011, among 730 individuals of kaluga and Amur sturgeon collected in the lower reaches of the Amur River and the Amursky Liman, 17 morphologically intermediate individuals (hybrids) with the body length of 56 to 202 cm (median, 81 cm) were identified, including 11 individuals (4.6%) found in 2009, three individuals (1.6%) found in 2010, and three individuals (1.1%), in 2011. In 16 hybrids, 819 bp of the mtDNA control regions were sequences and 11 haplotypes were identified. Since all these haplotypes were from the mtDNA lineages of kaluga, it was concluded that hybridization occurred in one direction, kaluga (♀) × Amur sturgeon (♂). This asymmetry could be caused by the large size differences between these species. Since the earlier examined morphologically typical Amur sturgeons showed the absence of alien haplotypes (Shedko et al., 2015), the absence of the mtDNA introgression is claimed. This can be caused by low viability or sterility of the backcross females (kaluga (♀) × Amur sturgeon (♂)) × Amur sturgeon (♂). The samples of hybrids and typical kaluga individuals demonstrated no differences in the frequency spectra of the mtDNA haplotypes. However, haplotype and nucleotide diversity in the first sample was somewhat higher than in the second one (0.950 versus 0.927 and 0.0054 versus 0.0044, respectively). The data obtained will be useful for population monitoring of kaluga and Amur sturgeon, Amur River endemics, which are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.     

Characterization of β-amylase and its deficiency in various rice cultivars

 β-Amylase deficiency in various cultivars of rice was examined at the molecular level. Using an antibody against β-amylase purified from germinating seeds of rice, we were able to demonstrate the expression and organization of the β-amylase gene in normal and deficient cultivars. Although β-amylase is a starch-hydrolyzing enzyme, as is α-amylase, the β-amylase protein/gene is expressed differently from the α-amylase protein/gene; i.e. (1) β-amylase is synthesized only in aleurone cells, (2) the enzyme production in the embryo-less half-seeds is not under hormonal control. We identified some cultivars of rice that are deficient for β-amylase activity. We present new evidence that synthesis is blocked at the level of mRNA synthesis in the deficient cultivars. The usefulness of β-amylase as a crop trait is also discussed. Received: 8 May 1998 / Accepted: 5 June 1998
