T-2 toxin degradation by micromycetes

The biodegradation of T-2 toxin was studied by strains of micromycetes which were isolated from the environment. The 26 tested strains were divided into three groups. Group contains strains which degraded T-2 toxin very fast. This toxin could not be chromatographically determined in the medium even after 48 hours of incubation and the antifungal activity of residua against Kluyveromyces fragilis CCY-51-1-2 was low or zero. There were strains of Alternaria sp., Ulocladium sp., Aspergillus candidus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Rhodotorula sp., Aspergillus flavus and Cladosporium macrocarpum. Group II contains with a low activity and in group III the results were variable and non stable.     

Keratinophilic fungi from Orissa, India, II: Isolations from feathers of wild birds and domestic fowls

Feather samples from 117 birds, representing 11 species, were examined for keratinophilic fungi. Of these, 63 (53.8%) were found to be positive. Nine species of fungi classified in 6 genera were isolated: Aphanoascus terreus (1.7%), Chrysosporium indicum (26.4%), Chrys. tropicum (11.1%) the Chrysosporium state of Aphanoascus spp. (2.5%), the Chrysosporium state of Arthroderma tuberculatum (3.4%), Ctenomyces serratus (0.8%), Gymnoascoideus petalosporus (7.6%), Malbranchea spp. (6.8%), Rollandina hyalinospora (6.8%). Passer domesticus (the house sparrow) harboured the largest varieties of keratinophilic fungi: the Chrysosporium state of Arthroderma tuberculatum was found to be associated with it selectively. The associations of these keratinophilic fungi with birds were non-clinical in nature.     

Altered fatty acid composition in regulatory mutants of Streptomyces cinnamonensis

Abstract cDNA-RNA liquid hybridization analysis was used to compare the RNA sequence homology between two members of the Nudaurelia β virus family, Trichoplusia ni virus ( T.ni V) and Dasychira pudibunda virus ( D.p V). Heterologous hybridization experiments demonstrated that these viruses shared little sequence homology. Using oligo(dT) chromatography and oligo(dT)_12–18 as a primer for cDNA synthesis it was shown that neither T.ni V nor D.p V RNA genomes possess a poly(A) tract at the 3' end.     

An Na+-stimulated Mg2+-transport system in human red blood cells

The initial rate of net Mg2+ efflux was measured in human red blood cells by atomic absorption. In fresh erythrocytes incubated in Na+,K+-Ringer's medium this rate was 7.3 +/- 2.8 mumol/l cells per h (mean +/- S.D. of 14 subjects) with an energy of activation of 13 200 cal/mol. Cells with total Mg2+ contents ([ Mg]i) ranging from 1.8 to 24 mmol/l cells were prepared by using a modified p-chloromercuribenzenesulphonate method. Mg2+ efflux was strongly stimulated by increases in [Mg]i and in external Na+ concentrations ([ Na]o). A kinetic analysis of Mg2+ efflux as a function of [Mg]i and [Na]o revealed the existence of two components: an Na+-stimulated Mg2+ efflux, which exhibited a Michaelian-like dependence of free internal Mg2+ content (apparent dissociation constant = 2.6 +/- 1.4 mmol/l cells; mean +/- S.D. of six subjects) and on external Na+ concentration (apparent dissociation constant = 20.5 +/- 1.9 mM; mean +/- S.D. of four subjects) and a variable maximal rate ranging from 35 to 370 mumol/l cells per h, and an Na+-independent Mg2+ efflux, which showed a linear dependence on internal Mg2+ content with a rate constant of (6.6 +/- 0.7) X 10(-3) h-1. Fluxes catalyzed by the Na+-stimulated Mg2+ carrier were partially dependent on the ATP content of the cells and completely inhibited by quinidine (IC50 = 50 microM) and by Mn2+ (IC50 = 0.5-1.0 mM).     

Avian thrombocyte thrombospondin

A high molecular weight glycoprotein (450,000) was obtained from thrombin-treated duck thrombocytes by barium citrate adsorption technique followed by heparin-agarose affinity chromatography. Amino acid composition (high number of acidic amino acids and cystine) as well as carbohydrate contents (1.3 per cent hexosamine, 0.9 per cent sialic acid and 1.5 per cent hexose) showed similarity to mammalian platelet thrombospondin.
