House flies, Musca domestica L., are important pests of dairy operations worldwide, with the ability to adapt wide range of environmental conditions. There are a number of insecticides used for their management, but development of resistance is a serious problem. Insecticide mixtures could enhance the toxicity of insecticides in resistant insect pests, thus resulting as a potential resistance management tool. The toxicity of bifenthrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos, profenofos, emamectin benzoate and fipronil were assessed separately, and in mixtures against house flies. A field-collected population was significantly resistant to all the insecticides under investigation when compared with a laboratory susceptible strain. Most of the insecticide mixtures like one pyrethroid with other compounds evaluated under two conditions (1∶1-“A” and LC50: LC50-“B”) significantly increased the toxicity of pyrethroids in the field population. Under both conditions, the combination indices of pyrethroids with other compounds, in most of the cases, were significantly below 1, suggesting synergism. The enzyme inhibitors, PBO and DEF, when used in combination with insecticides against the resistant population, toxicities of bifenthrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and emamectin were significantly increased, suggesting esterase and monooxygenase based resistance mechanism. The toxicities of bifenthrin, cypermethrin and deltamethrin in the resistant population of house flies could be enhanced by the combination with chlorpyrifos, profenofos, emamectin and fipronil. This study investigates the relationship between the high density lipoprotein (HDL) receptor (scavenger receptors, SR-BI and SR-BII), selective lipoprotein-cholesteryl ester uptake, and testosterone production in Leydig cells of control, hypocholesterolemic and gonadotrophic hormone (hCG) treated rats. Leydig cells from mature control rats show poor efficiency in incorporation of labeled HDL-cholesteryl esters into testosterone, poor selective uptake of lipoprotein lipids overall, and a dramatic reduction of circulating levels of lipoproteins has no apparent effect on testosterone production or expression of intracellular enzymes synthesizing cholesterol. Leydig cells from control rats show minimal levels of SR-BI and SR-BII. However, similarly aged rats treated with hCG for several days undergo changes consistent with hormone-desensitization. Despite the resulting low levels of testosterone production, SR-BI levels are dramatically increased, Leydig cells now efficiently internalize HDL-supplied cholesteryl esters by the selective cholesterol uptake process, and various other cholesterol-sensitive genes of the cells are up-regulated. Only SR-BII expression remains negligible and unchanged throughout this period. It is of interest that Leydig cell SR-BI of hCG-treated rats is localized in surface microvilli, but is present also in an elaborate and complex channel system within the cytoplasm of the cells. In summary, Leydig cells differ from other rat steroidogenic cells in not depending on exogenous lipoprotein-cholesterol during periods of normal steroid hormone production. However, trophic hormone desensitization is accompanied by increased Leydig cell SR-BI expression and increased selective HDL-cholesteryl ester uptake, presumably in preparation for renewed testosterone production. 相似文献

The recurrent neurotrophic buttock ulcer in the meningomyelocele paraplegic: a sensate flap solution
A large percentage of meningomyelocele paraplegic patients have a distal zone of sensation-bearing skin on their thighs. This sensate skin can be used as a fasciocutaneous flap to resurface a recidivistic ulcer after excision. In this study, because the transposition distance was significant, the flap length-width ratio was greater than normal and, therefore, required a 3-week elevation delay. This also permitted appraisal of the sensate flap after the first stage. The wound-healing was excellent after both stages. This reconstructive procedure was completed in four patients, with an average follow-up period of 13 years. These patients remain chronic sitters in administrative jobs and have been pressure sore-free after flap repair. 相似文献

In Dictyostelium discoideum, the initial differentiation of cells is regulated by the phase of the cell cycle at starvation. Cells in S and early G2 (or with a low DNA content) have relatively high levels of cellular Ca2+ and display a prestalk tendency after starvation, whereas cells in mid to late G2 (or with a high DNA content) have relatively low levels of Ca2+ and display a prespore tendency. We found that there is a correlation between cytosolic Ca2+ and cell cycle phase, with high Ca2+ levels being restricted to cells in the S and early G2 phases. As expected on the basis of this correlation, cell cycle inhibitors influence the proportions of amoebae containing high or low Ca2+. However, it has been reported that in the rtoA mutant, which upon differentiation gives rise to many more stalk cells than spores (compared to the wild type), initial cell-type choice is independent of cell cycle phase at starvation. In contrast to the wild type, a disproportionately large fraction of rtoA amoebae fall into the high Ca2+ class, possibly due to an altered ability of this mutant to transport Ca2+. 相似文献

Selected bacterial species were monitored at two pH values, over 24 h of batch culture incubation. The concentration of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and lactate in the fermented material was also determined. The addition of L. agilis JCM 1048 and L. salivarius ssp . salicinius JCM 1230 into vessel 2 (Cc + P) increased the total anaerobes, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria after 24 h incubation. Moreover, lactobacilli supplementation decreased the total aerobes and streptococci, but it did not have any effects on coliforms. The supplementation of lactobacilli in vessel 2 (Cc + P) was found to significantly increase the production of lactate, propionate and butyrate. Furthermore, pH did not alter the formation of butyrate, whereas the production of acetate and propionate was significantly decreased at pH = 5·8.
Conclusions: L. agilis JCM 1048 and L. salivarius ssp . salicinius JCM 1230, as probiotic bacteria, have the ability to re-establish proper microbial balance by the formation of lactate as well as propionate, and stimulate butyrate-producing bacteria to produce butyrate in the chicken cecum.

Monoculture farming is pervasive in industrial oil palm agriculture, including those RSPO plantations certified as sustainably managed. This farming practice does not promote the maintenance of farmland biodiversity. However, little scientific attention has been given to polyculture farming in oil palm production landscapes. Polyculture farming is likely to increase the floristic diversity and stand structural complexity that underpins biodiversity. Mist nets were used to sample birds at 120 smallholdings in Peninsular Malaysia. At each site, 12 vegetation structure characteristics were measured. We compared bird species richness, abundance, and composition between monoculture and polyculture smallholdings and used predictive models to examine the effects of habitat quality on avian biodiversity. Bird species richness was significantly greater in polyculture than that of monoculture smallholdings. The number of fallen and standing, dead oil palms were also important positive predictors of species richness. Bird abundance was also strongly increased by standing and dead oil palms and decreased with oil palm stand height. Our results indicate that polyculture farming can improve bird species richness in oil palm production landscapes. In addition, key habitat variables that are closely associated with farming practices, such as the removal of dead trees, should and can be managed by oil palm growers in order to promote biodiversity. To increase the sustainability of oil palm agriculture, it is imperative that stakeholders modify the way oil palms are currently planted and managed. Our findings can guide policy makers and certification bodies to promote oil palm production landscapes that will function more sustainably and increase existing biodiversity of oil palm landscapes. 相似文献
