The colonization patterns of oceanic islands are often interpreted through transmarine dispersal. However, in islands with intense human activities and unclear geological history, this inference may be inappropriate. Cyprus is such an island, whose geotectonic evolution has not been clarified yet to the desired level for biogeographical reconstructions, leaving the questions of ‘how the Cypriote biota arrived’ and ‘does the dispersal have the formative role in patterns of its diversification’ unanswered. Here, we address these issues through a reconstruction of the evolutionary history of six herptiles (Ablepharus budaki, Ophisops elegans, Acanthodactylus schreiberi, Telescopus fallax, Pelophylax cf. bedriagae, and Hyla savignyi) by means of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b and 16S rRNA), applying a Bayesian phylogenetic, biogeographical, and chronophylogenetic analyses. The phylogeographical analyses show that the colonization history of those species in Cyprus started in the late Miocene and extended into the Pliocene and Pleistocene, with geodispersal, transmarine dispersal, and human‐mediated dispersal having their share in shaping the diversification of Cypriote herptiles. The revealed patterns could be divided into three biogeographical categories: old colonizers that arrived in Cyprus during the late Miocene or early Pliocene either by a land bridge (geodispersal) which connected Cyprus with the mainland or by transmarine dispersal, younger colonizers that reached the island through transmarine dispersal from the Middle East, and new settlers that arrived through human‐induced (voluntary or not) introductions. Among the major constituents of Leea rubra (Family Vitaceae) leaves, phenolic and flavonoind compounds are most important for therapeutic purposes and the plant parts have been used in traditional medicine to treat several diseases for long. Thus, in order to scientifically confirm the traditional uses of the L. rubra leaves, the present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of the isolated flavones against AAPH induced oxidative damage to pUC19 DNA by gel electrophoresis and antineoplastic activity was evaluated on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice by evaluating percentage inhibition of cell growth, morphological changes of EAC cells and hematological parameters of the mice. The isolation was carried out by column chromatography and structure was revealed by 1H-NMR and 13C NMR. The result shows that, the isolated compound was identified as myricetin 4'-methoxy-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside based on previously reported data. The isolated flavone effectively inhibited AAPH-induced oxidative damage to DNA; because it could inhibit the formation of circular and linear forms of the DNA. In anti-proliferative assay, 76% growth inhibition of EAC cells was observed as compare to the control mice (p<0.05) at a dose 100 mg/kg body weight. Thus the isolated flavone showed great importance as a possible therapeutic agent in preventing oxidative damage to DNA and the chronic diseases caused by such DNA damage, and can also become important in cancer chemotherapy. 相似文献

Circadian rhythms are the endogenous oscillations, occurring with a periodicity of approximately twenty-four hours, in the biochemical and behavioral functions of organisms. In mammals, the phase and period of the rhythm are synchronized to the daily light-dark cycle by light input through the eye. Certain retinal degenerative diseases affecting the photoreceptor cells, both rods and cones, in the outer retina reveal that classical opsins (i.e., rhodopsin and color opsins located in these cells) are essential for vision, but are not required for circadian photoreception. The mammalian cryptochromes and melanopsin (and possibly other opsin family pigments) have been proposed as circadian photoreceptor pigments that exist in the inner retina. Genetic analysis indicates that the cryptochromes, which contain flavin and folate as the light-absorbing cofactors, are the primary circadian photoreceptors. The classical photoreceptors in the outer retina, and melanopsin or other minor opsins in the inner retina, may perform redundant functions in circadian rhythmicity. 相似文献

was officially appointed by IAEA to be the IAEA/NUS Regional Training Centre (RTC) for RCA Member States for training of tissue
bank operators on September 18, 1996. In the first five years since its establishment the National University Hospital Tissue
Bank concentrated its work on the sterile procurement and production of deep frozen femoral heads and were used in patients
for bone reconstruction. The cost of producing these tissues were about SGD$ 250 per femoral head although cost fees were
initially charged at SGD$ 50 per femoral head. The most important activity carried out by Singapore within the IAEA was training.
Between November 1997 and April 2007, a total of nine courses were conducted by RTC with a total of 180 tissue bank operators
registered, 133 from Asia and the Pacific region (13 countries, including 2 from Iran), 14 from Africa (Zambia, Libya, Egypt,
Algeria, and South Africa), 6 from Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Peru, and Uruguay), 9 from Europe (Greece, Slovakia,
Poland, and Ukraine), and 2 from Australia. The last batch (ninth batch) involved 20 students registered in April 2007 and

The aim of this study was to compare the physiological responses and energy cost between two ascending patterns, the single-step (SS) and the double-step (DS), in climbing a public staircase. In the SS pattern, a person climbs one step at a time whilst in the double-step (DS) pattern, the individual traverses two steps in a single stride. Advocates of each stepping pattern claimed that their type of ascent is physically more taxing and expends more calories. Thirty subjects (10 males and 20 females) climbed a typical 11-storey flat (each step height of 0.15 m, a total of 180 steps and a vertical displacement of 27.0 m). The subjects climbed using either the SS pattern at a tempo of 100 steps x min(-1) or the DS pattern at 50 steps x min(-1). The prescribed stepping frequencies ensured that an equal amount of total work was performed between the SS and DS patterns. The climbing patterns were performed in random order. Physiological measures during the last 30 s of the climbs were used in the comparative analysis. The results showed that ventilation, oxygen uptake and heart rate values were significantly higher (all p < 0.01) in the SS as compared to the DS pattern. However, the caloric expenditure during the SS pattern was calculated to be only marginally higher than the DS pattern. In conclusion, ascending with the SS pattern led to significantly higher physiological responses compared to the DS pattern. Like other countries, Malaysia faces the challenge of how to encourage scientific progress and innovation in an ethical manner while at the same time ensuring a safe and accessible market for regenerative therapies. The paleobiogeography of hominoids exhibits a puzzling pattern of migrations between and within Africa and Eurasia. A precise dating of hominoid-bearing localities is therefore essential to reveal the timing, direction and possible causes of dispersals. Here, we present a bio-magnetostratigraphic analysis of the section of Engelswies (Southern Germany, Upper Freshwater Molasse, North Alpine Foreland Basin) where the oldest Eurasian hominoid was found. Our paleomagnetic results reveal a very short normal and a reverse magnetic polarity for the entire section. The polarity record is correlated to the Astronomical Tuned Neogene Time Scale using an integrated stratigraphic approach. This approach follows the chronostratigraphic framework for the Upper Freshwater Molasse, which combines magnetostratigraphy with biostratigraphic, lithostratigraphic and 40Ar/39Ar dating results. According to this outcome, the reverse polarity of the Engelswies section most likely correlates to magnetochron C5Cr. The origin of the short normal polarity remains enigmatic. The magnetostratigraphic calibration and the evolutionary level of the Engelswies small mammal fauna suggest an age of 17.1-17.0 Ma (Early Karpatian, Early Miocene) for the oldest Eurasian hominoid, and roughly confirm the estimates of Heizmann and Begun (2001). The estimated age suggests that the first hominoids in Eurasia are contemporaneous with Afro-Arabian afropithecins, and dispersal may have been facilitated by intra-Burdigalian (∼18-17 Ma) sea-level low stands and the beginning of the Miocene Climate Optimum. The paleoclimatic and environmental reconstruction of the Engelswies locality indicates a lakeshore environment near dense subtropical rain forest vegetation, where paratropical temperatures (mean annual temperature around 20 °C) and humid conditions (mean annual precipitation > 1.100 mm) prevailed. 相似文献

Abstract Prays oleae Bern, (OM) and Palpita unionalis Hüb., (JM) are two of the most important pests in olive groves in Egypt. A 3‐year monitoring study using sex pheromone traps in semi‐arid and arid olive groves was performed. In the semi‐arid grove, flight pattern of the OM was the same as in other Mediterranean countries, but in dates concordating plant phenology. The moth completes three generations annually: the first flight is in March to April, the second is in May to June and the third occurs in August to October. In the arid olive grove, an interesting flight pattern was observed. First flight was always very close or overlapped with the second one with no male catches during August to October. However, eggs were present most of the season, indicating unusually high female presence and oviposition activity of the OM during the absence of males in the traps. Generally, moth densities were significantly lower in low fruiting years than in higher ones and were also lower in the arid olive grove than in the semi‐arid one. In contrast, JM males were present all season, exhibiting six to seven and three to four overlapping flight peaks in arid and semi‐arid olive groves, respectively. Moth densities were significantly higher in the arid olive grove than those in the semi‐arid one. This study shows that trapping location and fruit bearing year are characteristics that strongly affect the grove‐specific information needed to estimate correctly adult emergence and thus the timing of control measures. 相似文献

Only a small fraction of individuals exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis develop clinical tuberculosis (TB). Over the past century, epidemiological studies have shown that human genetic factors contribute significantly to this interindividual variability, and molecular progress has been made over the past decade for at least two of the three key TB-related phenotypes: (i) a major locus controlling resistance to infection with M. tuberculosis has been identified, and (ii) proof of principle that severe TB of childhood can result from single-gene inborn errors of interferon-γ immunity has been provided; genetic association studies with pulmonary TB in adulthood have met with more limited success. Future genetic studies of these three phenotypes could consider subgroups of subjects defined on the basis of individual (e.g. age at TB onset) or environmental (e.g. pathogen strain) factors. Progress may also be facilitated by further methodological advances in human genetics. Identification of the human genetic variants controlling the various stages and forms of TB is critical for understanding TB pathogenesis. These findings should have major implications for TB control, in the definition of improved prevention strategies, the optimization of vaccines and clinical trials and the development of novel treatments aiming to restore deficient immune responses. 相似文献
